The staff are wonderful However, what is the deal with visitor access? The front is marked to be closed 9pm - 6am but it closes at 6pm. At that point you have to enter and exit the hospital via the ER door. Really inconvenient when bringing elderly people to visit folks. read more

So let me preface this review by saying that I work at the sister facility out in Mt. Pleasant. I'm downtown in the 7th floor with my son who had emergency abdominal surgery Sunday night. He's much better. So the 7th floor.. also known as Buxton is great. All the staff are super nice attentive and knowledgeable in their respective fields. It's busy here but again the staff make time for us. It's quiet here,very few loud obnoxious bells ringing or overhead announcements. The room is on one of the corners overlooking the water and highway to Folly. What a beautiful view with a massive corner window..And the room itself is very spacious and clean. That alone helps to relieve the misery of sickness. Most of the rooms in this floor have amazing views. If you are unfortunately sick, this floor is not a bad spot to be on. read more

After stating that I would never bring my mother back here I am back and still having the same issue as last year. zero communication from staff, nurses are either undermanned or just absent. but they don't communicate either. When they do you see they are in such a hurry that it's always I'll be right back. Then it's almost a threat when you want to leave cause they tell you if you go elsewhere your mother will have to take all the test and go through everything all over. so it's either take the lack of service you get here or make your parent go through all of the poking and prodding and running of test all over. just a sad situation. read more

This place is tragic!! Maybe I feel this way because I come from a city with standards and folks here are used to this. I brought a patient here. Her symptoms were incredibly severe as far as level of pain and possible causes. This place has no water for people waiting in ER room. They refuse to give pain meds to patients waiting despite the fact that wait times here are around 6 hours due to having no rooms available. It's a Thursday at 7pm and all rooms are full? There is something wrong with that picture. People come here sick and in agony and are expected to remain awake for 6 hours waiting for their name to be called. God forbid they fall asleep because they WILL be forgotten about. I wonder how many people have died in this ER awaiting a doctor, let alone a room, a diagnosis and treatment? I have not been a patient here but one of my family members is frequently resident of the hospital. I am very pleased with their service and attentiveness despite it being a very busy hospital. The rooms and building are all well taken care of and clean. In addition, there are plenty of hand sanitize locations throughout to keep yourself free of any potential germs. read more

Not sure what happened however I can say I'd rather deal with a disgruntled postal worker. After waiting 2 hours AFTER the appointment time, they were rude - followed by eye rolls and attitude. I was at Roper Hospital downtown (their West of the Ashley location is known as Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital) to visit a church member in the oncology floor (the 5th floor) so I cannot attest much to the use of the medical portions of the facility, although it is a go-to hospital for strokes and heart attacks (neither of which I have had, thanks be to God). It is a clean and fresh hospital, but the information desk is closed on a Sunday afternoon when my wife and I went there to visit. I did not know of their oncology treatment floor, but my church friend (on his third cancer treatment) speaks highly of it, and that is a gold star in Roper's crown. read more

Unfortunately, I have had reasons to visit this facility that I would rather prevent/avoid. My family go here as their primary hospital for inpatient and emergency room care. My most recent visit was to see my grandmother who went through the ER up to the Med/Surg unit. I noticed on my walk up that many things had changed, even from the outside. Up on the floor, the rooms and hallways have all had a make-over. All inpatient rooms are now private. Huge improvement! There is plenty of parking for family members and they offer discounted rates for continued stays. Ask for the current options if this applies to you. read more

Roper has accreditation issues with JCAHO and lawsuits from patients that I was unaware of before I sought treatment at Roper. I had a serious emergency which was excruciating and painful. My situation required admission and surgery. I was actively vomiting in the wait room and got little relief once seen 90 minutes later. I am drug tested at work regularly and I am not an addict or pill seeker and was seeking intravenous medications to help with excruciating pain and vomiting while I was at the hospital, not even asking for RX at home. I understand there are those that abuse opioids but I am not one and there is a difference in receiving intravenous medications to help with a verified and painful medical diagnosis while one is at the hospital and awaiting surgery. I don't want anyone to face what I have and i would never have gone to Roper ER or hospital for professional treatment. I have serious concerns about infection control at Roper that I observed with gloves, patient care and cleanliness. I regret having surgery here as my insurance allows for any hospital and would never recommend this hospital or for any surgery as they do not provide adequate or responsible care after surgery but try to get you out as quickly as possible as they could care less what you have to deal with at home after surgery when you leave such as an infection acquired while at Roper. I would carefully check healthgrades, accreditation status and doctor ratings before choosing a Roper doctor as you can do much better in acquiring a caring doctor or hospital especially for serious issues. read more

