When we arrived -- 15 minutes early, by the way -- and told the host about our reservation, he looked completely shocked. He denied ever receiving a reservation call. I showed him my call log (see attached screenshot), which clearly shows we called the correct number. He admitted he was the only man working the phones and that it was indeed the right number -- but still insisted no reservation had been made. Even though the restaurant had empty tables, he refused to seat us, was incredibly rude, and paid us no attention while continuing to serve others. No apology at all. No effort to resolve anything. Just left us standing there. Absolutely absurd and laughable experience. Never again.

Finding the venue is pretty challenging in the dark, as you have to drive down very narrow and bumpy unlit lanes. We had an email from the restaurant beforehand advising us that one of the two roads on the approach were flooded, which was useful advice to know in advance! The building itself is a mixture of old and new - built in the 90s, but from local stone it gives the impression of a barn conversion. The interior is warm and welcoming, but clean and modern. We were greeted at the bar and quickly seated at our table in the dining room. I understand that the huge windows at the end of the room offer amazing views, but as it was dark when we were there we were unable to see this. The menu is what you'd probably describe as British classics. I had black pudding and chorizo to start which was nice, but the black pudding wasn't the tastiest I've ever had. Mark had deep friend prawns and calamari which he enjoyed. For our mains, Mark had a steak and onion pie and I went for the steak pudding. Both were nice, but I couldn't help but feel that the presentation of the pudding was underwhelming. It was just slapped on the plate with a sea of mushy peas and chips. And the chips themselves were fine - nice, but nothing to write home about. Dessert was amazing though - I had sticky date pudding which was out of this world, and Mark had the waffles and ice cream which was enormous! This was a really nice way to round out the meal. Despite the name, it isn't a seafood restaurant but a restaurant showing off British quality cuisine, nestled in the rolling hills of Ramsbottom, where you keep thinking you're getting lost until you see the occasional sign popping out of the bushes telling you that you're nearly there. As you park up, you see the wonderful surroundings of the place and hear the rush of a nearby strong stream. Very pleasant. You walk into the front doors and the first thing you see is a nice bit of provenance, showing the construction of the restaurant in 1992. I love things like this, it's nice to see people being proud of something they've put their passion into.You then pass by a large whisky bottle shop. Surprising, but a nice touch of class! Greeted at the bar, we give our names as we made a reservation and we are taken through to the next room, which is a real dramatic first impression. You walk though a small arch and into an extremely large room with a gigantic window at the far end, looking out onto the rolling moors. It's definitely a "wow" moment. The room is quite modern and a touch on the stark side, but the view makes up for it. The furniture is large chunky modern wood, and generously seated so everyone has room. We're seated and given our menu along with the day's specials. We order a couple of Diet Pepsi's, and have a nosy at the menu. The drinks take a while to appear, but I'm happy to say that two different members of staff came to update us about the situation (a problem with the pump), and gave us some water in the meantime. Service like this is what makes a potentially poor situation well handled and happily received. We start by ordering the garlic bread, described as oven baked focaccia brushed with garlic butter and served with aged balsamic and duo of pesto. I'll get this part out of the way because this was the only underwhelming part of the experience. When it came out we were quite surprised at how small the garlic bread was considering it was listed as "to share" and was £8.00, and despite being a nice piece of bread, we couldn't actually taste much garlic or seasoning at all, which was a shame. However the pesto and balsamic worked perfectly with it and saved it a little. For our mains, I ordered the beef wellington. I've never had beef wellington in a restaurant before and it seemed the perfect "special" choice. My partner ordered the steak and mushroom pie. Both arrived very pleasantly presented. The quality here was superb. The pie was bursting with flavour, and the pastry was perfect. The chips were also just as crunchy and satisfying as you'd hope! The beef wellington was stunning. I was asked if I wanted it pink or cooked through... it's nice to be asked but if you're ordering beef wellington cooked through you might as well order a burger. The beef was pink and juicy, the mushrooms superbly flavourful, and although the pastry was a touch soft, it was still delicious. The part I actually enjoyed most however was the dauphinois potatoes, which was a brick of beautifully flavoured and seasoned layers. I enjoyed every last mouthful of it, and the dish as a whole was really excellent! We were really impressed by the food, and so just had to order dessert! My partner opted for the sticky date pudding, and I opoted for the Baileys and white chocolate cheesecake, which they kindly allowed me to substitute chocolate ice cream for their cookies and cream ice cream as I'm not a big fan of chocolate ice cream. The one detail I found odd with the venue was that the ladies toilets were a door just off the main room, but the gents are actually out of the room, through the bar, down a corridor, and by the front door... very odd! More than once we saw blokes going to what they assumed was the gents toilet in the next door along, only to wander into a cloakroom and be quickly chased by a member of staff directing them the right way. Despite turning up on time we had to queue outside for at least 25 minutes with several others waiting for people to finish their meals. Once inside the waiter was super apologetic, and you could tell he needed a drink himself. The restaurant was very cosy with interesting pieces of art on the walls. A nice very traditional feel about the place. Anyway the starters consisted of various seafood and meat dishes to which you can size up as a main on average pricing of £7 to £15. I had the pork cheeks and himself the clam spaghetti. While we waited we were presented with canapés consisting of cheese and carmalised onions..the other truffle oil on crackers. These were a very tasty treat. The spaghetti was well made and the sauce light smothering the tiny clams. My pork cheek was super tender, and it lay perched on perfect mash, panchetta, black pudding, pickled onions in a tomato broth. Various bits of bread was also served to mop up this juice. Only criticism clam meat is sooo small in this country so not worth the battle against the shells for such a tiny reward. For mains I had the seafood special which was a bowl filled with mussels, clams, scallop, king prawns and longuistines swimming in a broth and fresh pasta. This was super tasty, cooked to perfection and presented nicely. My only gripe was I only had one at most two scallops. My other half chose the lamb which again was super tender, in a homely bed of mash, sauce and root vegetables. Super simple dish but everything was cooked perfectly. I was feeling quite full but the orange panacotta with orange sorbet was too tasty to miss. It didn't disappoint. Overall despite the disappointing beginning the service was impeccable and food really tasty. However I did expect a bit more in terms of creativity considering this was a Michelin star restaurant. Definitely worth a visit if you enjoy your seafood especially.

Despite recently painting the shop a rancid orange colour, Harun's remains the best takeaway in Southport for you to greedily stuff your mouth with greasy goodness in the early hours of the morning. The food there is well made and delicious albeit not particularly cheap (damn you Southport) and the staff there are friendly and will happily talk with you for hours about good Turkish footballers (believe me; it happens every week when we go). They also have a punching machine in there (perhaps to curb the violent enthusiasm of the Southport residents) which causes much hilarity at three in the morning when my mates decide to show each other who can hit something the hardest.
