The organization was poor. Clearing passport control was chaotic. They had four lines, but only two people were reviewing documents (very slowly), and the way they decided which line was next seemed random--several people who arrived after us were allowed to go ahead. The airport isn't attractive and feels dirty. The only lounge was before security, which makes no sense. Our plane departed late because some people got stuck at security. This is a nice airport considering that it is on the smaller size that receives international flights. There are enough food and drink options that anyone can find something to get to their satisfaction. There is also a large enough duty free shop that has your classic goods (alcohol, beauty products, souvenirs, etc). The lines for security pass quite nicely too! I was pleasantly surprised by how efficient everything was. The one grip I have is that the gates are all over the place. My gate was located completely opposite to where it should have been on the ground level with security being on the second floor. It was confusing and before a flight there is enough chaos that needing to run around an airport can be added stress. read more

Palermo's airport is regional sized. Yes, it's international and they do customs and immigration here because there are flights from non-Schengen countries. I connected to here from Rome so none of that was needed today. Jetbridge service both arriving and departing which is noteworthy as it is not always the thing in Europe. My friend's checked bags arrived swiftly and we were on our way. Arrival and departure on Alitalia from and to Rome were on time. There are a number of options for travel from the airport to the city center. I recommend the shared taxi. €7 each and it drops off at the same places that the bus drops. The bus is also an option for €6 if your schedule allows. There is wifi in the airport and there are food options in the airport, both landside and airside. Car rental in the terminal area as well. Small but easy to use. And I love the fact that there is a train that leaves every 30 minutes that takes you into downtown quite cheaply. Downside is there are not a lot of direct flights from outside of Italy. Should you dare miss your flight (like we did) that might delay you for a day. read more

This airport needs a refresh in the worst way. While I realize that it is a smaller, regional airport, it was dirty and the bathrooms were vile. No toilet paper, overflowing toilets and waste baskets, and it looked they hadn't been in days. The bathrooms were also very small and there weren't many of them. Baggage took a while but staff was polite. It didn't take long to get through security. read more

This airport, PMO (Palermo International), doesn't seem to get good ratings on here. I will say that, in many ways, PMO is easier to use than CTA (Catania International), the other big airport on the island of Sicily. Strangely enough, for serving the Sicilian capital and with Palermo having twice the population of Catania, PMO doesn't have the passenger traffic of Catania. Perhaps that's because CTA serves the Ionian coast, all the way from Messina down to the southeastern corner of the island, and is closer to the focal points of tourism on the island. Even though it's farther from the city center, using PMO seems easier. (There's no train into CTA - yet - and there's no dedicated motor coach from the city that I know of, so it's more of a hassle to get into closer-in CTA using public transit.) First, one can get there in somewhat stress-free ways There is a FS national train going into the air station. However, the train ride takes about 40 minutes from Palermo Centrale. If not opting for the train and especially if boarding a very early flight, there's professionally run Prestia and Comande,' a motor coach company with a few key stops in Palermo that will take you there for a little more than a five spot of euro. PMO sits on its own land mass at Punta Raisi, with large hills and rock outcroppings jutting up behind it and the Mediterranean on the other side of the access road. People say that PMO is stuck in the '70s. It probably is. It has that look. However, it seemed big enough to handle what I saw in terms of people and planes. Check-in was a breeze, with counters for flights clearly indicated on the monitors, and security controls went quickly. Personnel for both functions were cordial and expedient. Once "admitted" to the gate area, there were some decent food options, where the employees were friendly enough, and boarding Alitalia, the national flag carrier, took place using a jetway, which should be a standard occurrence for the principal airline. The circulation areas and two main levels breathe well enough ... for what most people need. PMO is called other things: the airport, Punta Raisi, and occasionally Falcone and Borsellino. The latter is the official name. It is named for two magistrates who, in 1992, paid with their lives as they paved the way for the subsequent upward momentum to loosen the mafia's grip over Palermo and surrounding areas in Western Sicily. In those years, the atmosphere could be tense while, more recently, people are walking around doing the evening "passeggiata" with friends and family and enjoying food and libations. And tourists from near and far are doing the same. Now, together with a cleaner and more relaxed Palermo is an airport that gives much the same vibe - clean and relaxed. read more

Dirty run down airport, flashback late 70's early 80's decor. Only 1 ATM in the entire airport and of course it's out of order. They did have a charging station for your phone which was surprising since cellphones were not yet invented in 1980. The AMEX girls were nice to look at so it wasn't a totally bad experience. It appears that the second floor may have been recently renovated and does have a decent looking restaurant, clothing store, bakery, Made in Sicily store and coffee shop. One somewhat nice feature if you have time to kill is the outside area on the second floor. You get a view of the sea and partial view of a mountain. Baggage area is a disaster. Only 2 carousels but there is a secret room in the back where they x-ray your luggage. Nobody tells you this, you have to ask the guy at the big "lost luggage" room. They do have working bathrooms which is surprising. read more