One of my friends wound up at Roper Hospital this weekend because of his own stupidity yes you were not the wisest my friend and from the moment you have check in until discharge later the next day, I was there the whole time, everyone was exceptional! Awful hospital. Went into ER for Covid in August of 21, my deductible was fully satisfied, yet they turned the amount between the bill and what my medical insurance paid over to collections without billing me for it. I'm now 6 months from that point and still cannot get them to zero out the balance and retract the amount in collections. Even when their claims representative told me it would be taken care of on each of my calls to them. Oh...and the care? It sucked. The nurses and doctors of the ER that night acted as if I was interrupting their personal play time as I was the only one there. The discharge nurse tossed my paperwork on the bed and said I was free to leave. Walked past the desk on my way out, no one bothered to look up or even say anything as simple as "Feel better". Miserable institution. Go to MUSC instead. There you get treated with dignity and respect. read more

Clean environment and friendly staff with loving nurses. I have had two surgeries here this year and both times I have had absolutely no complaints at all. Rooms are spacious and they are very good at keeping your loved ones updated on your condition. You also get free valet parking as a patient. Definitely recommend. read more

I've been here once, and the care was beyond my expectations. I have a phobia about hospitals, surgery, and doctors. They were all so nice. They put me at ease, and the recovery was fast. Hell, I don't even remember the surgery, and that's what I wanted! My dad has been here several times. They take such good care of him every time. They always explain what is going to happen, what we should expect, and approximate time as when the procedure will start and how long it should last. They have a Starbucks in the main lobby, and that is a Godsend. It's small and can form a line quickly. I've eaten in the cafeteria once, and I won't be back. It is just too confusing! Different stations for different types of food with no organization as to where lines form. Then you have to hunt down the condiments, then where the hell to pay. Bad idea all around. I got a hamburger, and it was just like the ones they used to serve in high school (a.k.a hockey puck). Love the care, forget about the cafeteria. read more

I have no complaints about my visit here last month. My only problem had to do with my GPS taking me to the back door, which is not where you want to enter from, ever. We found the front door on Calhoun and the valet was waiting for us. They parked the car while we walked in to my designated area. Check-in was easy, and I soon found myself in the room where I get gowned up and prepped. I was greeted by several RN's and other specialty people who took care of my anesthesia and answered all of my questions. My personal items were bagged and ready for me when my surgery was completed. Honestly, I don't remember much from the point the anesthesia people started the drip, up until the point that I woke up in the recovery room. My incision scars were perfectly covered in glue to keep them secure, and they've healed up quite nicely now. I was operated on by Dr Blessing, and I would recommend him for anyone that needs a surgical specialist. read more

I really want to say thank you to the ER staff at Roper Downtown. I had been sick with a fever, sore throat, body aches, chills, sweats, a wet cough, The Works, and after two visits to Doctor's Care I was frustrated. The doctor's at the office saw me, swabbed my throat and nose, told me everything came back negative and there was nothing they could do. Take ibuprofen and Tylenol, hope for the best. On the sixth straight day of a fever running around 100 or higher I called the office seeking advice- should I go back to the office or go to the ER? I knew something was very wrong. The receptionist told me "you can do whatever you want. If you come to the office we can swab you again but since we've already done it twice it probably won't make a difference." Very helpful, thanks for the advice, so glad I called I then drove myself from work to Roper downtown where I was quickly triaged and immediately taken back to the ER, where the nurses were extremely kind and attentive, and Doctor Turner was so thorough. I didn't feel like an inconvenience, I felt like I was being taken very seriously, and I was treated with the utmost respect. All of my questions were answered completely, and in a way that I understood but didn't feel like I was being talked down to. I didn't feel rushed or brushed off. I felt like a person, and I felt like the staff really cared about getting to the bottom of what had made me so sick for a week. As it turns out, I had both the flu and pneumonia. The ER staff ran blood tests and took x-rays, things that were not done at the office I had been visiting, and got me on an intense antibiotic regimen and for the first time in 8 days I no longer have a fever. I can't thank the hospital staff enough, from the first woman I met at Triage all the way to Dr. Turner who solved the mystery of me. Thank you Roper, thank you so much. Had I not come in to the hospital I don't know what would have happened to me. Thank you. read more

