At some point I decided that Marwen must be the corporate headquarters of some outdoorsy clothing brand because the name reminded me of Erehwon, the mountain outfitter. Well, mountain outfitter it's not; this is what Marwen is all about (from their website): "Marwen was founded to provide Chicago's youth with stimulating and diverse opportunities to channel their adolescent energy into personally rewarding and developmentally appropriate outlets. Chicago is a city rich in history, architecture, art, and culture, and it is Marwen's intent to leverage these resources, providing our students with an out-of-school program that provides access to opportunity, while remaining highly relevant to their individual and collective experiences." The fabulous Kelly S told me about "Show Me Marwen" which gave me a chance to check the place out, for free to boot! The event was really cool, but a little crowded. I liked that they asked attendees to not only wear name tags, but add color-coded stickers to show how they were affiliated with Marwen (student, alumni, parent, friend, etc.), it really gave it a community feel. The alumni and student artwork on display was amazing and ranged from photographs to paintings to pottery to claymation videos. I was in awe of all of the creativity in the room. The only downside was that when I left Marwen I felt about as creative as a cucumber.

First, I live a busy lifestyle and didn't have 7 consecutive weeks available for me to dedicate. Secondly, the content in these 1-day classes was taught in a way that made some points of learning photography even more confusing. Therefore, I continued my search and stumbled upon Parrish, who was willing to offer private photography classes. Parrish connected with me prior to my session to better understand my skill level, what I was hoping to gain from the class and the type of camera I own. This allowed him to prepare accordingly for our session to ensure it was a success. I was impressed with his technical knowledge yet more impressed with his ability to tailor his message in a non-technical way to ensure I was gaining knowledge. He is a very charismatic person, which made it even more engaging to learn and ask questions along the way. I ended the session feeling more excited about taking photos, gained much greater knowledge on photography, and learned how to better use my camera for taking great photos. Parrish additionally offered to critique my photos after the session to further enhance my knowledge.

You can tell that photography is something that she is genuinely passionate about, and it certainly shows in her photos. Like most people, I underestimated how much work photography entails....until I took a photography class myself. There are so many different aspects involved with capturing the perfect picture - from the lighting in the room, to the shutter speed, to the aperture value settings used, and many other countless variables. It literally is a science, and there is so much more to it than meets the eye. However, Dana really is a master of all these skill sets, and she has a great eye for detail to capture the perfect moment. In addition to her photography skills, she truly is a pleasure to work with, and has great communication skills when working with her clients. No matter how shy of a person you are (like me), you will find yourself warming up to Dana in just a matter of minutes. She is also very professional in dealing with all of her clients; you can expect cordial responses and prompt email replies when working with her. I would highly recommend Dana Ann Photography to anyone and everyone without hesitation. *She also took my Yelp profile picture above (on a day that I was tired and having a bad hair day) and it came out wonderfully. I wish I could give an extra star on this review because she always goes above and beyond.

From the ever so important wedding time line, to calling my ceremony space to see if we could arrive early, driving my husband and I to our reception, and answering all my father's questions about her camera, Dana was truly amazing to work with and she truly went above and beyond what I thought a photographer would do. Even after the wedding she was responsive to emails within minutes (even when she was out of the country) and kept us up to date on when our photos would be ready and worked with us to create a payment plan that best worked for my husband and I. Words cannot even express how happy I am with all of our photos and the fast time she was able to get them back to us. Each time I look at them (and there are SO, SO many) I'm immediately taken back to my wedding day and the images are overall breathtaking, I seriously cannot even think of the words to describe them. Overall Dana's talents are truly endless, raw and amazing. Not to mention she is an incredible person to work with, easy going, friendly and overall her gorgeous pictures really speak for themselves.

The Academy is not like other art schools. If you're looking for a school where you can slack off,…read moreparty on the weekends, and have a good time learning "art", this is not the school for you. The Academy takes art seriously as a career, and expects you to as well. As a result, they have a really harsh attendance policy, the teachers are strict on turning in your projects on time, and there is a LOT expected of you. Additionally, this is not the school for those looking to go into modern art or "learn how to express themselves" as the Academy assumes you already know how to express yourself and is there to teach you how to draw. That being said, if you actually want to be successful as an illustrator/graphic designer/fine artist (sadly their 3d and web design departments seemed pretty lacking), you WILL improve by going to this school because they will force you to. I was an illustration major, and it was really amazing to see how some of my friends went from not being able to draw anything to having their own unique style. The school is small, but it's really nice because you get way more one on one time with your professors than you would if you went to a university. And for something like art, it's really nice to have your professor come up behind you and tell you you're drawing the head too big before you've already committed to having a ridiculous sized head on your piece. And as one of the other reviewers pointed out, you won't get into your major until your second year. This is because they want to ensure your fundamentals of art--which apply to every field of art--are strong. Just like how a normal college forces you to take GenEds before going into your major. TL;DR The Academy is a tough school. Most people can't hack it expecting something similar to the Art Institute's hands off approach. This is not that. You will work hard, learn, and become a better artist because of it.

Making reservations for holiday travel can be tricky, but Margarita was very helpful in planning the trip, booking all the activities from our wish list. We made our own housing and flight arrangements (something Vega can do for you) but Vega researched and booked everything else for us - we got English speaking private tour guides and drivers between our accommodations (we stayed in 4 different places during the 11 days) and points of interest. Working with Vega was very easy - after initial phone conversation, everything else was discussed over e-mail. Their response time was under 24 hours (and sometimes within minutes). Prior to our trip, Vega provided us with an app that included all the travel arrangements and phone numbers in one place. During the trip, while we worked with different guides, there was a local contact for the entire trip, and when we did have a couple of small glitches, we had someone to contact who quickly responded (even on Christmas Day!) and resolved our concerns. After the trip, Margarita followed up to see how our trip went. I will definitely work with Vega again in the future.
