I looked forward to being around people who enjoyed teaching English, and meeting students from all around the world. If I ever came across a family member or friend who needed English support, I would definitely send them here as well. From a volunteer perspective, the Center provides so much support and training for its teachers (who do not need to be professional teachers, so this helps), including a ready-made curriculum and textbooks. Though I've been an ESL tutor in the past, having this institutional support was important for me as I wanted to be well-prepared for my students. The teaching set-up also requires each class to be taught by two teachers, which is very helpful! The students come from all around the world and have many different reasons for being in the program. I loved laughing with them, learning from them (as well as my co-teachers!!), and even learning a few things about the English language myself.

There's even a lobby for volunteers with cold water, places to sit, and more. The second part is a cafe that's open every day that sells coffee drinks, food, and snacks. I ordered the chai latte with an espresso shot and it was strong and tasty. They also sell sandwiches, lunch deals, Just Tea, and more. There's plenty of seating inside and a few seats outdoors along the sidewalk.

Our Essential Study Skills course teaches critical skills -- such as time management, organization, note-taking, and test prep -- that are required, but not fully taught in schools. Our Homework Center is a place where students come to plan and complete work, and is supported by subject-matter experts across all subject areas. Our 1:1 coaching helps to support students on a weekly basis with organizing work, breaking down ("chunking") longer-term assignments, assessing what may have gone wrong on tests, providing strategies for managing time and materials and creating a weekly work "plan". We work with students on organizing and studying for all tests and have special workshops to support mid-terms and finals. We also hold a highly-attended (free) "Lunch and Learn" series for parents where local experts speak on topics such as fostering motivation and helping students push through frustration.
