Angela, the host, was wonderful -- friendly, welcoming, and just a joy to be around. She helped with taxi arrangements, restaurant recommendations and reservations, and even let us practice our Italian with her each day. The property itself is stunning, with grapevines, olive groves, lavender, succulents, and even two very cute cats roaming around. Breakfast was simple and traditional -- fresh baked goods each morning, eggs made to order, hot coffee, and fruit. A perfect start to the day. The rooms were spacious and very comfortable. Opening the windows at night kept the room cool while letting in the peaceful sounds of nature. It's about a 10-minute drive to the center of Orvieto. Taxis were around €25 each way, so something to plan for depending on how you're getting around. I highly recommend staying here if you're visiting the area.

It wasn't until 2008 that I had the opportunity to visit Casa Caponetti for the first time. It's gorgeous! Just outside the ancient Etruscan town of Tuscania is this ~200 acre horse/olive farm with trees as old as 500 years! Lorenzo has built upon his family's land an amazing farm that produces some of Italy's best olive oil. There is also a new restaurant in development. Chef Mark Medina-Rios formerly of A Voce, in NYC, is serving up farm to fork cuisine in the intimate dining room just off the kitchen. The lodge is being renovated and there is a resource efficient new dining space in the works. The Via Claudia, first road north from Rome, runs directly through the property with Etruscan tombs scattered around the grounds. There is even a 2,800 year old water cavern that harvests H2O from the atmosphere. This place is epic and worth the trip!

This is heaven on earth!…read more Alessia and Max were absolutely remarkable. I traveled in a group of 6 people (3 from Texas and 3 from New York City) and we spent a week here in August 2015. We selected the breakfast option and it was a splendid way to motivate our group to get up and get moving, and even more enjoyable that some of the breakfast comes directly from the farm you're staying on. The grounds are well kept, the apartment is more than adequate and is beautiful. The view from the pool is breathtaking.... I cannot exaggerate how incredible the view is. There is also a gigantic kitchen that guests can use to cook their own meals as well. The WiFi worked well and all of the windows and doors have functional bug screens which are critical in Italy with mosquitoes. If you're looking to escape a big city and stress, this is heaven on earth. It's absolutely quiet at night, at the end of a gravel road and you can see the stars (even the Milky-way Galaxy) at night. Meanwhile, we used this as a day-trip central point. It's perfectly central to about two dozen towns and sites to see, our only regret is that we didn't have more time here. The hosts are friendly, yet respectful of their guests. I'm one to avoid B&B's in the USA because I'm nervous of hosts (living in NYC I've learned not to trust people).... but honestly Alessia and Max were wonderful people. They let us warm up nice and slowly and they are clearly very sincere, friendly, relaxed and charming, while being well traveled and sophisticated. Next time we travel to Umbria... we are definitely staying here again!

Had a lunch at De Gustibus which only can be served in the Italian countryside. A great variety of…read morecheese, ham and sausage. From ricotta to mortadella to salsiccia. Honey and different kinds of marmalade. Biological, of course. Vegetables of different variations. Spremuta, orange juice and coffee of highest quality. All served by two sweet ladies. You are taken good care of at De Gustibus, Gradoli. Included is clean mountain air and a view over Lake Bolsena. Buon appetito!
