I booked a "Therapeutic Table Massage" with Shannon Trudeau and had a very traumatic experience. When I arrived I explained to her I like firm pressure and was having issues with my shoulders and neck and upper back being very tight and I would like to primarily focus on those areas. The first 30 minutes of my massage were her guiding some sort of yoga nidra exercise with no actual massaging. I had to ask her when the massage would actually start. She seemed to have a huge ego about the request and continued her guided exercise. Once she did start "massaging" me, it was just her placing her hands on my body very lightly and doing static holds on trigger points. I explained to her I would Like more muscle stimulation in the form of a faster deeper massage but she didn't listen to my requests and kept doing the things she was doing that I did not ask for. She didn't pay attention tho the specific areas that I came in to address and spent most of the time on my arms and legs. She talked the majority of the massage and kept instructing me to take deep breaths. I do not come in to this for a therapy session which is what it felt like. The table was cold and so was the room. I had to ask her to turn the heat on the table mid session because I was freezing and her hands were freezing. She did not seem to have any knowledge of anatomy, massage, or draping. After the session was over she sat me down and wanted to go over her "findings" and it felt really uncomfortable having someone tell me all the areas in my body she noticed I was tight but not actually using the time I paid for to resolve any of those issues. I did not book a trigger point massage, a reiki session, or a therapy session. I mentioned to her multiple times I was not wanting the type of "massage" she gave me and she said that "energetically we may not be a good fit" - in my option this is such a rude thing to say to someone who was very clear about the massage I wanted to receive and requested it multiple times only to be completely ignored - probably because this person is not educated enough or capable of doing actual massage. This practitioner is borderline harmful and should not be practicing any healing modality. I felt disgusting after leaving her session. I felt completely ignored and judged. I debated weather or not I should leave this review but after experiencing this I wanted other people to know the potential harms of booking with this practitioner. Please remove her from "therapeutic table massage" because she didn't actually massage me and this is really misleading for customers. read more

For my first visit, I booked an hour of therapeutic massage with Jenn to address neck and shoulder tension. She did a thorough assessment of posture/mechanics before starting at my toes - explaining how that was going to help towards the end goal. Then she worked slowly and methodically, attentive to my response to pressure, up to my shoulder and neck. I left feeling much more "loose" and relaxed, and with some tips to make the benefits last longer. I'm booking another as soon as my schedule allows. I've been here twice - once for acupuncture and once for pre-natal massage. Today's review is really focused on the fantastic pre-natal massage that I received today from Nicole S. Some of you may know Namu, the Korean restaurant/cafe facing towards 15-501 - RB is located towards the backside. The moment you walk in through their entrance from the gravel parking lot, you can feel the sense of zen-ness permeating from the beautiful environment -- even the 15-501 traffic zooming by in the background turns to white noise and you find yourself in this magical place that provides all kinds of holistic services besides just massage and acupuncture. Now that I'm preggers, I'm really interested in the varied services and education they provide for moms-to-be and first-time-moms. I have really gone through my fair share of body-work in all kinds of forms and today as I melted into Nicole's hands (as much as you can melt while being super tight b/c of a growing belly), I reminded myself that I needed to practice more self-care now that I have another human being to consider. Today, I realized how hard my body has been working not only to sustain my own life, but also in creating a new one.... annnnnd so today's 75 minutes massage with Nicole was a big reminder for me to nourish it with some more self-love... Restoring Balance seems like a nice place with a relaxing ambience. I was disappointed because I scheduled a massage and received a confirmation email regarding my confirmed appointment and massage therapist. However, after driving from Durham in rush hour traffic, I was informed that there had been a "scheduling conflict", and that I would not be able to get a massage. I was given the option of driving to Hillsborough or waiting 2 hours, neither of which I had the time to do on a Friday evening. Very unfortunate- I really was looking forward to the massage. It wouldve been nice if they had contacted me prior to me driving out there to let me know about the scheduling issue. read more

I came here for a 60-minute prenatal massage during my lunch break after having some lower back pain, ostensibly from supporting my growing belly. I had heard a lot of good things about prenatal massage, but I was surprised to find that there are not a ton of providers in the Triangle area. I made my appointment the week before online, which was very easy and convenient. I came for a massage but generally this is more of a holistic woman based healing center. They offer birthing classes, placenta encapsulation (if you're into that kind of thing), herbal steams, and a bunch of other spiritual zen things. I came in and waited in the first waiting area. There were clear instructions to fill out the standard paperwork and that someone would be with me shortly. A few minutes after I arrived my masseuse, Latasha, popped her head out and invited me back. The studio had a second waiting room area with 3-4 rooms off of it. I was lead back to my room and Latasha explained to me how prenatal massage works (you lay on your side instead of back, how to turn, etc). I thought it was a great massage! Very relaxing and it was a full body massage with focus on the back and feet, which was perfect. The room was dimly lit, smelled good, and had relaxation music playing. Every time I get a massage I wonder why my home bedroom isn't more like these places? Anyways, I had a good experience with Latasha and I would come back for another prenatal massage from her. Especially after I start to whale-out, which I'm sure is coming very soon. The massage studio is in a older office building behind the Sheraton Chapel Hill on 15-501 off Europa Drive, technically in Chapel Hill but still pretty close to the Durham line. read more

I have been for three 60 minutes massages here at Restoring Balance and they were all amazing! I love the feeling of calmness that I get just from walking in the door. They are constantly adding new services, to nourish and support women. I plan to keep coming back here for massages and will also try the community acupuncture, the Thai massage, and the V-Steam sometime. They also offer Lactation Consulting, birthing from within classes, infant massage and placenta encapsulation, (none of which I currently need). I also know that the place is available for a ladies night out, where a bunch of friends get together to have an evening out with laughs and pampering. I have been getting massage from Nicole Splenda and Wanda Sundermann for years. They are THE BEST in the Triangle! Nicole has the strongest (and most tireless) hands that I've ever encountered, and Wanda is talented with both adult and infant massage and cranio-sacral therapies. I have had both prenatal and postnatal massage from both women, and have always found them to be accomodating for my growing belly (and milk-making boobs), with frequent check-ins about my level of comfort. Wanda worked some of her cranio-sacral magic on my twin babies, which helped them with their colicky discomfort and improved their latch with breastfeeding. I booked one with Nicole and was really happy with the experience. Nicole is a registered nurse so she knew all the medications I was taking and was familiar with my pregnancy complications (gestational diabetes and hypertension).
