My experience with Dr. Shoman has been excellent. I have lived with endo for years, and have had several past surgeries. I felt it returning and found him, as I wanted a new specialist. Rather than rush into surgery, he took a less invasive approach and so far (2 months into a hormonal change) it seems that I will avoid surgery, or at least delay! Also, while his office is out of network, his office assistant Nora is a blessing. She is patient and explained the fees to me more than once because I was a nervous wreck. Another thing I like about this office is that they only have one patient at a time, so no crowded waiting rooms. My only frustration was that we weren't able to complete my initial consultation due to needing a more high tech ultrasound, so I had to go to an imaging place and then have a follow up with the doctor, so what would have been one appointment (and one fee) ended up being three, which was super expensive. That said, if he saved me from surgery it was worth it. read more

STAY FAR AWAY!!!!! If I could rate a 0, I would. I had a decent experience in the office itself, aside the Dr Shoman being 30 minutes late to our apt. I went for basic pap & ovary exam. I was contacted later being told the doctor had my results & needed to call me over the phone.... Then they asked for my card to pay? Since when do doctors charge to take a phone call & give lab results? That's my basic right to know my results? Beyond ridiculous. When our call dropped due to bad service, I called his office to get him to call me back, and they told me he was 'gone for the day' and couldn't call me back... IT WAS 3 PM!!!!!!! He dropped very intense & life altering news to me, that NEEDED to be communicated to me fully before leaving for the day. But instead, he left without telling me any further instructions or anything about my medication for my diagnosis. Finally, the next day when he called me back, he told me my prescription was at a certain pharmacy. When I went there that night, the woman told me that that medicine is not available anywhere in the Tri state area. In fact, she did more research and found out that that medicine has not been manufactured nor distributed in the Tri state area in over two years. ARE YOU JOKING?! How out of touch can you be as a medical professional!!!!! Thank God for that pharmacist who went out of her way to fax & call the office 20 times to try and get me a new prescription the following day DURING THEIR OPEN BUSINESS HOURS. Her efforts meant so much to me, but have since gone nowhere because they advertised as open, and they never responded! I am now, 4 days out from my diagnosis with no medication, no response from the doctor or office, and a heart & head filled with anxiety from this prolonged, miserable processes. read more

If I could give zero stars, I would. My experience with Dr. Shoman and his staff was not only deeply unprofessional, it was frankly alarming. I requested a copy of my medical records a completely standard and legal right as a patient and was immediately met with defensiveness and suspicion. Rather than simply honoring the request, his staff questioned why I wanted them and then proceeded to assume I was dismissing myself as a patient, long before I had made any such decision. The presumption and tone were inappropriate, and the implication was clear: patients asking reasonable questions are treated as problems, not people. Things only got worse from there. I formally withdrew consent for surgery, and yet no one from Dr. Shoman's office took the basic professional step of informing the hospital. When I personally contacted Hackensack Hospital, they had no idea the procedure had been canceled -- because the office had failed to notify them. Let that sink in: a patient withdrew consent for surgery, and the physician's office neglected to inform the surgical facility. The lack of communication, the dismissiveness, the total disregard for standard protocols it was all beyond negligent. I have since found a new provider who actually respects their patients and understands the legal and ethical responsibilities that come with practicing medicine. If you value bodily autonomy, basic communication, and not being treated like a nuisance for exercising your rights stay far away from this practice. To make matters worse, my new GYN does not agree with nor recommend the surgery Dr. Shoman hurriedly scheduled for me. I'm glad I got a second opinion. They should be embarrassed. I went to see Dr. Shoman because I've been experiencing some unusual side effects of my Mirena IUD, so I wanted to have it taken out. Instead of listening to my issues with the Mirena and helping me find a solution he told me that I "shouldn't be having side effects". I didn't realize side effects like extreme cramping, mood swings & night sweats were my fault. So thankful that he could point out why this is actually not a Mirena problem and really just my body's problem. So, to reassure me that everything is just in my head like the silly girl I am, he wrote me a prescription for Prozac. You know, us ladies just need a man to tell us why we're wrong & to heavily medicate us. He's just that kind of doctor. Oh, and don't get me started on tweedle dee & tweedle dum in the reception area! They charged me $5 extra for using my debit card instead of cash to pay. I've never heard of a cash-only doctor, but it sounds like something that existed when abortions were illegal. Go to this doctor at your own risk. read more

