Such a nice and peaceful on Sunday late afternoon. I was on the way to get snack, when I saw this church, I had to stepped in and sit inside for a while. I love the architecture, arts and color glass around the church. I don't want to interrupt another people, so I just sit not to deep and listen to nice and wonderful music. read more

I was walking along the side walk as most people usually do and stumbled up this beautifully built church. I also noticed that they were holding organ meditation at 4pm. When I looked at my phone to catch the time it was exactly 3:55pm. Talk about perfect timing! I've always seen this type of thing in movies but I have never personally done anything like this. Being that I had time to make my way inside without being disrupting with noise and movement. On occasion I like to shut everything off and meditate--not think of anything. It helps when living in an every fast paced world it has a way of slowing things down a bit. It was not super crowded and found a seat right away. There was a thin door to open and lock behind you--then make your way to your seat. This church is beautiful! From the antique furnishings to the mural windows. The inside was just as amazing as the outside was--the architecture makes you feel like you're in a far away land, medieval times even. I didn't stay very long and that was the flow that most people had that came in. They accept any donations of any amount that you may feel so inclined to give. read more

If there is ever a silver lining in 2020, I think it's that this special year taught me to better differentiate things and find out which are actually dispensable and which are absolutely essential. To some gatherings or parties, I finally found the perfect excuse for not showing up. And meanwhile, I found myself missing certain things so dearly, among which, is the "Bach at Noon" for meditation at Grace Church every Wednesday noon at lunch break. This is the perfect way to recharge right in the middle of the week, on a hump day, as I was literally bathing myself in the vast vibes of Bach organ pieces. Bach's work is always a resource of abundance, harmony, and peace. In this way, Grace Church is my shelter and I am so grateful for that! read more

A good portion of the reviews for this church seem to start out the same as mine is going to: i was feeling kinda down, overwhelmed with the city, needing some quiet, meditative space. I wandered by and noticed the garden was open, and the doors to the church itself. I roamed through the garden and then went on inside, and found it was exactly what I needed. Like many New York Jews, I'm an apathetic agnostic. The space wasn't religious to me, it was just a calm, quiet, beautiful historic building. I played on my phone in peace for a bit, then closed my eyes and listened to the organ music. I moved off once it seemed like a service was starting about half an hour later, feeling a bit more sorted. Hard to believe it's so close to the bustle of Union Square but the church and its little counrtyard are a calm oasis Currently partly clad in scaffolding, it's still a beautiful gothic monument with its crowning stained glass windows. Simply a beautiful little church located a couple blocks from Washington Square park and well worth the walk to see it. When I walked inside, the first thing that came to mind was "It reminds me of a miniature St. Patrick's Cathedral"......and then I learned it was designed by the same architect who designed St. Pat's. Done in the Neo-Gothic style: The tall, lacy steeple reaching toward heaven...... An interior with a soaring, majestic space and surprising well lit due to all the ornate stained glass windows. I learned that the Gothic style emphasizes verticality and light, both of which are evident. . I just wanted to stop in for a quick peek, but we met the caretaker who gave us a quick tour. There is plaque near the front of the Church that had a very interesting story: One of the parishoners of Grace church, Edith Corse Evans, was a passenger on the fated Titanic and she selflessly gave up her seat on a lifeboat to another woman named Caroline Brown because Ms. Brown had children. The plaque was presented to the church in 1912. In an adjacent area of the church, we were also shown a magnificent, small chapel that is attached to the main church and is usually closed off to the public. (see the photo I took). He explained that couples can get married in the majestic and grand main church, or in this intimate and equally lovely chapel. So if you are thinking of getting married in this spectacular, gothic monument........the "rental" fee to walk down the aisle is $15,000. Expensive wedding! read more

