I heard the choir practice one day and thought I have to find out why they are so happy. A choir of 250 ppl, alter calls, a 2 hr service. Time went fast I was rocking and rolling, I was part of the experience. Jim Cymbala the passionate Paster his wife Carol the choir director were natural leaders. I had goose bumps from the service. The Holy Spirit experience lasted all wk and if not Tuesday was prayer night. Nothing compared to the songs Carol wrote and my insides were hungry for more of that energy. Time past I became disconnected. Bounced around church's but nothing gave me what they delivered. Missing that " food" I went back after 25 yrs I felt home. We were all older, his daughter in the choir director it's a bit smaller but packs the same punch. Devoted ppl in Gods house. Happiness, Jesus , some talk in tongues, scared me at first, I felt acceptance, like a car wash for the soul. I left feeling fed, shining and new. Till next Sunday it's high test gasoline for the spirit and soul.

There is a true community here. It's a small enough church so that the members know each other really well, and there are many opportunities to connect throughout the week: small groups, Bible studies, service opportunities, and a lot of hanging out. The church owns a small coffee shop that makes an amazing hang out/meet up place during the week. As a New Yorker who lives far from family, there is a level of support here that is indispensable. 2.) Lots of young families. While I do not have kids, it's wonderful to be in a place where there are so many young families supporting one another and sharing the gospel message inter-generationally. The church does a lot to support the kids in the community as well, including free family events, a weekly storytime, Sunday school, parenting support groups, and more. 3.) Sunday services focused on the basics. There is a strong message of God's love of us and our love of others. The sermons focus on the heart of the NT witness each week and are put into action in a community context. This church does a lot to serve the poor and stand with the oppressed, and does not shy away from difficult, relevant issues. There are many activists here. Many, many friendly people who are eager to make new friends and connect. It is not an awkward place to visit for the first time, which made coming here really comfortable in the beginning. 4.) Safe, non-judgmental context to discuss and share. This is a non-denominational evangelical church, but one that is more ecumenical than most. A diversity of Christian thought is represented here, and honest conversations are encouraged.

The congregation fills up the school auditorium where we meet for service and people are from a range of ages and socio-economic groups. There are a LOT of young families. I just graduated from college and moved to the neighborhood finding community was really important to me - I emailed and sought out small group meetings and prayer meetings. I've been able to meet a handful of people from church through that. Even during the 3 minute fellowship time we have during Sunday service, I've gotten to meet people, exchange emails, get advice for my career path, etc! The past few sermons have been really insightful for me and also practically relevant to my life as a young person in new york. I've come to TGC at a kind of time of transition as they are going to offer two service times on Sundays soon. They are also supporting a new church in Crown Heights. Since i wrote about my experiences at St. Augustine, i have been reading other reviews, and realize…read morei was unfair. I was there in 2007 and years before. At first I was enthralled with it all, just like the recent reviewers were. But my reviews are about the St. Augustine church that stood by itself, not joined with another. The St. Augustine's that - to me - was a vibrant, active church on its own. I left and did not keep up with the changes i guess it went through in joining (?) with St. Francis. I TRIED to be an ACTIVE, REGULAR member of ST. AUGUSTINE. First as a choir member, and often sang as soloist for weddings and funerals. I was trained for this since high school at the Brooklyn Conservatory School of Music (3yrs.), and have a degree in music from one of the major music conservatories in Manhattan. Well, so maybe i was too trained. I truly felt i had something i could contribute. That's ok. I understood. So i tried attending the senior group, (maybe 8 members?), and seeing a need, i cooked for them for a while. Full trays of dinners for their lunches (egg plant parm.and the like.). That went well until the Business Manager started sending down family members, and staff to partake. (I am not stingy, ...but ???? how much can one give. ??) My trying to give to the senior group ended when they asked me to lead a Christmas sing-a-long. I supplied the printed words to the songs, but found this wonderfully diverse group unhappy. (too much classical, not enough Spanish, etc) The ONLY group that did not complain were the few from Haiti. I truly loved the people crom Haiti...- these wonderfully SOPHISTICATED, and CULTURED members, who loved the water colors i brought for all, and were delighted i brought copies of standard opera arias at various times. They seemed to be familiar with them, they sang along, wanted to learn and participate. Never, ever complained. I found them gracious, loving, and Christian. I had to leave the senior group, though. Too much dissatisfaction from the other two groups. Over a number of years, i kept wondering if they realized i was just a volunteer? my final and most strenuous effort to give back to the church/religion/institution i was born into was work in the library gift shop upstairs.it had been disorganized, with half opened boxes of shipments of items strewn around. Three lay women would give an hour or two every Sunday to be there. They seemed to want to be there to give "spiritual guidance", or something.. The church said it needed money, i tried to give of myself and gave at least 6 hours a day, 6 days a week to make it a practical, working library and place where people could get rosaries, statues, holy cards every day i would bring the Business Manager an envelope with a little money . often bought things with my own money giving it to the church. After well over a year, of what i felt was a success, the criticism came.Older church goers demanded i buy more expensive items. But these same people never bought anything to contribute. They said they wanted a more high class place. The original three wanted to meet there for tea, and socialize. Befoore they pushed me out, there were people up and down those stairs all the time, buying little things, - candles of their choice of color, and saint, to place before the crucifix downstairs. St augustine picture postcards were actually being sold. Where js all this now. Empty. A museum. !ovely, beautiful church that should have continued to thrive with life. I saw the council, the Business Manager, the comminity look for what they could take. Not what they could give. I LOVE st. Augustune. But i had to walk away. Not only from the parish, but from it all.

Prior to entering the church, all visitors are subject to a mandatory security screening. Everyone is required to empty their pockets and walk through a metal detector. If you brought any size bag, it must be examined on an X-ray conveyor belt. The security protocol is taken very seriously; multiple guards are present during the insertion. The interior has a variety of beautiful sights to admire. A diagonal shaped peppercorn plaque is engraved on the floor beside the security station. It is the very spot where Queen II stood when she visited the church in 1976. In addition to celebrating the country's bi-centennial anniversary, the Queen was collecting back rent that was paid in peppercorns. Located at the nave of the church, the stained glass is very colorful and stands at a whopping 27 feet high and 11 feet wide. The grand piano has more than 88 keys. Everyone may have a seat on any of the cathedral benches to rest, pray or seek a quiet escape from the urban life.   Feel free to light a candle at the votive candle station, which signifies that a prayer to God continues even after exiting the building. The North & South Graveyard are located outside the church. Upon exiting to explore the graveyard, nobody is allowed to return inside unless they go through another security screening.   Historical figures are buried in this graveyard such as Robert Fulton, Alexander Hamilton, and John Watts. Several of the tombstones are several hundred years old, which accounts for their decrepit state.   In addition to tombstones, there are other sights to see. Detailed carvings of biblical figures are sculpted on the Astor Cross. The Soldiers Monument honors the POWs who died during the American Revolution. The Swords Memorial Fountain was a public water system that served as a community water fountain and horse trough during the 1900s. If you wish to receive a more detailed guided tour, scan the QR code on a "Virtual Tour" sidewalk billboard. A few of the billboards are located within the graveyards. Whether or not you are religious, I highly recommend exploring this designated landmark in Lower Manhattan.