I am so lucky to have been recommended Dr. Shoman by a friend of mine. He was a great OB and he made sure I was always informed and comfortable during my first pregnancy. He is very friendly with a great personality and puts all your concerns at ease. You will really get to know him because you will see him at least once a month for an ultrasound and even more when you get closer to delivering. Dr. Shoman was always available when I had a question and would answer my calls personally. The staff in his Hackensack office are very welcoming and helpful as well. Like another yelper said, they know your name and greet you every time you arrive. It's the little things! I was 28 weeks pregnant when my OBGY stopped using my insurance and I was forced to find a new one. I was very nervous switching the doctor and found Dr. Shoman online, based on reviews. Those positive reviews are truly deserved by this doctor and his Hackensack office stuff. He performed my C section ( first time for me, but 2nd pregnancy) and everything went smooth. Everything was explained, told and prepared to help me healed better before/after procedure. His stuff is very nice, knowledgeable and respect your time. I have never waited more than 15 minutes and always being offered best appointment time for me. I will use his service for a future routine appointment and recommend his practice to anyone who is looking for a great doctor! read more

I saw the doctor 2 weeks ago. Adam confirmed that I am pregnant and that the pregnancy is in uterus (I was concerned that it might be an ectopic). He advised to see another specialist who is in my insurance network in 2 weeks. It never happened as my ectopic pregnancy brought me to the hospital earlier. If you have a high risk of ectopic pregnancy - please stay away. He doesn't know the difference between gestational sac and pseudo gestational sac. Update 2: So the doctor states here that he advised to repeat hcg tests and it is just not true. He never mentioned it. Also I would like to point out that the doctor mistook pseudo gestational sac for normal gestational sac. The difference is in shape. Update 3: Okay, so you are stating that you gave me a phone number, which is not true. Also I have seen another obgyn in 48 hours and my hcg doubled. The issue is that you don't know the difference in shapes because hcg can double during the ectopic pregnancy. The other obgyn believed me as I believed your words and didn't perform ultrasound. I am really upset that there are practices like this. Instead of saying, we are so sorry and what can we do for you in the future, they continue on lying and blaming "upset" patient. read more

Patient beware. If I could give 0 stars I would. I first met Dr. Shoman when he practiced in Hoboken where I live. He then left and started his own practice, but I stayed with the practice and just saw a different provider. Fast forward a few years and I wanted to see Dr. Shoman because I was going to plan to get pregnant and he delivered at Hackensack which was a must for my husband and I. I went to my first appointment and had my annual appointment. No charge was billed to me. Fast forward I go again for my next appointment this past April and receive a bill. I was confused as to why I was charged this time, but not last. I received the same appointment and had the same insurance. I spoke to Brittany at the front who directed me to contact I believe her name was Nora. Brittany explained Dr. Shoman is out of network and Nora was supposed to call me prior to my appointment to explain my insurance coverage. Which NEVER happened. I worked at a dental practice for 15 years so I am very familiar and knowledgeable of insurance, in vs out of network. Some people have 30% out of network coverage some can have up to 90%. I explained to Nora my frustration and how upset I was that nothing was explained. I only signed a form acknowledging Dr. Shoman was out of network. Again, this does not justify a financial coordinator explaining my benefits, my patient responsibility, and do I choose to stay with Dr. Shoman or find someone in network. I asked Nora if I could speak to Dr. Shoman because I was highly upset. She told me he does not take time to talk to discuss financials and things of this matter and that's why he has 14 people who manage his office to handle these issues. Again, coming from a dental practice my doctor would never neglect discussing an unhappy situation with a patient whether it was cosmetic, financials, or whatever. Nora told me I should've called my insurance prior to my appointment? Haha. Isn't that the purpose of having the 14 people at the practice to review and discuss these things with patients especially because every insurance is different. I got the same thing done twice there, my annual. Except one time I was charged the other I was not. Nora said as a courtesy they waived it, again never even told me they did this. Had I known I could've asked why, realized my appointment isn't covered and I can stay or find a doctor in network where it'll be covered 100%. **please be aware prior to your appointment and ask for your financial responsibility for the appointment** and I will NOT be back. I have already found another doctor in jersey city who is more personable, trustworthy and explained all fees upfront and I signed. Signing a paper that just acknowledged a doctor is out of network is surface level and doesn't detail what's expected of a patient. Lastly my husband had genetic testing done prior to us trying to get pregnant. He went for the appointment and they didn't even know what he was there for. They thought his name was the gene he was being tested for. They are beyond unorganized, and unprofessional. My husband got a negative result with Dr. Shoman, but just had the same gene tested with the Jersey city doctor and came back positive. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS DOCTOR. EVER!!! Also to add: the office emailed me to dismiss me from the practice due to the incident. I was denied being able to talk to Dr Shoman about my concern how the practice handled the situation. Look up Dr Shoman, you'll find he was sued for not making a patient aware of genetic condition and legally changed his name...... good luck to anyone who continues to use him or this practice. read more

