Ahhhh Farta Brutos...my first cod meal in Portugal. When we stopped to look at the menu the woman acting as hostess and server didn't use any English but convinced us to stop. FARTA BRUTOS, is a tiny place with a LOT of character that's been around for 113 years (as I mentioned above, our waitress spoke zero English so this was a little challenging at first). After our wine tasting I decided to have another taste of red from the Douro region (no, it doesn't really pair well with what I had, but I don't care). It's a crappy photo, but we had an appetizer plate (they're sneaky-they bring it to you THEN tell you if you don't want it they can take it away...we kept it). Olives (for Wifey) and a tuna mixture that didn't seem to have much more than olive oil and finely chopped onions - and it came with some Portuguese bread - I loved it. For our main meals, Wifey had a "fish rice" meal and I had a baked cod dish with potatoes and spinach that had enough garlic on it to keep the vampires away for the rest of the trip. We finished with a chocolate mouse that was nothing like anything I ever had. It was more like a thick frosting...so rich and chocolaty...so good... There are plenty of great places to eat here in Lisbon...the struggle isn't FINDING a place it's CHOOSING a place

Tinto - Quinta de Porrais, full bodied, 14%, €35. The couvert is bread and a yummy, sweetish tuna pâté. We shared 2 pratos: 1. Dourado de Português - whole fish in a tomato, pepper, onion sauce. Accompanied by potatoes. We picked that fish to death to get every last morsel. 2. Arroz de Pato - baked rice with duck meat pieces inside the cassoulet and sausage on top. Rich and crispy. The aroma was seductive. Dessert was an assortment of custard, orange and plum. Coffe and aguardente. + Excellent service from the owner. + Charming atmosphere. Cana Verde is situated in what used to be the sailor and fisherman market district and while many of us (locals and tourists alike) opted to have a sit down lunch, there were many workers who popped in for a bite or coffee quickly at the counter. Very legit. Since sardines are what Portugal is all about, I ventured a try and ordered the Sardinhas Assadas (grilled sardines). These were served whole, brilliantly seasoned with potatoes, salad, oil & vinegar and fresh bread. These were big' ol sardines, about 6-8 inches long. They were piping hot. Since they were cooked and served whole, all manner of fish guts spilled out and I just tried really hard to think that I was getting my Omega 3's while scooping up the fish bits. The richness/oiliness/flavor of the dish was quite intense, and I really had to try to make it through three of the four sardines. Luckily, the half-bottle of vinho verde I ordered made it easier to wash down the fishes. I chose this restaurant because when I passed by I could see chickens roasting in one window, and a group dining robustly with mountains of plates of fishbones. I knew I would regret it if I didn't go in. Glad I did, glad I tried the sardines, but to be 100% honest, I wish I tried the chicken..the other house specialty. Will never forget this experience!

The room is bright, lively, and full of energy, with an open kitchen and wood fired oven that immediately sets the tone. The pizza is exactly what you hope for. Light, airy crust with just the right amount of char, simple ingredients, and perfect balance. Every bite tastes intentional and well executed, the kind of pizza that does not need anything extra to impress. The pasta is just as strong. Rich, comforting, and full of flavor, it feels like something you would be served at a neighborhood spot in Italy rather than an Italian restaurant abroad. Nothing feels overdone or adapted for tourists. It tastes authentic and confident. The atmosphere adds to the experience. It is busy without feeling chaotic, polished without feeling formal. You can tell people come here to eat well and enjoy themselves, not to rush through a meal. Forno D'Oro delivers exactly what it promises. Exceptional Italian food, a warm and energetic space, and a dining experience that genuinely makes you feel transported. If you are craving true Italian pizza and pasta in Lisbon, this is an easy yes.

Food smelled delicious as the fresh fish is grilled and brought out fresh. Most fishes also come with a side of boiled potatoes lightly salted (see picture of sardines). It's a classic European restaurant on the inside with many small tables inside with a few on the patio. Staff were overall very pleasant with a constant stream of staff members bringing food and checking in. As we were travelers and do not know much Portuguese at all, they still made us feel welcome and had good English language skills.

Squid here was delicious, perfectly cooked, perfectly seasoned, and a bunch of it. Great potatoes to go with it, too. I'd eat here every day if I could. The "couvert" was fish pate from a tin, not made in-house, but it's Portugal, so the tinned fish was still great, obviously. The olives with it were just ok, but the bread was great. I was also happy that they did, indeed, understand that we were going to share it, but only wanted a couvert plate serving for one (I hadn't been sure.) I was a little sad my wife really wanted red meat that day, so we couldn't get the seafood sampler platter for 2, but her pork chop was also great, I know because it was also huge, so I ended up eating like a third of it. Also perfectly cooked and seasoned, and it did go great with fries. The fries were also great, too, super freshly made and perfectly crispy, though the one downside, everything else but the fries were ready super quickly, then the fries showed up after we were about halfway done eating the rest of it. Definitely freshly cooked, though! Also unlike the place the previous day that served us exceptionally mediocre squid the previous day, they also sell very affordable wines here. They have a good number of extremely reasonably priced half-bottles of all types, but we didn't need a whole half-bottle of wine, so I just got a glass of the house white, which was, at least as of a couple months ago, only 2.5 euros! Seriously, I'd come here all the time if I could.I wish I had gotten to try everything on the menu.
