oreo milkshake
Rebecca H.

An Athens staple! This convenience store, mixed with a pharmacy, mixed with a post office, mixed with a lunch spot, is a great experience. Breakfast & lunch is served until 4 pm. The staff is incredibly friendly. For COVID, masks are required in the store but dine-in is open. One employee was sanitizing each appliance frequently. We got one oreo milkshake, one chocolate milkshake, and one "frots" (fries + tots). I loved the oreo milkshake, definitely my favorite. And only for $2.95! The fries are crinkle cut and cooked in front of us, definitely better than the tots in my opinion. Loved this place and want to go back for breakfast!

The milk machine, cold soft drinks, and a partial menu.

You can't tell it from the exterior -- as is usually the case -- but this pharmacy is actually a time machine. The space-time continuum becomes unexpectedly flexible as you walk in the front door. Right past the cash register and to the left of puzzles and toys is an old fashioned diner, replete with a milk machine, metal stools, deep fryers, and signed memorabilia. I had a wonderful lunch here last week, consisting of a pimento cheese burger, a regular cheeseburger, fries, a coke, and a chocolate milkshake. The other diners, average age 6, seemed to approve of my selections. The pimento cheese burger was gooey and wonderful [and rang in at under $2.00!]. The chocolate milkshake was thick and bordering on a little too sweet, but as a dessert, was perfect. Service was friendly and familiar, with patrons greeting the server/cook/milkshake maker by first name. ADD Drugs is an institution and a wonder. There's nothing like underage regulars sliding up to the counter and ordering snacks and drinks with their allowance to snap you out of your annoying postmodern apathy. They make a pretty mean grilled cheese, there, too.

Hot Dogs with Chili, mustard and onions

OMG! OMG! OMG! Did I say OMG?! Why did we only stop here right before we were leaving town?! I wouldn't have eaten ANYwhere else had we eaten there earlier on the trip! My GAWD in heaven where do I start?! I honestly wanted to try one of everything that I enjoy...pimento cheese sandwich, chicken salad sandwich, cheeseburgers, hot dogs with chili mustard and onions and fries. I really could have tried quite a few things because the prices were so reasonable! Well...after settling down my inner foodie, I decided to go with 2 hot dogs cooked well with chili, mustard and onions and an order of french fries. Y'ALL....in my most Southern foodie voice, those hot dogs were SO freaking good! They were beef, full and abundantly beef. The chili was not home made but it was ADD Drug Store griddle good! The onions were just the right amount of musty. I know that is weird but a true hot dog connoisseur understands what I mean. I remember reading the Ramona Quimby books by Beverly Clearly growing up and she always talked about this burger place she loved to go to that had french fries that were "crisp on the outside and mealy on the inside"....THESE are those fries! LAWD have mercy they were SO good! I'm looking forward to the next trip to Athens....ADD Drug Store will be the FIRST stop!

The food: I went with the Fried Chicken Blue Plate. Between the regular and the Nashville Hot, the Nashville was the winner--flavorful and moist without being overwhelming with the spice. Huge shoutout to my server for suggesting the brussel sprouts; that glaze is incredible and they were easily my favorite part of the plate. The mashed sweet potatoes were unique--I'm still debating if I liked them or loved them. The jalapeño cornbread was a bit sweet for my taste but on par with most restaurant cornbread. The mac & cheese wasn't bad, but also didn't do much for me like most restaurant mac & cheese. The cocktail: Do not sleep on Nana's Naissance. I wasn't sure what to expect from the ingredients, but it's like an elevated take on Rumchata. The service: I was seated at the bar and experienced a noticeable delay--a group that arrived well after me almost finished their meal before mine arrived. However, the waitress acknowledged the wait before I even had to mention it and made things right. I really appreciate that kind of proactive service. We're all human, and they handled the situation very professionally.

We had the ones with Cajun seasoning which were really good but the garlic fries are seriously over the top. When we return (yes, of course we will return) I think I just want garlic fries. Forget the burger I just want to eat those amazing fries. It's a good burger. Juicy, well cooked. Not overdone. The bread was not my favorite. Why does everyone insist on brioche buns? They don't really work for a cheeseburger. It is still a damned good burger. The only real problem is that it will occupy too much room in my stomach that could otherwise be filled with garlic fries. The dining room is a bit small. Let's call it intimate. The staff are wonderful. Go. Eat fries. Life is good.

This is not a Chicago dog, the bun was toasted and not soft with poppy seeds. Bit it was good. The fries were freshly cooked, crispy, and hot. Cheese sauce was excellent. I go to a 40 Watt or Foundry show about once a month. I will be back to Clocked again to try a burger. I like this place.

That said, fight the traffic and construction weirdness and get your butt in here. I had the georgia peach French toast plate with eggs and bacon. Definitely the best French toast I've had in a long time. One (albeit minor) issue - they said they do "soft scrambled" eggs, but they came out pretty much regular. This is a common issue with pretty much every breakfast restaurant I go to, so no removal of a star. But I'd recommend you tell waitstaff that you don't do soft scrambled if you really don't. Thus is my pain when recounting our visit to Mama's Boy. We stopped here for breakfast before heading out of town on a beautiful Saturday afternoon in September. Prior to visiting, I read that the wait here can be a bit intimidating but we lucked out coming on a day when there was an away football game which I think took some folks out of town as we only had to wait about 20-25 minutes. It's a casual joint where you order at the counter (but only after you've been given a table) and the food is bangin'. I was not playing it healthy here, going for the Truck Stop Biscuits & Gravy which was a biscuit topped with sausage gravy, sweet tea brined fried chicken, and topped with scrambled eggs. For my side I went with grits (because when in the south!) and of course I had a refreshing strawberry lemonade to wash it all down with. Everything was excellent. The biscuit was fluffy, the chicken was juicy, the gravy was flavorful...and it was all perfect together. And the grits were so rich and smooth and so very tasty! It was casual service but everyone who we encountered was really lovely. Bless the mama's boys of the world for bringing us such a delicious dining experience!

I stopped at Brett's Casual American with my service dog, Stormy. The server was excellent -- respectful, professional, and even asked before petting her. He mentioned he used to foster Dobermans growing up, and he clearly understood how to behave around a working dog. The issue was with the owner. He demanded to see "papers," insisted Stormy needed a vest with a visible ID tag, and told me I was "harassing his staff," even though the staff had been nothing but kind. For anyone who doesn't know: under the ADA, businesses cannot require documentation, certification, or specific gear. They can only ask two questions: Is the dog a service animal required because of a disability What task the dog is trained to perform What crossed the line for me was when he reached out and touched Stormy without permission. I walked out immediately. Touching a working service dog is not only inappropriate -- it interferes with medical equipment and puts the handler at risk. It felt like a personal violation, not just a misunderstanding. Most people in Athens are great about this, and I really appreciated the server who handled everything correctly. I'm sharing this so neighbors are aware of the proper etiquette and to help prevent situations like this in the future.