This is my first time making a review on a doctor because I feel necessary to warn people not to go to this doctor. I went to him for a birth control prescription and an ultrasound prescription for my right breast (routine ultrasound check for breast lump), everything seemed fine up to that point. After my ultrasound, radiologist suggested me to do a biopsy and he sent the hospital a biopsy prescription on my left breast, that was the time when I started to feel how unreliable this doctor is. After the biopsy, radiologist told me that he should be contacting me on the following Monday to tell me the result. Of course I didn't receive any phone call from him so I called the office and the nurse told me he went on vacation. Any responsible doctor would at least ask their colleague or nurse to call the patient about the test results if they know the results would come in and they will be away. And what piss me off the most is I received a bill from the doctor office charged me $134 for a level 3 office visit which implies that the doctor has performed complicated examination but all he has done was to write two prescriptions. And when I called them on the phone to ask about this billing information, they were saying they can give me a discount. If the bill is true and the amount is honest, why would they offer a discount. Months later I decided to pay the bill not because I think the amount is reasonable, but I don't want to deal with anything anymore with this doctor so I sent back my credit card information and the next thing I realised is they charged $148 on my credit card instead of $134. If you unfortunately went to this doctor already and received a bill that you think is overpriced, you can definitely report fraud, my bill is a perfect example. read more

I did a lot of research in looking for the right OB as this is my first pregnancy and I'm considered high risk (over 35). He is a great doctor. I'm 39 1/2 weeks pregnant and am thankful that I had a doctor as knowledgable, caring, friendly, and attentive as doctor Shoman to walk me through the process. He is on the more conservative side but I'm ok with that given that I am considered high risk and our goal is to deliver a healthy baby. His staff is very friendly; they remember you by name when you get into the office and also when you call for an appointment. I've had no problems making appointments even on the same day. He returns phone calls on weekends. He has an office in Hoboken and is affiliated with both Hackensack Medical University Hospital and Jersey City Medical. read more

