This place is a hop away from the Opera metro station and Plaza Espana. It was about a 6 minute quick walk from the Sol metro station. I went there for dinner on a Tuesday night at around 8:45pm. The place was empty, but it picked up by 9:15pm. I was greeted by a friendly waiter who spoke English. The decor was a feast to the eyes, bright and cheerful. There were some Hindi songs playing in the background. I was served with a lightly fried papad and a variety of interesting sauces and a hot mixed vegetable pickle. I ordered the mixed non-vegetarian starter. It came with chicken samosa, onion pakora, ragda pattie and a spring roll. All of them were delicately prepared, but to my utter disappointment, they were too bland to be called Indian food. They were understandably made for the Spanish taste palates, but come on, there was not a hint of spice in any of them. Then I asked for their most hottest and spiciest prawn biryani. The waiter warned that it might be too hot, but as I suspected, it was just the right amount of hotness for me:) The rice was perfectly cooked and the biryani had an appetizing aroma with a decent flavor, very light on the tummy.
The biggest disappointment though, was the gulab jamun. It was oval in shape and had mucho coconut in it. It had the right amount of sweetness, but it tasted nothing like a jamun. Then I ended the meal with a cardamom tea with lots of milk, just the way we Desi folk like it.
I have eaten worst "Indian food" at other places that is ladened with oil and butter and with a cacophony of strong flavors. So, when I see worst Indian food, I would like to think that I will be able to tell and this is not it. I give this place four stars for an overall pleasant experience, even though I was not happy with the lack of flavors that you usually expect with the Indian cuisine. If you are craving authentic spicy Indian food, there is a high chance that you will be greatly disappointed. But this place is definitely worth trying atleast once and finding for yourself. read more
