Once you clear security, don't make the mistake of spending so much time shopping at DFS stores. You still need to pass through passport control and the queue can be lengthy at times. Today was my first (and probably last time, at least for a while) time flying through Lugano's tiny…read moreairport. I imagine that more of the service is geared towards private flying (particularly based on the number of private jets I saw vs. the 4 daily scheduled flights, all to Zurich), but as such, it makes transiting through here a cinch. We were heading out on the first flight (a 7:30 AM departure), but even arriving ~70 minutes prior to departure was frankly too early. There's a small parking lot to the right where we dropped off our rental car (followed by subsequently dropping off the keys in a keybox), and inside the terminal, pre-security, is a ticket area on the right, which is easy to mistake for the check-in area (which is further in to the left). Since only SWISS flies here, you have 2 lines - one for business, one for economy. It took us less than 5 minutes to get checked in all the way back to the U.S., as well as having our bags checked all the way as well. Security screening is quick and easy - just make sure to take out liquids and laptops/tablets - and then there is a small seating area that has a small duty-free shop and a cafe. There's (literally) nothing else post-security (I'm not even sure that bathrooms are available airside), hence the advice for not showing up that early. When you board, you simply walk out onto the tarmac and up on the plane. If you're lucky to have a southbound takeoff, you will circle around and back north, affording you beautiful views of the area around Lugano, as well as views of the Swiss Alps further west, if the weather cooperates. I imagine that Lugano often gets overlooked because it isn't all that far away from a much larger airport (Milan's Malpensa airport) - but I intentionally picked it because I figured that it would be much less of a hassle to start our trip back to the U.S., even if it meant an extra stop via Zurich (which I like as an airport anyways) - and it worked out just as I thought. The only risk is that, given the dearth of flights, you could be in a little trouble making onwards connections if there are any scheduling issues. That said, our experience worked like a charm. If you are either visiting Lugano or the surrounding area - or are traveling elsewhere and can fly direct to your destination via Zurich - I would definitely recommend looking into LUG as a convenient, low-stress point to begin or end your journey.

Note, if…read moreyou are purchasing the train ticket to go to Terminal 2 and not 1, the train still stops at Terminal 1. We made the mistake of getting off one stop early at Terminal 1 and had to wait 15-20 min for the free shuttle to take us to Terminal 2 for our Easyjet flight. When the shuttle arrived at Terminal 2, we figured the entrance for departures was where the shuttle stopped in front of... it had stopped in front of the train station area. We went outside and turned right to get to the departures entrance. Staff was not very helpful nor were the signs. Cannot rely on anything or anyone to help direct you in this terminal. As usual, with European airports, once you go through TSA, you are forced to walk through their Duty-free maze in order to get to your gate.

The restrooms were well-stocked and clean. The only think I would have liked is if there were outlets in baggage claim for charging up devices that have died, while waiting for your bags. Once you're through customs, there is a waiting area where I could charge my phone while we waited for the bus- if you're planning to take the bus, it might be a good idea to download the Arriva app ahead of time. The ticket machines where working, and the app needed to text me a code, so this could be an issue if you don't have cellular service.
Spacious terminal with low traffic
This is an interesting little airport that is more convenient to certain regions of Switzerland…read morethan the airports in Zurich or Geneva. This facility serviced around 271,000 passengers in 2014 making it the fourth busiest in Switzerland. The traffic level was just over 1% of the level experienced by Zurich airport, the busiest in the country, the same year. When I recently used this airport, I had business in Visp and this was quite a bit closer compared to the larger options. I like smaller airports as they are much easier to navigate than their larger counterparts. This is one of the smallest I have used. There is not much to the facility as there are only a couple of airlines that are present. The waiting areas are small as is the bag claim. There is a limited eatery at the far end of the building that is convenient for a coffee or a light bite. As an originating airport, the approach and access are facile. The drop off area is small but adequate which can also be said of the parking. The check-in and security areas are user-friendly. As a terminating airport, the same advantages of a small airport come into play. The bag claim area functions well and the curbside pickup is easy to navigate. There is also a bus that takes passengers to and from Bern Train Station. The disadvantages of small airports often times come into play, however. In the big picture, airports such as these do not have frequent flights and are very limited on the number of destinations. But there are more specific issues as well. On my arrival from Munich, I needed a carnet stamped for a piece of equipment I was carrying. Getting the carnet stamped was the reason I flew instead of taking a train or driving. Unfortunately, the Customs people, who were supposed to be there until 9 PM (it was about 7:15 PM when I arrived), were arbitrarily gone for the day putting me in a bit of a dilemma. Overall, this airport has advantages in some situations. The best aspects are that it is very user-friendly and easy to navigate. The location is also good for many destinations in Switzerland. The downside is the limited services available. However, if the situation presents itself as favorable, I would certainly consider using this airport again.