I'm not especially Christian. Nor am I a good person. And my past reviews with their paragraphs of implied debauchery could each serve as their own first class ticket to Satan's lap. If I believed in any of the Old or New Testament, I would say that after I die, you will find me plopped upon his knee postmortem, stabbing myself with a crucifix. But instead I can tell you that you can find me here, and surprisingly often, and all of this even while I am still very much alive. Shocking? Yes. In New York we all seek sanctuary in places that shield us from the chaos and manic energy and noises that we call home. These places are called 'bars'. But sometimes you need a little more! Like, an actual sanctuary. I make a habit of parking myself in a pew during any given non-Sunday, usually for no more than thirty minutes at a time. When I leave, I feel refreshed. Not for any religious reason, but because I was able to think clearly without my brainwaves being intercepted ten billion times by anything and everything whirling around. It's a huge beautiful space, quiet, clean, free, and almost always empty. I don't know another place in downtown Manhattan where you can find that. What a beautiful church........a true Gothic revival Masterpiece!!!! right in the heart of New York City....located amid the hustle and bustle of Manhattan is this breataking sight.....A GEM OF A PLACE............ I can't help but stop and and just admire the beauty of the architecture...its arches...the spire...the stained glass...mosaics...carvings....I feel like being transported back in time....whenever I go there... something about houses of workship that truly fascinates me...very serene and uplifting...It has a rare blend of historic interest and modern sophistication.... Grace Church reminds me of Ely Cathedral in Ely, England....a smaller version of it and St. Paul's Church in London where Prince Charles wed his Camilla...It is also a part of the Epicopal Church which is the American branch of the Church of England....a church that grew out of the 16th century reformation. A Historic Landmark on Broadway near 10th St...it is perfect for worship,music, wedding and inspirational sermons......The cornerstone was laid in 1843 and consecrated in 1846...Designed by James Renwick Jr, nephew of Henry Brevoort, who sold them the land, who also later designed the famous St, Patricks' Cathedral...it was said that workers who cut the stone came from the state prison Sing Sing.... A true Masterpiece...It is truly worth a visit..... read more

I visited this beautiful church for their free Bach organ concert at noon, which is actually from 12:20-12:50 Tuesdays through Fridays. I highly recommend it, but please note that there are no public restrooms here. You can use the restroom at the nearby Strand bookstore. Also, please be respectful of the posted rules and regulations, such as no photography or videotaping during the organ concert. You can take photos before and after, but the concert is supposed to be a time for quiet reflection and contemplation. During my visit, a tourist couple from hell took photos and video with their phones (complete with camera clicking sound) throughout the church during the performance, which was extremely distracting. The woman was even taking selfies. Who takes selfies in a church?! Despite this distraction, the organist was highly skilled and I enjoyed the performance. read more

This sounds horrible, but if you're looking for a nice pit stop while doing your weekend shopping up and down Broadway, this is the place to go. The Gothic beauty is breathtaking, has been around since 1846 and is a gem on a street filled with loud neon shoppers. Upon stepping in you are greeted with a breath of fresh air when the city noise is hushed and the light from the stained glass kisses you face. This was actually the first church that James Renwick, Jr designed. (After designing Grace Church he went onto to do St. Patrick's Cathedral.) The Municipal Arts Society is currently preserving it at all costs so this NYC landmark will be around for quite some time. They are taking donations, so please drop what you can to help! read more

A non religious person giving a church 5 stars? You betcha, especially when that church does Christmas Eve service so well. I was in a jubilant singing mood, and having only caught the last half hour of caroling in Washington Square, I was determined to exercise my vocals cords with more merry songs. The Nine Lessons and carols caught my eye; carols sung by a choir and carols to sing along. Not obscure ones that put me to sleep one year I attended midnight mass at another church. But more common ones I knew the tunes for, albeit religious. It is Christmas, the birth of Christ, you know, and celebrated in this lovely gothic church. The altar was decorated with such a profusion of red poinsettias I couldn't help be cheerier. The girls choir sounded angelic and the entire service was professionally done, way down to the programs with the words to the sing a long carols. All right, they didn't do my Frosty the Snowman but it was such a beautiful service and way more entertaining than spending eve with grumpy sis. I might even have had a lump in my throat during Silent Night. Even the sermon from the priest was relatable. I did notice a few humbugs who left right before the collection plate. It's Christmas eve, fellow Yelpers. Toss in a few bucks or more, even if you do have to hurry along. They did say it was for the less fortunate and not the church. Karma marries well with holy nights. Like Frosty, I will be back next year! read more

after checking the churche's website stating that dec 7 carols by choir at 4 pm we decided to make the effort on a very cold to visit it first tim ever.once arrived we were told that only those with tickets could attend.alternatively they informed us that they had some left for $30 that we could still buy.we told them that they should clearly state that on their website.we left and will never be returning back to this place.those in church of the church along with the priests should be told that those little tricks of the trade doen not do great justice for their establishment nor for their faith. read more
