I find that it has a fascinating collection of all manner of radios as well as TVs and assorted broadcast equipment. The museum has made a heroic effort to preserve the early days of electronic media and to me it serves as a reminder that what's new is old. Hours are somewhat limited (see Pavek online for current info). The price of admission is quite reasonable in my opinion. Unfortunately the Pavek is relatively obscure and not at all well known (at least locally). I suppose that makes the place a "hidden gem." I personally think it deserves much greater recognition. My husband and I were…read morespending the day in Stillwater, and had just finished a very poorly narrated tour of the historic courthouse, when we decided to wander over to the tiny Warden's House Museum. The gentleman who met us out front sold us our tickets ($5 each), and then proceeded to take us through the whole house. It's honestly mostly a mishmash of random items people in Washington County have donated over the years (he mentioned that they are no longer accepting donations of antique pianos because at this point every ground floor room in the house has one). The real jewel here was our tour guide. He was very well versed in all aspects of early Minnesota history, from the rise and fall of the logging industry, to the process of bringing electricity to Stillwater, to the old county jail whose remnants the museum is next to. It was clear the he wasn't just regurgitating some lines he had memorized: he answered all our questions thoroughly and thoughtfully, and clearly was an avid history buff. I highly recommend visiting this little gem.

You won't find this listed very easily on the MN. museums list as it's a private collection and showings are by appointment only. I took a chance and sent an email to Rob Andres; Operations Manager of the collection. He responded right away and was lucky enough to get a time slot. The majority of the huge collection are genuine hand carved beautiful cuckoo clocks dating back decades that were from Germany and made with wood from the Black Foredt. Some have been restored and repaired to bring them back to their glory. They feature many different motifs of animals, instruments and fauna (leaves). The woodwork on these clocks is ornate and extraordinary! The delicate intricate wood work on the cuckoo's is really neat to see. Rob gave a private tour where there were soo many additional non clock items in the collection that were historic and fascinating in nature. There were many exhibits and well worthwhile seeing. Many items brought back memories of time past. It was both fun and enjoyable seeing all the variety of cuckoo clocks in working order. This is truly a one of a kind museum collection. I'm so glad I had the privilege of going here. Rob shares some really unique stories behind the pieces and you'll not see anything like this amazing collection at a museum stateside. The event I signed up for is called Tots and Trains is geared for ages two to five. It includes full access to the museum (but not actual train rides), Story Time readings, a small snack, and crafts ($11 for adults, $6 for ages 3 to 6). The normal adult admission is $16.05. I would say there are two audiences for this museum. If you have a small child and are looking for a 2 hours or so of entertainment, your toddler will have a blast playing with all of the levers and buttons on the actual trains, as well as watching the model railroad, the various play areas, and the built-in story time and snack. My toddler had a blast. The second very different audience would be older teen through adults who are train buffs. They are at least half a dozen (or more) actual train engines inside the museum and volunteers who are happy to give you as much detail as you could possibly want. If you are model railroad person, this is also a good place to check out their very large exhibit. I'm glad this part of history has been preserved by this museum and the hard-working volunteers.

Had to say thank you four times and escape to the bathroom to get out of a couple lectures we didn't ask for. Love the enthusiasm but wanted to just look at stuff ourselves after 5 minutes. We're more readers and enjoyed the plaques and write ups discovering info ourselves. Interesting for kids a bit older but saw lots of toddlers exploring. Interesting for a couple hours. Some awkward stairs into some of the outdoor exhibits that could be difficult.

From big names like Paul Manship (he did the Prometheus in front of the Rockefeller Center) and Grant Wood, to local artists like George Morrison, to new Hmong artists who are eager to make their works seen, this museum has a great collection and the juxtaposition of their works present a scene none less amazing than the American culture today!
