Highly discouraged! We had a house fire a few years ago and our insurance company recommended these clowns. HUGE MISTAKE! What should have taken a few months to get back into our house, took over a year! Horrible workmanship and when challenged about the workmanship we would receive lies or they would get upset and start yelling at my father. Probably the best thing they did was while our house was under re-construction the power, plumbing, etc was turned off, the workers still decided to use the toilets in the house, and obviously could not flush. Challenged them and they became very upset. So we found their solution a few weeks later. Bags in the woods... Absolutely disgusting and repulsive. The workers also would take down our closet doors to use as temporary work benches, use our grill until it was out of propane, try to cover up shoddy work and sometimes not even show up. All the workers seemed as though they had never been in this line of business before. Oh, did i mention that many items were missing from the home, but we could not prove, but had a very strong idea as the contractor had a key to the home. Lee, the owner is an absolute miserable man. Any question you would have would be returned with a sarcastic answer or a straight out lie. Overall, piss poor workmanship, piss poor customer service and extremely slow workers. I would never recommend these clowns to my worst enemy. I wouldn't be surprised if they were out of business by now STAY AWAY! very obvious that money is more important to these guys than overall project and customer satisfaction. I would like to commend First General for doing a wonderful job on my property restoration. It was a pleasure to work with my property manager, George Teed and everyone at First General. I appreciate the great communication George maintained with me throughout the duration of my project. The work done by the carpenters, painters and floor professionals was done well and to our standards. After all the work was done, George saw to it that the clean up crew did an excellent and thorough job. A few months back, we had a pipe burst in our 2nd floor bathroom, causing damage in the bathroom, the upstairs hall and down in the 1st floor kitchen and dining room. Our insurance company put us in touch with First General Services, and George came out within a day to write us an estimate. He was prompt and very professional, and took the time to explain the process to us in great detail. Since we had never had a claim, we had no idea what to expect. George was always available to answer any questions and always returned phone calls if he wasn't able to talk. The work is finished, and we are delighted to have our house back together! Everything looks great, and the workers were very clean and personable. I can't say enough how pleasant our experience was with not only George, but everyone else we dealt with at their office. Do I really have to give this company a star? I was required by my insurance company to use this group. This was a kitchen repair/remodel from water damage from the floor above. What a nightmare! We were promised a 5 day job from the day the cabinets were complete to the kitchen being complete...and in plenty of time for us to host a graduation party for our two graduates from the Coast Guard Academy.....well, we were 34 DAYS without a working kitchen, we hosted a party for 100 people with nothing in our kitchen but a card table, we lived 4 weeks without a downstairs bathroom (including the party for 100) because during the demo, they turned off the water and FORGOT to turn it back on. The subcontractors were great, but First General's were bad, very bad....could not read directions on how to hang a vent hood...I was promised that after having our original hardwood floors from 1900, they would be covered and protected from construction wear and tear. They weren't, and there are several gouges and scratches in the new finish as a result. .Cost quotes were TERRIBLE- they wanted $1500 to install butcher block counters (because "they have never done it before, and weren't sure how to do it) painting the trim in the kitchen was quoted at $800+,I hired a professional painter who painted the whole kitchen, as well as the bathroom, trim and walls for $250, they quoted $125 to remove louvered doors - I removed them myself and was done in 10 minutes. On the flip side, I was quoted a credit of my account to use my own plumber to re-install the sink, garbage disposal and dishwasher of $70...my challenge to the internet community is to find a plumber that would do all that for 70 bucks! Their project manager was rude and unprofessional. He humiliated me in front of the entire construction crew, and several weeks later, when I stood up to him he stormed out of the house, and roared down the street...thankfully there were no children in the street. I called the company that day, left a message for our rep to call us, and he did not call back for FOUR WEEKS, and only then because I am holding all the checks from the bank. This company is a nightmare. I recommend that if you encounter them, you run the other way. DO NOT let your insurance company force you to use them. They are unskilled and unprofessional....terrible customer service......the only good thing I can say is their cabinet builders do beautiful work....totally unrelated to First General Services of Hartford's skills or service. read more