Getting through security is a breeze. And the airport itself isn't big so it's easy to access your gate. Major cons: one or two dining options -- and the lines are long. You're better off finding a snack in the duty free shop. It can be chaos with so many gate changes, late boarding... Arrive with your ticket printed or accessed on your smartphone. read more

Not the best airport I've been in. Certainly not the worst. But, it could be a LOT better. Note that you have to drive a long way from the Palermo city centre to get to this airport. It can be inconvenient especially if you leave on the "later" side. Speaking of which, I'd get here 2 or more hours early. When I came here (I was flying ITA Airways to Rome Fiumicino), I had arrived about an hour and a half early with a large group. I had barely made it to the gate just before boarding began due to how slow check in and security was. Avoid the stress by simply showing up early! This airport is on the small side though, which is nice - no long walks needed in this terminal but it is quite dirty. I was also not very impressed with the washrooms. They too were filthy and had long lines due to how small they were. Bigger washrooms (and more of them) would sure be nice, along with cleanliness! I did like though how this airport has jetway services. That does not seem to be a thing in Europe as much as it is in North America. I'll go ahead and put this airport in the "meh" category. A very small airport. Once you pass security there is not much inside so I suggest you get your food before security or enjoy the little balcony area with amazing views. Wow this airport has the best views of any airport with open concept! terrible airport. check in line was atrocious And then we got to the check in desk and we stood there for 25mins waiting for them to check us in. Then we got bag tags and 5 mins later they tore them off and had to start all over. Not to mention that the lady took my vaccine card and didn't give it back to me and then when i went back to get it she had left somewhere and took it with her. There is no order at all. You stand in a line for an hour to get on the plane with no seats there is no order people go in on you just line up. Also the bathrooms are terrible And smell so disgusting. to get through security you have to walk through a dense shopping area. no food options. I loved this airport: my expectations were low, given it's the poorer part of Italy, but oh my was I ever pleasantly surprised. Firstly, after landing, we did not have to get onto a bus on the tarmac. We breezed directly from the airplane into the actual airport itself. This is a luxury, folks, because Frankfurt, Dubrovnik, Rome ... so many airports these days, do not have this convenience. It's a completely manageable and compact airport, everything felt able to navigate. The security was surprisingly more strict than Rome, e.g. asking my husband to take out things out of his backpack they wanted to look at closely--but that's they're job. This is the farthest airport from Heathrow or Frankfurt or Chicago--it's not what you might call a "major hub," and hallelujah for that. If you have a chance to fly in or out of Palermo, I'd do it. read more

Great air port. It has underground train station, which makes arrival at air port super handy and hustle free. It has a nice balcony just before scans. Beautiful sunsets. Don't try pizza quarter (beside that balcony area). Pizza is crap, like a sponge. Place is quite small, so no trouble getting around. Once you pass boarding gates (scanners), there's nothing much left to buy after that. One shop that has some alcohol and few souvenirs in the shape of a drink or some olive oil. Due to lack of more shops and bars and restaurants or snack bars, I'm deducting one star. read more

Worst airport I've been to my entire life of traveling. Our luggage was lost and located, and just sat at the Palermo airport. No one notified us it was found. We called the airport over 20 times each day with no one answering the lost and found phone. When we called the other phone, they told us to call lost and found. Over 3 days and still no one has contacted us to return our luggage. We've had to buy new clothes, toiletries, etc etc etc and waste al our money. They totally ruined our entire vacation. Hmm, I hope one doesn't come to Sicily because they are hoping for well-organized infrastructure bliss - if so what are you on?! There are far better places for that. I kinda like the rundown, small, rough-around-the-edges feel of this airport because that's kinda how Sicily is in general...down to earth, always an adventure getting around, but amazing views, people and FOOD. I flew in here in April 2016, June 2016 and August 2016 (kinda fell in love with Sicily, it's people and it's cuisine), and the first two times it was under major construction and there was nada once you exit baggage claim. I was pleasantly surprised in August that the construction was finished and it is much nicer, brighter and more welcoming. If you're not checking a bag, I find this a pretty painless airport - they have a great regular bus to and from Palermo city center (when you exit baggage claim and go outside, turn immediately right and walk .25 mile and you'll see the city bus for 6.30 euros and they leave every half hour, only 35 minutes to Teatro Politeama. On the way you'll get offers for shared taxis for 7 euros. Small size of this place makes it a quick in and out, as you will obviously want to spend all your precious time in beautiful, wild, rough around the edges Sicily! read more
