The…read moreCamp is owned by SUNY Cortland and is utilized as a field study station for environmental sciences, biology, history and many other college majors. Rooms are available in the main house, individual cabins and larger cabins sleeping up to 8. I stayed in the Cedars cabin, which was one of the larger cabins with room for 8. There are four bedrooms with two beds in each. Each room has its own bathroom. Small but operational. The great room in the center of the cabin had heat. The individual bedrooms did not. Small, individual space heaters were available. I slept in a sleeping bag over the single bed. My roommate was simpatico. WiFi/cell service is inconsistent. There is no television/cable service that I saw. It was late September and the weather was unseasonably warm, we were informed. Ok w/me. The main house has a kitchen and a large meeting room where we spent most of our social hours. I was here for an Alumni Board Meeting, as I am a director. The Board meets here once a year. The mess hall/conference center is a few steps down from the Cedars cabin towards the lake. This is where we held our two days of meetings and where we ate breakfast, lunch and dinner. The staff is wonderful and very accommodating. Deb is in charge of the facility where I was staying and could not have been more solicitous. The food was very good. A chef came in from the University and we had something different to eat every day. There was always fresh fruit available and gluten free offerings for those who wanted it. I loved the fact that coffee was brewing each day by 6:15am as I am an early riser. The cabins all had electric so I suppose you could bring along your own coffee if you wanted to. It was delightful waking up to the sunrise and looking out over Raquette Lake with my coffee. I heard from others that the best season is early/late fall. The black flies are tough in June/July. I never saw an insect. I did notice a bite from something after I left on the back of my leg. Sneaky little critter. I can only imagine how it would be in winter. As an Alumni Board Member I got lodging free and the College paid for my meals. A quick look at the rate schedule indicates lodging and meals are extremely reasonable. I used to camp out a lot as a younger person. Now camping out for me is staying at a Holiday Inn. But if you like the outdoors this is a great choice. All in all a very enjoyable experience in a beautiful setting. Highly recommend. If you are an outdoorsy type you would have a tough time doing any better. Mark.
