She arrived around 6pm and was met in the hall by the nurse who told her that the bathroom light did not work but that they were working on it. That was the only interaction she had until an hour later when she called me to say that she needed to go to the bathroom and had not been given a call light. I called the facility while on my way there and only then was someone sent to her room to help her. Upon my arrival the nurse's only response to my question as to why no one had been into the room to do a basic patient check in was "I don't know I'm new" . I asked him if they put him on the floor with no training by himself and his response was "well I went through orientation". After meeting the CNAs working that night I decided to give them the bennifit of the doubt because he was new and the CNA staff does most of the patient care. I arrived the next morning with my sister in law and after speaking to mom found out that in the night she had found bugs crawling on her. Also as we stood there next to the air conditioner we happened to notice a used diabetes testing strip sitting in the vent. When questioned staff insisted that it was unused but as almost half of our immidiate family is diabetic we all know what used strips look like. The administration staff was nasty and evasive when questioned and we had her transferred out that day. My mother is a diabetic and it took my sister in law calling again before they even checked her sugar around 2:30pm (right before she was transferred). The care my mother-in-law received was sub standard at best and neglectful at worst.

I also wanted to mention Oscar who kept me laughing every time I saw him! You really have some fabulous employees and I wanted to share my gratitude!!! There were 2 other patients also waiting. The other patients were called in. At 12:25 PM, I noted that it appeared that everyone was leaving for lunch. I waited another 5 minutes and knocked on the lab door. No one answered. About 2 minutes later a heavy set woman (technician I think) appeared and told me that I would have to come back later. I'm not certain what is happening at the labs there, but something is wrong. I went to another appoint and returned at 2:30 PM and they drew my blood labs. I have noticed that in the last 6 months that the service (other than the doctors), was not what it should be. I found out that MUSC has a "C" rating from the Leap Frog Group (a national nonprofit watchdog). They stated "Charleston (University Medical Center): Earned a "C" grade, frequently penalized for issues like C. diff infections and certain post-surgery complications." Roper has an "A".

There was no communication if my meds had been changed. I was there post-surgery and needed pain meds. Late afternoon one day they weren't brought as scheduled - I buzzed TWICE with no response. Got in my wheelchair, went to the front desk where TWO nurses were working. I told them what happened. Their response? We're busy doing a report! We'll get to you when we're done. I said "I'm in pain and you're doing a report?" The answer - " We said we'll be there when we're done". At least one employee shared with me that the care was sub-standard, especially when compared to a hospital. Don't get me wrong - the Therapists (OT, PT, etc) were all good at their jobs.

I haven't often encountered that kind of treatment in my experience. Sometimes it may be necessary to call back if you aren't able to reach someone on the first try but typically you can get through and speak to someone for appointments or prescription refills by leaving a message.

I had a very concerning experience at East Cooper Medical Center in Mount Pleasant involving a…read morenurse who identified herself as Wendy. My cousin, a Puerto Rican American, came to the ER with severe abdominal/side/back pain and was visibly crying and in significant distress. She called me earlier that evening crying and asking for help. When I arrived at approximately 11:00 PM, I personally observed that she was still in severe pain and distress. What concerns me most is that it was not until after I arrived, spoke with the nursing staff, and requested that another nurse assist my cousin that she received medication from a different nurse. After that nurse, Nicki, administered the medication, I personally watched my cousin finally begin to get relief. She was able to sit up, talk to me, and most importantly, she was no longer crying and visibly suffering from the severe pain she had been experiencing. That made the earlier lack of relief especially concerning to me. I had also requested that Wendy no longer care for my cousin because my cousin had become uncomfortable with the way she was being treated. Despite that request, Wendy returned to the room. My cousin was asking reasonable questions about how long she would have to wait for her ultrasound. She was already extremely anxious and began visibly shaking. Instead of helping calm the situation, Wendy told her to "stop acting like a child and start acting like an adult." I found that completely inappropriate toward a patient who was already experiencing severe pain and distress. I was also concerned that medication was brought into the room without a clear explanation of what it was before my cousin took it. I believe patients should be clearly informed about medications they are being given. Eventually, another nurse came into the room and treated my cousin with kindness and professionalism. That nurse even apologized for what had happened earlier. The contrast between the two interactions was significant. To be clear, my concern is not simply that the ER could not immediately determine the cause of my cousin's pain. We understand that emergency medicine involves testing and uncertainty. My concern is how my cousin was treated while she was seeking care and particularly the fact that she remained in severe distress until after I intervened and another nurse provided medication, after which I personally witnessed a significant improvement in her condition. We are still waiting to submit a formal complaint to ask the hospital to review the entire encounter, including the medication administration record, nursing documentation, and staff conduct. If you visit this ER, advocate for yourself, ask questions about medications before taking them, and bring someone you trust with you if possible. Patients deserve to be treated with dignity, compassion, and respect when they are at their most vulnerable.
