Dr. John is an excellent veterinarian. Our cat, Dawson, came to us six years ago with a multitude of health issues, but is doing very well thanks to the care of Dr. John and his staff. We transferred care of our animals to this vet practice recently ad have so far been very impressed. While we had to wait awhile, the staff was very understanding and kind even when our girl had an accident on their entry mat. They apologized and explained that they had a euthanasia that had taken extra time; having been in that situation more than once, we certainly understood. Then the doctor came in and spent an extraordinary amount of time with us and our elderly girl. She made sure we understood options and possible outcomes and helped us make decisions regarding our pet's care. She took a reasonable approach, not the most expensive. We hope to continue to receive this level of care. I would certainly recommend them. read more

I was very impressed during our consultation with Dr. O'Neil and his vet techs. Dr. O'Neill took a lot of time examining our dog and answering all of our questions. Both Dr. O'Neil and the two vet techs called us multiple times during the dental procedure to update us on the progress and get our input as to how we wanted to proceed. Dr. O'Neill came very highly recommended by our personal vet, and I was not disappointed. I would highly recommend this practice to anyone looking for a thorough, professional vet practice. I am sitting here with my cat just crying. This is my vet, this is the organization I choose to care for my animals. Now, my cat is sick and they told me they dont have time to see him. No emergency appointments, nothing. I assumed they would leave a few appointments for sick pets, or just make time to squeeze them in. But, sadly no. They just tell you sorry, we can see you is 2 weeks. My poor cat is depending on me to take care of him, and I can't find anyone to help him. I have called every vet in a 100 mile radius and they all say the same thing, new patient appointments are scheduled about a week out. It is so frustrating, they don't care about their patients. If they did they would have told me to bring my cat right in. I'm going to take him to the ER, I have no other choice. Shame on Adamstown vet clinic for not stepping up and treating one of their patients in need. Go about your day simply giving vaccines, cutting nails and all the other routine stuff. But when one of your patients is truly in need, you turn your back, shame on you. read more

Called with a Cat in need, shaking and in pain and was told to take her to emergency care an hour and half away. Keep in mind I'm 3 minutes from AVH and it is the only place she has every gone. Had been to AVH before and had lost a previous cat there, but some how now they can't find my records. Total incompentence and total disreguard for my cat! Words can't explain my angry and hurt. Very bad experience.....up until June 14 I had no issue. I am appalled at the lack of empathy, compassion and clinical skills that was shown that day. Let me start by saying I LOVE this Vet!! My parents and my grandmother take their animals here, and when I mentioned who they are and what animals they bring, the staff lit up and began talking about how much they love the dogs. The staff clearly loves and remembers all the animals they see. I have a kitten, and she is not a fan of the vets. Her first trip to a different vet left her traumatized, and I let them know that here. What did they do? They immediately got out treats, and let her sniff them and let her love on them before even getting down to examining her. They let her get to know them, and truly cared about how she was feeling and reacting. They did not scruff her at all, and they were very soothing when talking to her and with me. At the first place I took my kitten, she cried and yowled upon getting shots and getting her temperature taken. Not here. She was so relaxed and calm, even when they took blood! She didn't cry or yowl or anything. They even took the blood in the examination room so Turbo (my girl) could see me and know that it was okay. They understand so well that I'm a worried momma, so when I got her spayed they called with constant updates. When I brought her in that day the staff were all so excited to see her as well. This staff truly cares about the well being of their patients, and truly cares about us humans too. They were so comforting when I got my girl spayed and so helpful in helping me understand things that were happening. They even sent a little card to welcome us to their practice!! My girl came home and she was happy and excited and not traumatized. She still needs to warm up to vet trips, but she no longer is scared to get in her carrier after her first visit there. Avoid bringing your pets to this Vet Hospital at all costs. I brought both my dogs to this office when first moving to the area 2 years ago. I had a satisfactory experience. Recently brought my little 12 lb dog in for an ear infection. I was not allowed in the office due their own office policy regarding Covid. My dog was returned to me with an injured leg that they deny happened while she was in their care. I am now taking her to another Vet for treatment of her leg. No one in this office showed any caring or empathy for my dog. At one point the Vet herself said my dog was left alone in room. Negligence. We previously have had good experiences and a positive opinion of Adamstown Veterinary Hospital. However, that feeling has changed with our most recent visits. We brought our dog in for an ear infection. The ear infection was addressed and since cleared up. However, our dog left with a limp and apparent pain. We called back the same day and an anti inflammatory medication was provided. I find it strange that our dog went in with an ear infection and was given back to us with a limp and an issue with one of her hind legs. We were not permitted in the office during her exam. After several conversations and review of the medical records, there have been discrepancies and contradictory statements made by the staff. In addition, it was noted in the medical records that this may have happened on the car ride home. Our dogs are always properly restrained in a harness and the back seat is covered with a pet hammock. We take the safety of our pets very seriously. To insinuate that this could have happened during a five minute car ride home is overly assumptive and insulting. We have found out that at one point during the visit that our dog was left alone in the room. It was suggested that maybe she injured herself from jumping while she was in the room by herself. She's 12 lbs. Where could she possibly be jumping from while alone in an exam room? It was also noted that our dog wasn't restrained "too much" during her exam. What exactly is that supposed to mean? Was she injured while restrained? One and a half weeks later, our dog still has the condition, which has now worsened. Another call was placed to Adamstown Veterinary Hospital and we were told that there would be an additional $90 "fit in" fee to see her today on top of the normal exam fee. I find it despicable that we were told there was an additional fee to see our dog for an issue they are well aware of. An issue that may have been a result of their own negligence. I could go into much further detail. While I understand the need to be cautious regarding the current situation with Covid-19, I would highly recommend using a veterinary practice that allows you to be with your pet during the exam. Then there would be no question as to what truly happens while your pet is in someone else's care. I would suggest finding a veterinary practice that is forthright and transparent. I smell a cover up and a business that is more concerned about self preservation and profit than doing what's right. 9/08/2020 update. Reduced rating to 1 star. We received a phone call from the office manager (Candace?) who refused to provide her last name. She and the practice refused to take any responsibility in this matter. She insisted that that our dog walked out of the office to our vehicle, when in fact, our dog was carried out to our vehicle by one of the assistants. The office manager repeatedly talked over us and was belligerent throughout the conversation. She ended the conversation by stating she is sending our other dog's records to us and closing the account. We did not request the account be closed. However, there is no way we would we would entrust our pets' care to them ever again. Absolutely no compassion has been shown by Adamstown Veterinary Hospital based upon these most recent experiences. This is not how a veterinary practice should be treating a pet or the pet's owners. To say that we are disgusted by how this has been handled is and understatement. We fully understand that animals can be difficult to handle or can get hurt. However, this is a good-natured, 12 lb dog we are talking about. All I know is that our dog came in with an ear infection and left with a hind leg that either she holds up or limps on. read more