I rarely ever write reviews, but I am writing this one to hopefully prevent others from having to go through the harrowing ordeal I had to go through during my pregnancy. When I found out I was pregnant, I decided I needed to find a great OBGYN. I asked friends for references, and Dr. Shoman was recommended to me. I decided to make an appointment, as I had read his great reviews, and my husband and I were so happy we had found the right doctor. We started going to the prenatal visits every month without issue, until the company I work for decided to switch our insurance provider from Aetna to United Health Care. When I found out, I immediately asked Dr. Shoman if his office accepted this new insurance, so I would know if I needed to find a different doctor. He assured me that he accepted this insurance, and I also called the office to confirm. I called the billing department, and they confirmed that they accept this insurance. They advised me that once my new policy became effective, to let the nurse or receptionist know. So I continued being seen by Dr. Shoman without any issues. When I was about 32 weeks pregnant, I got a call from the billing department. They told me that my insurance provider would not cover my delivery. So I contacted my provider immediately, and they advised me to do transition care. Nora, told me not to worry, they have had similar situations and we will get through this. She never told me no we could not do transition care because we are out network. In one of my visits, I spoke with Dr. Shoman about the situation and he said to stay calm, he would negotiate with the insurance, and with transition care, and he repeatedly assured us that they would make sure that things would work out. I trusted my doctor and I valued his knowledge and experience. The very next day, despite these repeated assurances, Nora called me to tell me that Dr. Shoman would not see me again. I was shocked and I became extremely upset, As she was aware, I was going to give birth soon, and I also suffered from hypertension, so this stress was not good for me or for my baby. I told her I needed to find a doctor ASAP, and she said they would share my medical records with whichever doctor I could find, but she didn't even refer me to a new doctor or offer to transfer me to someone who could assist with this. They offered no sympathy for me or my situation. My husband decided to call Dr. Shoman to see what we could do, or if he could recommend another doctor since I was so far along in my pregnancy. The doctor only reiterated that he could not keep seeing me, and he did not apologize or sympathize with my situation, and he did not refer me to anyone either. He was cold and unfeeling, and simply told us we could pick up my medical records from his office if I needed them. I was in shock at his total indifference and lack of compassion. Here I was going through the most difficult time of my life, and my doctor only cared about getting paid. Following this, I went to Dr. Shoman's office to pick up my records. While I was there, I asked if I could possibly speak to Dr. Shoman for a quick moment. I had been having a very difficult time finding an OBGYN who was willing to take me so late in my pregnancy. The receptionist nastily told me that he could not speak with me. The doctor came out and greeted me, but did not ask me how I was doing or if I had found another doctor. He would not allow me to speak with him and ask him the few questions that I had. I understand that he has a very busy and demanding schedule, but he could have spared two minutes to provide me with some referrals. It would have made the process much easier, and much less stressful. I did manage to find a new doctor willing to take me. Thankfully, this doctor is amazing, professional, and caring, and it is a blessing to have found him. They say everything happens for a reason, this needed to occur so that I could see Dr. Shoman's true colors. I sincerely hope that Dr. Shoman changes his arrogant attitude, and begins to treat all people with more respect, not just when he is receiving their money. Being a doctor does not make you God or superior to anyone else. In fact, as a doctor, you have taken an oath to have the utmost respect for human life, and it seems to me that Dr. Shoman may want to re-read the promises he made. The Hippocratic Oath states that doctors must work towards the benefit of the health of the public, and that they are accountable for their actions should problems arise. Had the doctor abided by this oath, he would have assisted me in finding a new doctor, and he would have provided me with courtesy, compassion, and respect, instead of dropping me like a bad habit. If you are pregnant and reading this, I hope you find a doctor that values and respects human life, and is a caring and decent human being, but unfortunately you won't find one in Dr. Shoman. Thought I had found a great doctor until now!! I am having issues that I need addressed and after scheduling an appointment I get a phone call saying he is not seeing anyone unless they are pregnant. No notification what so ever to his current patients and I am now left scrambling to find another doctor asap to deal with this issue. Great service Doc...wouldn't waste my time here!! Follow-up *** After begging to be seen, I was told they could squeeze me in until they read my review and have now cancelled my appointment and are refusing treatment. If you want a doctor who puts his ego ahead of patient care then by all means take the risk. Set up a consultation to meet with the dr to see if he was who I wanted to deliver my child. I confirmed they are in Neywork The doctor seemed nice. However The office staff was vey unusual. Initial appt there was a 3 week wait to get an appt and they said I had to be pregnant to get an appt with the dr. Okay... The. A 45 min wait before I was even seen by an LPN. $10 co pay but it must be in cash unless you want to pay an additional 10%. Then 30 mins to see the dr. For all of 10 mins including a sonogram. Then I find out that evening by the billing office the dr is not in network with my insurance or any insurance. And Nora the billing manager stated the dr. Is content with what the Insurance company pays out and doesn't require the patient to pay for anything more than what the insurance pays out. Aside from an additional $100. Copay is required at each visit. So I have been calling all week to get my results on some blood work. The typical front desk girl tells me it's not ready results are not back. Last call was Wednesday. Then I call again Friday morning. Be mindful Thursday was a holiday. Another girl ( based off of friendly tone on phone ) answered and confirmed they were in. Denise was super friendly and stated results are in and Doctor must release them. That was the only pleasant part of this experience. Dr is not to blame. But unfortunately his front desk staff is "special" to say the least. Just a shame cause i would have probably returned to the office to see dr. Shoman But the office staff ruined my experience. Sad thing is. I will share this experience with every mom I meet in the nursing room at buy buy baby and babies r us and any other time I speak to a mom to be or new mom. Extra star. I really cannot say enough great things about this man and his practice. He was my ob for my first child 7.5 yrs. ago and I am now back with my second pregnancy. I currently see him at his Hackensack office. He is very attentive, caring, and kind. I don't write too many reviews, only when I really feel it necessary. This is one of those times. To put it simply, all subsequent children I have will be delivered by him and anytime I am asked for a referral for an ob, he is the only name I give. Although he has many great qualities as an ob, I appreciate most his ability to listen without judgement and the fact that he doesn't 'push' all sorts of unnecessary tests, pills, prenatal vitamins, etc. just to make more money off of you. I made a Yelp account just to share the experience I just had today. I've been a gynecological patient of Dr. Shoman's since September 2015 and have seen him three times since then. My last appointment was a month ago. I recently scheduled a follow-up appointment to that one for later this week, and it was confirmed by ZocDoc this morning -- only for me to get a call from his office that if I wasn't pregnant, they couldn't help. Apparently he had decided to focus on his obstetrics rather than his gynecological practice, and they simply decided not to inform any of his current gynecological patients that he would no longer see them. Incredibly unprofessional, totally ridiculous. It's a shame, really, since his staff are such nice people. Aside from this, at my last appointment he brusquely convinced me to switch birth control methods (while being fairly dismissive of my concerns with it) and promised me that if I didn't like it, I could tell him and we could switch back, no problems. I really wasn't going to write a review and I really don't care what negative thing you want to reply to me, I just want you to know the pain and suffering you costed me. This doctor for me was greaT during my pregnancy. I stressed to him since the day I saw him how nervous I was and how it was my first child and that I have anxiety. He was always really reassuring and answered all my questions. We planned my c section for maybe a month or two out and it was great. One thing I stressed to him was that I wanted things to be the way I wanted them. I was paying A high rate through my insurance to see him because I liked and trusted him. The day I was induced he showed up once to talk with me the second day. It was fine I didn't need him there and he had already had things planned out for me. I have anxiety so he knew I was going to be freaking out. He had medicine for me Incase of pain and even something to help with the nerves, it was great. The hospital knew how nervous I was as well and introduced me to every single individual that would be assisting in my c section it was really reassuring. Well c section time comes. Dr Shoman shows up like it's a party with another doctor. He never once mentioned before or even when he came to visit me that one of his "colleagues " would be there or be witnessing my c section because GOD TRUST AND BELIEVE IF I KNEW I WOULD OF SAID NOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!! He shows up with this random doctor who's literally behind his shoulder. I asked dr shoman to give me a second literally to proccess the feeling of anestesia and he ignored it started cutting and I felt a lot of pressure and I went into full blown panic mode and closed my eyes. I never once opened my eyes after that. It was the saddest thing I've ever done but this for me was so traumatic. He had to sedate me because I was crying and wouldn't open my eyes. I stressed to you from day one that I wanted things my way. You went behind my back bought a random stranger and you couldn't wait one single second for me. Because of how horrible and traumatic for me my birth way I experienced ppd with borderline psychosis. You caused me the worst birth and I had nightmares about it. I still replay all these details in my head and it makes me fucking sick and sad that things turned out like this that I didn't even want to open my eyes. I didn't even see my child's birth or enjoy it. I want you to know what you did to me was wrong and because of you I had a horrible birth and I was so traumatized by experience.i trusted you and because of you I had a horrible start to motherhood. read more