The ER and CVICU staff are amazing. His care team of doctors, nurse practitioners, physicians assistants, and all are amazing. All was great until you to go to the normal floor to recover. The Buxton unit looks really nice...but they have the raggy broke down equipment. It's like they get whatever is left over that is 30 years old. The beds have rusty frames. One bed broke and started moving in the wrong direction when you push the button. It tried to fold up. The nurses swapped for a different bed. That bed sounded like metal grinding on metal and the bed was too small. After a lot of complaining and calling it took 4 days to finally get a bed that fits and is comfortable. The lounge chair was also too small. I had to call all over the place to complain and remind the hospital that you do bariatric surgeries in this facility and you do not have beds for tall or large people or chairs to fit them. The nurses did their best but stated they have a very limited number of beds that fit the need and if a patient is in the bed they have to wait until they are out of the bed and it's cleaned. My next issue is the food. Its slop!!!! One day you get a perfectly cooked meal the next it's half-cooked with strange powder sprinkled on it. I was told that Roper contracts food out to Morrison's catering. Well, people in prison get better food I am sure. Being served crunchy rice. 3 times in a row they put some strange muffin-looking stuff on his tray with white cream on top and syrup running on the bottom of the sauce as if it was the glue to keep the muffin from falling over. I never figured out what it was supposed to be by smell or taste. Most of the meals have had so-called food on them that was unidentifiable by sight, smell, or taste. I bring appropriate meals for someone who just had major stomach surgery. I went to the cafeteria to see if there was better food and it was the same. SLOP. I saw 3 people working. One was actually working and the other two young women were too busy talking about their love lives to even notice me or the other staff member standing there waiting. I stood and waited, was never greeted or asked if I needed help. I walked out. The nurses and staff in this hospital work so hard to care for their patients, it seems as if Roper doesn't care and likes opening new facilities and not taking care of what was the original facility. The minimum Roper can do is to provide the nursing staff the equipment they need so their patients can have a speedy uneventful recovery. I truly feel bad for the staff who have to listen to families and patients complaining about the food and equipment knowing they are powerless to fix it. read more

WORD OF WARNING - shop around before you agree to get labs at any of the Roper Diagnostics labs. I have regular labs done 1/4ly. I usually go through my Doc's office and pay around $60 for the labs. I want to my local Roper Diagnostic lab and one test was over THREE TIMES the COST. For one, simple, lab test. My bill in total was almost $300 (out of pocket, mind you). I won't make that mistake again and I urge all of you to shop around for any lab work needed. read more

I can't thank everyone enough for the wonderful care that I received while being at Roper/ St. Francis back on May 3,2021 As you can imagine being on vacation and being challenged with some health concerns left me extremely frightened and unsure of what to do and where to go.  Somehow as luck would have it I ended up at Roper with Dr. Rieder as my Cardiologist. I hit lotto!!! It was a very enjoyable experience from beginning to end.From the ED staff, to Dr. Rieder and his assistant KJ, to the Cardiac Cath Staff Johnny and Kelly, and to the amazing nurses on the 4th floor McKenzie and Morgan, the care that I received was without reproach. Dr. Rieder was so incredibly supportive and I have never felt so confident in someone helping me make some difficult decisions and for that I am truly grateful. He has an amazing ability to provide clear explanations, listen attentively and all with a friendly and caring attitude! I just want the staff at Roper to know how much I appreciate all that was done for me. I am a nurse of 40 years and never imagined that patient care could be so heart felt and delivered with such kindness!  Wishing you all a happy and enjoyable summer. read more

Dr. Jennings is the surgeon of the year! I didn't quite understand all the options that were going with my family member. When he reviewed the procedure and the possibilities, he answered all my questions. I particularly liked the waiting room setup for family members. Many hospitals list by name / number but the volunteers in this area go the extra mile (highlighting vents /bringing light blankets/providing water) for family members. read more

