Dr. Cotsen has been a lifesaver for me. I've tried multiple psychiatrists and Dr. Cotsen has been by far one of the best. I've had feelings of sudden desperation, and Dr. Cotsen ALWAYS responds in a timely manner. There's a huge piece of mind that brings comfort that help is an email away. I suffer from anxiety and his calm demeanor helps slow things down for me. Suddenly that feeling of impending doom and that "I gotta gotta" mentality becomes a faint voice. He provides deep and meaningful thoughts into his feedback and tools (such as his blogpost) to help in your mental wellbeing. He is patient and helped me walk through several exercises. His perspective and knowledge is insightful, practical, and well intended. It helps me change my perspective on how I view life situations. I've had some bad days but have have become more optimistic about the future and reaching my full potential. I feel Dr. Cotsen really respects his profession and his clients. It's funny to write a review of your psychiatrist, but Adam (it's okay for you to call him by his first name) has been so remarkably helpful, I want other people to know so they can have the benefit of this excellent doctor. I've been seeing him for about a year, and am much happier and more confident than I was 12 months ago. I decided to go to therapy because I felt unsettled. I identified a couple of patterns that I wanted to change, but I didn't know if I could. Spoiler alert: I could. And with Adam's help, I did. He's a really good listener who somehow makes it easy to talk about awkward, even embarrassing stuff. But he does more than create a Judgment-Free Zone. He offers insight and, when necessary, specific, helpful suggestions and strategies for how to approach individual problems. In fact, he's such a skilled clinician, he quickly recognized some patterns I hadn't noticed - and he helped me ditch them in favor of much healthier, more productive ones. Early on, I worried that therapy would be a grim process of dredging up painful issues and experiences. While we've occasionally examined old traumas, it hasn't been grim at all, and I'm pretty sure we've both laughed during every appointment. He's insightful and ethical and earnest and thoughtful and smart and respectful and professional and engaging and warm - all the qualities you want in a therapist. I get the sense that he genuinely cares about his patients, and that I'm not merely his 3 p.m. appointment. A few other things, one more important than the other: He returns calls quickly and his office and waiting room are clean and comfortable. Individual results, as they say, may vary, but mine have been great - and some were very fast. As I said at the top, I'm a whole lot happier and more self-aware now than I was only a year ago. Some things that used to bother me a lot no longer do (or only bother me a very little). Adam helped me tremendously, and he still does. I've seen Dr Cotsen for almost 15 years and I will say he's an excellent therapist and who is also incredibly knowledgeable about medications. I've been able to discuss a range of issues with him and I appreciate his perspective and feedback. I've been seeing Dr. Adam for about a year and a half. In that time, he has become an essential part of my support structure and a profound source of insight, clarity, and comfort. He is an incredible clinician and a truly lovely, lovely human being. And one big logistical bonus: Parking has always been a breeze. The building offers valet service, but I've never had to use it since street parking is plentiful. At the age of 50, I was struck with panic attacks and horrible anxiety. My case was beyond what my GP was able to treat, and so he referred me to a psychiatrist. I had never visited one before, and being a reserved man, I was uncertain how much I would be able to embrace the process in order for it to help me. I have been going to Dr. Cotsen for about two years now and can only recommend him whole heartedly to anyone who feels it's time they addressed some of their issues with a professional. I normally don't write reviews unless a business is either exceptionally good or the counter opposite. In Dr. Cotsen's case it is the former! Two years ago I was dealing with stressors in my life that I could no longer handle by myself and so I knew it was time to make that step and become one of those people who have to go see a "shrink". Once I overcame my fear of that stigma I began very thorough research, for if I were to go then at least I needed to go to the very best I could find! After some time of searching I came upon Dr. Adam's practice and what made me chose him were his credentials, his reviews and last not least the overall impression I got from his website, his articles and so on. In short, he clearly knew his stuff! So, fast forward two years I made the right decision back then as meanwhile I have been able to overcome what was ailing me and Dr. Cotsen played a major part in that! Because I was afraid of landing in the wrong hands I must admit that my expectations of him were very high and still he managed to pleasantly surprise me! He is exceptionally intelligent, aware and will see right through you even when you yourself are so busy with yourself that you can no longer see the forest for the trees! He is also very gentle, non invasive and never made me feel uncomfortable even when I was speaking of rather embarrassing, personal details. The one thing which stood out the most to me and which I certainly did not expect from psycho therapy, is how much we ended up laughing together! Dr. Cotsen's approach enabled me, over time, to gain a more accurate, neutral perception of myself rather than being too closed-off immersed in myself and thus the severity of what was on my mind at times began to seem smaller until it lessened altogether! This doctor gets one whole star for being kind enough to refund me the cost of the evaluation so that I could use the money to find a better doctor worth my time. He was easy to contact on the phone and schedule with. His office has a gorgeous view. However, he's a judgemental asshole. I wrote a lengthy review explaining my opinion but it's too long to fit on Yelp, I'll have to find somewhere else to publish. If anyone wants details please contact me. I rarely write reviews, and most of them are positive but honestly I wish I had known going into this how uncomfortable Dr. Cotsen would make me for 45 minutes. He accused me of lying to him, of having overtaken medication in the past (wtf?!), and of leaving out certain medications I had been on the past. I have a complicated health story that involves a childhood chronic pain condition and an adult depression past trauma I won't get into, and extreme anxiety. That's one thing Dr. Cotsen and I had in common (besides our mutual love of flowers)-- he is an extremely anxious person and it was overwhelmingly apparent throughout my appointment. He made me feel like I was doing something wrong or trying to hide things from him, he accused me of drug seeking implying I was an addict-- where in reality though addiction runs in my family and I've been around it I'm so lucky to not have that gene. He would not believe my explanations, constantly cutting me off and reminding me of the time limit (I heard "my 6pm will be waiting about 6 times). It's already hard enough to open up to someone like this, putting all your flaws out on the table, trusting someone that you are in a safe space. Especially as a young-ish woman. I did not feel safe, bolted out as soon as I could. He sweetly reminded me I could stop at the ladies room to maybe wash my tear soaked face on the way to the elevator. I wanted to be able to rewind and just start over, but it was clear he wasn't changing the way he viewed me. I wanted to chalk it up to me being overly sensitive but I was so upset my best friend had to pick me up. It was a terrible, physical damn-near anxiety attack -- wouldn't it be great if I had a knowledgeable doctor to help? I wanted so badly for this appointment to go well, I prepared questions and gave a comprehensive timeline of my medical history when allowed. read more