Dr. Shoman is extremelly knowleadgable, caring and treats every patient as if they were his only one. He has a very strong academic background and is the most qualified of obgyns I have encountered. What makes his so strong, however, is his ability to combine this academic background with excellent bedside manners and, most importantly, a true concern for the patient. In contrast to other doctors I have had in the past, Dr. Shoman always conducts a comprehesive approach to every situation and is not afraid to use his sonogram machine that he uses masterfully without the help of any technician. I have had very unfortunate experiences with two NJ doctors in the past. Since I am aware of how painful and frustrating these experiences can be, I highly recommend Dr. Shoman. A friend recommended I ditch Riverside for Dr. Shoman and I am so glad I did. He treats patients like HUMANS! His bedside manner is incredible. He is understanding, warm, caring, empathetic, and clearly an expert in his field. I normally hate writing reviews or posting publicly about my personal experience with the service provider etc. But, in this case, I am so overjoyed and grateful to Dr. Adam Shoman for the care that he provided to me during my pregnancy and delivery that I want to share a bit about my experience. Like most, my pregnancy was not without its issues. I had acute nausea from start to finish, which Dr. Shoman managed closely and helped me ensure my baby's weight stayed up (she was born at nearly 8 pounds). I also had thyroid issue and negative blood type. Dr. Shoman worked with me at each step to provide excellent, compassionate care. He made it very clear that he does not treat numbers --- he treats people. We knew I had to be induced before 40 weeks due to my negative blood type. At one point during the induction I got a fever and was concerned that I would have a C-section. Even though I was completely open to the c-section, I still wanted to try for vaginal birth. Dr. Shoman gave me the confidence to do so by pointing out that my fever might not be from infection; instead it could be from a hot room or other factors. He suggested that we monitor it and wait it out (if I could / was up for it). He wound up being right: I had a vaginal birth after a very long induction which was largely brought on by natural use of a peanut ball rather than lots of meds. After delivery, I had almost critically low hemoglobin and was borderline for a blood transfusion. Again, Dr. Shoman listened very carefully to my symptoms and determined that I might not actually need a blood transfusion. He helped me develop a game plan while also monitoring me very closely. He is such an excellent communicator and really LISTENS to his patients, which I think helps him hit the sweet spot of customized care along the way. Even though he's a well-known surgeon and medical expert, my experience of him is that he is deeply compassionate and kind. He is also humble, which I love in a doctor----arrogance is the last thing I want to see in a health care provider (confidence, sound-mindedness and expansive knowledge, but NOT arrogance). He is the first to consult other doctors and probe further. He gave me confidence, peace of mind, and a sense of control over my pregnancy.
