Yet, he purchased other properties in the area and built at least one other house and a large farm, and came to those properties to spend summers, every year. Boldt Castle is still in the process of being finished, so the 3rd and 4th floors are pretty much white washed plaster walls in the rooms, with no fireplaces. But the ground floor and 2nd are done and are spectacular. The grounds are beautiful! A great way to spend an afternoon. Snacks and drinks are available.

The entire island is perfectly maintained with vibrant flowers and gardens that looked immaculate even in late September. There is so much to see and its much bigger than it looks. There is so much attention to detail you can still miss things even after walking around for hours. I saw a couple get married while I was there and I can't even imagine how stunning those photos will turn out! A lot of people have already mentioned the beautiful and tragic history of this castles creation. I love that you can still go tp the upper floors of the castle that are not yet renovated and see the graffiti and signs of decay. The layout of the castle really tells a story and the classical music played in the background really adds to the immersion. There are also audio tours available. So much love was put into the original vision and execution of this project as well as the restoration. There are even heats all over the island. 10/10 would recommend spending a few hours here if you're ever visiting the area.

The volunteer staff will go out of their way to ensure that your visit is memorable and answer all questions with gusto. We were lucky to see the Iron Lung display and were shocked and saddened by the activity around those kids that needed it. Things have changed now in how oxygen is transmitted to the patient but it is very interesting to see how they solved the problem for those that needed it.

I was amazed at the clever innovation by the prisoners making a toaster, a liquor still, a gun, a radio and a shiv. we were lucky to have a retired correctional officer provide an impromptu tour and fill in the blanks on what life may be on the inside and insights to the riots, the escapes, Paul Bernardo and how the system works hard to rehabilitate those that need it.

He attended the art school at Yale University and eventually went out west to Montana at age nineteen, returning to Ogdensburg and eventually his first publishing in 1886 at the age of twenty-five. He is perhaps best known for the sculpture "The Broncho Buster" which has a copy here on display. As well, a number of his other paintings of the west. The images have captions and there are art tours/discussions on a regular basis. This review is for the Strawberry Festival held June 16, 2014. There were six vendors offering…read moresamples, problem is, only four of the six had anything to do with Strawberries. Come on, you can do better than that. Of the four offering strawberry themed samples only one stood out and I will post his pictures first. The Society had a great idea of providing a ticket with each vendor on it and directing each person to visit each vendor to get the ticket stamped. The cost of the ticket was just $6.00 and I think that was a real deal! Please have more vendors next year.

Super friendly and informative staff even though we arrived near closing time. Must check out the huge garden!! The staff there take care of the garden (pesticide and GMO free) and donate the goods to charity. It might not look like a lot but wait until the staff give you a garden tour - favourite part of my visit here as you can tell.. Get in free with Canada 150 Parks Pass or ask for one at the front desk. Parking is at the lot across the street.

We toured Bellevue House with our K-Pass, a neat little "passport" that provides you with access to…read moremany Kingston attractions. Bellevue was the home of Sir John A. Macdonald, first Prime Minister of Canada. Our period costumed guide, Harrison, was very personable and knowledgable. We learned a lot about early Canadian history and how John Macdonald and his family spent his time at the house. Bellevue House's furniture and fixtures are all from the 1840's or earlier, so they are consistent with the furniture that would have been in the house while the Macdonalds lived there. There are several things owned by the PM himself, including his crib from when he was a child in Scotland. Bellevue also keeps with the historical time period by growing several heritage apple varieties that would have been grown in the 1840's, as well as a garden on the grounds that grows vegetables. Much of the food grown is donated to a local food shelf, and some is given to a bar called Sir John's Public House, located in a building which housed Macdonald's law firm from 1849 to 1860. You can also explore the house on your own if you're not into guided tours, but I would recommend it, especially if you don't know much about Canadian history. It's worth the hour and 15 minutes.
