We had a van and it unfortunately got dented in the process of trying to fit into the parking spot we were given. We were in a triple room which was a twin sofa bed and a king size bed upstairs in a loft. It was a big room. The restroom was a little dated and there was some mold in the shower. You need to return your key to the front desk every time you leave the hotel. You pick it up when you come back.

While both are exceptional in their own cuisines, I do wish there were more restaurants on-site. SPA: I had a facial and a deep tissue massage, but both were disappointing--overhyped and expensive for what you're getting. The facial felt like a basic cycle of product being applied and washed off x5. As for the deep massage, I fell asleep, which is never a good sign. One has to drive around the hillside if you are approaching from Rome, so you get to appreciate the majestic buildings. The road in is cypress-lined and magnificent. The car park is a little ways away from the hotel, so th staff comes out with a golf cart to bring you and your luggage up to the reception, where you get greeted by a glass of Banfi wine! It is always available as courtesy either in the reception or the library (which is in the castle). The 14 rooms are in the old homes of the supporting help for the castle, so each is different and unique. We had the Principessa, located just across the cobblestone path from the cafe/bar and the swimming pool. It was the old schoolroom for the children of the workers, with a beautiful view to the west, overlooking the vast vineyards extending down the hill. There was a courtesy bottle of Banfi prosecca awaiting us. Since the weather was so hot (~40 degrees C), the fact that we had excellent AC was much appreciated. We enjoyed the solitude of the swimming pool at sunset, the bar with excellent wine and cocktails and small plates, the breakfast buffet and the excellent gourmet restaurant. Dining outside late in the evening, we enjoyed a thoroughly leisurely Italian dinner, with some excellent local recipes updated for the modern palate. The location is perfect for exploring the town of Montalcino and the surrounding countryside, i.e., wineries! Poggio Antico is nearby, but our favorite, Caparzo was a little drive on the opposite side of the town. A car is a must to get around Tuscany, but well worth the cost. Our biggest problem was finding and figuring out the car washes (lavatorias), since the dusty back roads left the car covered in dirt! We thoroughly enjoyed our few days in the countryside before heading onto the cities of Siena and Firenze. Now we just need to figure out when we can go back!

I stayed in November so it was quite quiet which has it's own benefits, but I can only imagine how gorgeous it is over the summer with their beautiful pools and gardens. This is a spread out, commune-wide hotel concept with properties that span along the two main drags in town. I enjoyed my stay at the core hotel, with easy, free parking right nearby. You walk a gorgeous stroll to breakfast each morning along a flowery corridor over to the Antico restaurant. The included breakfast is by far the best hotel breakfast I've encountered, with breads, a few different menu options, fresh juices, full coffee bar, and loving staff. I enjoyed journaling and eating both mornings of my stay and also appreciated how beautifully decorated the space is. My room was great, though up three flights of stairs (not uncommon for any stay in Italia). A very comfortable bed and welcoming front desk staff that helped me book a massage appointment, discover the best and open parts of town, and also hooked me up with a complimentary beverage upon arrival in the hotel's living room space. What could be better? While I was travelling and staying here solo, this is truly a couple's paradise. They have a dedicated couples spa area and packages set up, gorgeous wines available at the bar and restaurants, and romantic gardens to stroll all through town. Hospitality at it's finest and if I ever need a home base while I am in Tuscany (if you're looking to explore the wine regions of Montelcino/ Montepulciano or the hot spring regions of Bagno Vignoni / Saturnia - this is the spot for you) this is where I'll stay. Note: not accessible without a rental car. I looked up 100 different ways to avoid driving and, while in Tuscany, you simply need a car. I took a bus from Florence to Grosseto and rented my car there so to avoid having to drive in any city centers - a great plan that served me well. It's then an hour drive into San Quirico d'Orcia. I am disappointed to write a negative review of this restaurant as we were expecting some of the…read morebest food of our trip to Cortona. For context we are a family from San Diego, California that regularly goes to Michelin level restaurants. So, that said a 1/5 stars review is not to say anything was terrible at Il Falconiere but I am holding it to the standard we know for Michelin starred establishments. The service was uneven at best. One guest in our party politely declined the welcome champagne as she does not drink alcohol and the waiter appeared downright offended. The Michelin standard in this situation would be to offer the non-alcoholic sparkling option as a substitute in my opinion which was not done, though she did later discover it on the menu and order a glass for herself. Our waiter also corrected one of the guests that "noodles are Chinese" when she was clarifying an order for one of the children at our table trying to order them pasta with cheese. Perhaps saying noodles is impolite in Tuscany but Michelin level service should not be rudely correcting guests like this. The food was fine but again for a one Michelin star restaurant the attention to detail just was not at that level. All four adults did the tour of Tuscany 6 course tasting menu while the children had pasta and chicken. Temperatures and textures were off and to be honest I can do better job at home with duck breast which was tough and gamey. Credit where it is due the pasta course was incredible and a standout. Lastly in terms of value this just does not stand up to other nearby restaurants in Cortona where we have regularly been impressed by the value and quality of meals. Just last night we had a meal for 9 (6 adults and 3 children) with multiple courses (appetizers, pasta, meat, dessert) and a bottle of wine for 350 euros out the door. Here lunch was 950 euros for 4 tasting menus and 3 children and a half bottle of champagne. Obscene prices for the quality compared to nearby Cortona restaurants. I had another dinner reservation here for later this week which immediately canceled after lunch. I cannot imagine spending more money here.

What can be said about this spot…read more.. Well, perhaps the best way to describe the experience is alike to previously common Facebook status, "It's Complicated." The road leading up to the property is far from amazing, so if driving a Lambo or a Ferrari, it will be a disaster to put simply to get through the bumps. Obviously, not everyone drives expensive cars to come here, but as a Michelin starred spot and a Relais Chateaux hotel, it would be thoughtful to accommodate arrival a bit better at the top of the line price point. The interior design is a greenhouse meeting a Modani furniture store, which creates a rather confusing design. It cannot be said as terrible, but it's far from beautiful in the evening, although perhaps the views during daytime hours make it a bit better. Even the restroom is sized for a hamster trying to close the door. Platters and silverware are very average. When it comes to food, Il Falconiere offers four tasting menus. There is a requirement that all guests at the table get the same menu or order A La Carte. Again, a very odd requirement, because it almost defeats the point of having so many tasting menus to begin with, requiring guests with varying tastes to either sacrifice or go for a diminished a La carte experience. The "White Giant" or Chianina menu highlighting local Tuscan cattle was my selection. An excellent carpaccio, followed by ox tongue, vermicelli, stuffed pappardella, sirloin and tiramisu dessert. The menu was half wonderful, half disappointing, with ox tongue being too tough, sirloin being low on flavor and tough, and tiramisu being a complete disappointment. Carpaccio, pappardele and vermicelli were great. Desserts all around across the menu left much to the desired, with half being dominated by simple puddings. But, Michelin starred restaurants are intended to embrace experimentation, so that is not the reason I give Il Falconiere such a low rating. The sommelier was a very unpleasant man, borderline rude. Not only was he not friendly, but did not take feedback well and even refused to change a wine glass for a different shape one. Wine tasting menu, besides being well aligned to dishes, was filled with cheap wines relative to the price paid. He was also overly sensitive about us taking a picture of the wine and asking not to do so. Overall, just a disaster. Some of the waiters were quite unpleasant and inattentive also. Overall, Il Falconiere is far from being deserving of even a single Michelin star and even without it, would not make my list of recommendations. Poor design, bad service and many misses on dishes, especially desserts can be cited as the main reasons.