Where do I start. I took my wife here to get some X-rays done. We first went to the outpatient registration section. We were treated great there. We laughed and the person made us feel very welcome. They told us we needed to go over to the image section to get X-rays. It was about a 30 second walk. We arrived and went inside and were greeted by a middle aged man that was very reluctant to help us. He looked at our paper work and said "sit down, let me check something." He then walked to the back and came back like 2 minutes later and said, "it's going to be a few minutes just wait there." A couple minutes later a very nice lady came and got my wife and took her back. I walk right across the hallway and got a drink and came back in the room and asked the gentlemen and a different lady if I could us the restroom right beside them. They both gave me a look and with an attitude said, "i guess." I felt as if some reason they didn't want me to. When I can out I sat down and could over hear them bad talking a few patients. One of them said, "I'm glad we don't have to see them anymore lord knows nobody wants to see them." They were being very rude. As in writing this I just heard the man call some woman a "hefer." When you go to a hospital you want to feel comfortable. This place did not make me or my wife feel that way. read more

I visited the Emergency Room around 2:30 a.m., I was impressed with the fact that I immediately was taken back and cared for. The first round of nurses were very friendly and caring. Next came the head nurse (I assume that's what she was) she was very cold and unfriendly. The doctor was even worse, he asked me multiple times if I was a smoker, I repeatedly told him no and he just kept on asking as if he thought i was lying. After many tests and waiting while I heard everyone joking and talking at the counter, they finally told me what they thought was wrong, the doctor then went back to the counter and laughed and said, "She's just a hypochondriac." I was so offended, I am someone that does not go to the doctor unless it's completely necessary, let alone the E.R. This was my second time in my life ever resorting to the E.R. So, to hear him say that about me truly made me upset. The head nurse then came back in and scolded me for not keeping my arm completely straight so my IV would hurry up and finish, something I did not even know I was supposed to be doing. Then more waiting and being ignored, finally after being in there for almost 4 hours, I was quickly told I could leave. My IV was removed, I had some paperwork put in front of me to sign and then the nurse left and said, "Have a good night." I had no idea if it was time to actually go or not. No one walked us out or anything. Worst experience ever. read more

I feel that it takes a considerable amount of service by ALL the personnel to give a 5 star rating. I was in Roper Hospital for a procedure relating to my heart. The person in Admissions were rude, when I didn't want to place my hand on the scanner she got annoyed. Then she placed the wrist band so tight I had to remove it when I got to the CAT lab. The nurse there was also rude I think her name was Bernie. She was annoyed with everything. They replaced the wrist band. Now as for the A-Fib Coordinator (Melissa Tecosky) she is so nice, helpful, compassionate and sympathetic to all my needs. To this day she is on top of everything I asked for and needed. This woman is definitely an asset to Roper. When the procedure was over the nurse on the 4th fl. was Dave he was on top of everything, he was SO helpful and courteous. I really can't say enough about this guy. Now when he left the night nurse took over, Jeremy was a complete difference. He told me at 10pm that night the a person would come in at 5 am to draw blood. I asked him, please make 6am. Well this women comes into my room at 4:45 am, I asked please come back at 6 am, She said I'm running late and left. read more

I will say I visited MUSC first. After following the requirements of the first surgeon he then told me on Sept 5th that his "SPIDEY" senses said he should not replace my hip. Second opinion surgeon at MUSC said he would do it and I called the following morning on or around sept. 15th. on November 3rd with no call for scheduling I asked my primary care to send me elsewhere. I left MUSC with scripts for 30 mg of oxycodone 6 times per day and 10 mg 8 times a day! I went directly to my primary care doc and he said that was overdose territory, even though I had been prescribed pain control for 20 years. we went to 120 mg a day period. I saw Dr. Harry Rudolph on Nov. 3rd at Roper office on James Island. He scheduled surgery right away after seeing my x-rays at his office which showed massive osteoarthritis and bone on bone hip joint on the right side. He scheduled on the spot his first opening on Nov. 21st. Surgery went great I was home on the 22nd. Four weeks later was getting around great. 8 weeks after surgery I was driving. The pain in my lower back is gone and the left hip no longer hurts! Almost a year later I have lost 80 pounds, exercise more and have come off opioids. Can't recommend Roper or Dr. Rudolph enough They are like my guardians angels. I beg everyone to go to Roper for anything and everything needed from a hospital. read more