Twice, my vet referred me to Adamstown & Dr. John for both of my elderly dachshunds dentals. Dr, John gave them a thorough exam and explained in detail the amount of work that both dentals would entail. These drs and their staff are exceptional. Very compassionate when our dog needed to b put down. They let us take the lengthy time that we needed at that time. Nope, EXPENSIVE and no help, seems to be all about the money. A lot of things suggested that really have nothing to do with the particular health issue but more so to build a huge bill, Had my dog there for a constipation issue, their treatment accomplished absolutely nothing other than causing the poor creature more discomfort. We called back 2 days later and they just wanted to do the same thing all over again for even more money. What are you gonna see in a second Xray that you cant see in the first one?, its a small dog, the entire animal is in the first Xray. went there for decades when bob and his wife owned it before they sold it and moved to Alaska. the day i had my only issue was, erin (lady with glasses in pic) had a real issue in general or a bad day, I had previously had her when I had to put my cat down, the second time was a sick puppy, I not only got accused of yelling at staff which I never did and had my neighbor who brought me standing right in the room the whole time. even my neighbor said when did you yell I was here the whole time? I was treated like absolute trash for no reason by her, from the way she treated me to the way I was talked to, she accused me of doing something I never did which was disrespect staff, I have never in my decades of going there with over a dozen pets with various issues down to putting them down, ever react in the way she accused me of while she was not even in the room, at best I should have gotten an apology, no one is perfect, I know the stress with sick pets can be bad on the staff as much as the owner-- however the treatment I got by erin m was not only unprofessional but rude and uncalled for--- never in my over 20 years of going there have I ever had a problem nor since at my new vet. the pure lack of empathy and nastiness was off the charts and something that was new for me to experience when usually I had dealt with dr. john who owns the lab named Otis (that's to show I was a real customer) my thoughts are learn how to treat people equally, if you are personally stressed out walk away, I would totally understand it but, don't assume you know everything before you accuse someone of disrespecting or yelling at staff, which never happened. instead of reporting you to the state board, I chose to walk away, but that has stuck with me for sometime, to have to put a dog down then get abused by a staff member, just wrong on so many levels. when I went to pick up my dogs ashes not one person came out to apologize for their behavior that day. read more

I have gone there since 1996, way before these people were even there,, they were very rude the day I was in, they scold people as opposed to asking questions, assuming? I am not the only one who thinks they are rude and nasty there most of the time, no one in my neighborhood goes there since the orig owners bob and diane left however I continued to go, but a recent visit was a disaster-- learn how to treat every customer with the same respect- will never go there again I take my pets to reading instead, Erin Murphy (heavy set, average height,, glasses with short curly reddish brown hair)-- in particular came in and yelled at me not even knowing the situation, when I had a neighbor there with me the whole time and now as a witness that I was accused of something that I never did to staff, unprofessional, never got an apology for their treatment or them being wrong about the situation either, YOU WERE WRONG AND HORRIBLY WRONG, the way I was treated was also wrong. if you were having a bad day and apologized I would have understood, it was a terrible day for me as well, I had to put my dog to sleep and the way I was treated was wrong. my neighbor even stated how wrong miss murphy was!!! saying she was floored at how I was treated, I DID NOTHING TO HER TO GET THAT KIND OF TREATMENT! read more
