Ahan is a must visit when in Madison! They have THE best Thai/Laotian food in town. The food is super flavorful, well presented, and fresh. We had a party of 5 on a Sunday night and had to wait 30 minutes. We got a number of entrees and drinks. We got the red curry udon, green curry, Khao Soi, fried rice, and fried chicken entrees. All of us had differing favorites because you truly can't go wrong with what you order here. We were impressed with the packed flavor and how juicy/well cooked the proteins were. The staff was super nice and checked in on us multiple times, even though it's a "order at the counter" type of place. Being in Madison, I expect the Asian community to be small. So in order to cater to the demographic, the food has to stand out to Madison folks. Coming from Chicago, the food scene here is very limited and mediocre. Thai food... it just wasn't the same as the food I can get in other places. I was trying to eat Ahan last year when it was at other location but couldn't that day because of a wedding. So this time, I waited an hour to try Ahan. Interior of the space is great. Ordering system works well for this. The food... was either too salty or had unlisted ingredients. The drunken noodle does not disclose that it contains shellfish. Therefore, my friends had a bite first and then warned me that they can taste shrimp. When we asked one of the workers, they confirmed that it does have some type of shellfish. The plates here are meant to be single serving which was not the best for people looking to do family style/ shared plates. We also ordered the coconut curry which came with one spoon and it was playing cat and mouse to get a server's attention to ask for another spoon. The fried rice balls were so salty.. dipping it in the sauce made it more bearable. The last thing we ordered was the fried rice, which didn't stand out to us at all. The Red Curry Udon entrée was fantastic! You should definitely get this if you dine here. The spices were amazing. The drunken noodles entrée had kind of a funny taste to it; we think it had too much fish sauce. We arrived around 12:30 PM on a Sunday and put our orders in online with our phones and the food was ready in about 20-30 minutes. We dined on their outdoor patio area. For a party of 2 at around 5:30 pm it took around 15 minutes to be seated (which was very reasonable). I ordered the Lao egg roll for appetizer and it was delicious. The wrapper was light and crispy and the filling was a tasty combination of pork with veggies. For entrees I got the Khao Soi Luang Prabang and Drunken Noodles. The Khao Soi Luang Prabang was so delicious - it was the perfect combination of spice, meat, noodles, and veggies in a rich soupy broth. My 4 review only belongs to Khao Poon soup. The fact that when I'm craving for it, I can drive an hour 15 minutes to have it. They are good. They come with chix or fried tofu. We stopped into Ahan tonight for the first time at their new location and WOW. The food and drinks were so delicious. We came in on a Saturday night with my dad who is in a wheelchair and my 1 year old. They were unbelievably accommodating and kind. I've received carryout a few times and had a chance to dine in the other night at their new location (former Eldorado). Definitely a boost up from their previous space but definitely not a fan of their order at the register and take a number. I feel this is not customer friendly as it breaks the dining experience. Want a drink before dinner? Head on up and order and come back to table. Want to order dinner? Go back up and order. Want a dessert? You get the idea. I get it for restaurants that are more cafeteria style or those that are having staffing issues. I saw at least 5 people running food, filling water, etc so staffing doesn't appear to be the issue. I would love to have had a waiter that I could consult and get advice on. But with this set up, you read the entire (long menu) on your own... then wait in line (briefly) to order... then I felt the need to order quickly. I really wish I had the chance to ask more about certain dishes. Even how to eat the fish dish I got! (It was unclear what to do with the large uncut cabbage -- is that a garnish? do you cut it up and mix with the fish? Eat one and then the other??). Ordering tips for next time: Mango mule (n/a) was nice. Pisco lychee drink had no lychee flavor, but a lot of tapioca bubbles I wasn't expecting. Special appetizer (taro dumplings with pork) was AMAZING. Summer rolls were fantastic! Mok Pa fish -- I would not order again (for reasons above). I personally think Ahan has the best drunken noodles in town as well. They have a variety of egg roll/spring roll items as well and they are all crunchy and tasty! The ambiance is cute and quaint in the front corner of a venue. It is counter ordering where you place your order at a kiosk, they assign you a number, and they'll bring the food to your table when it's ready. Wow, this place SLAPS. Location so cute, so unique, just tucked on the otherwise of E Wash, it is definitely an old house converted restaurant and venue! The dining are is small in the front, but when we went they were doing an open house for the venue in the back so we quickly grabbed a seat by the window and some menus. It's a counter service place, but they welcome you to find a seat and parous. If the back area wasn't on display you could also sit there. A little lighter in taste than other drunken noodles I've had around Madison. Overall, it was good, especially with extra chili oil for spicy lovers. The fried tofu with it was a perfect compliment. I really wanted to love Ahan, as I'd heard such great things but while everything tasted... okay, it was a pretty disappointing meal overall. Everything was a little pricey, and looked SO beautiful & had good texture, but almost no seasoning or flavor. Started with the Khao Tod, deep-fried rice balls, which were pretty darn tasty (and a huge portion) but the list of flavorings & seasonings was in pretty stark contrast to the Khao Tod themselves, which mostly tasted fried & veeeery faintly of red curry, and the dipping sauce tasted just like mayo in a bowl. Still, these were enjoyable. The fried chicken Praram Long Song was where I started to feel very disappointed. The chicken was super-crispy and moist, but had almost no seasoning, just kinda bland. The peanut sauce tasted like peanut & sugar and not much else. SO MUCH sugar, like a peanut syrup. The vegetables had a nice char on them & were in a sweet soy sauce, which was tasty enough... but overall it was sweet on top of sweet on top of sweet, with not much else going on flavor-wise. I also got the Beef Laab, my absolute favorite Lao dish. The meat was high quality, and I loved the textures throughout... the very rare beef and the little bits of tripe were delightful. But it wasn't NEARLY flavorful enough: not spicy, not sour, not herby, not funky with fish sauce, just... like laab if you dialed all the flavors back 8 notches, to make it boring and bland somehow. Someone came to our table to explain how to eat laab with various vegetables & things as wraps, but the suggested cabbage came in thin strips way too small to wrap anything with, and the suggested lettuce was spring mix, which again are small leaves you can't use to wrap anything. The atmosphere was cute, but the music was real loud, and the ordering system was confusing at times. We ordered our meal just fine but then we had heard about Ahan's awesome dessert options but had NO CLUE how to order them. The menu just says "ask for today's dessert" but because there weren't servers, who do we ask? We were checked on at the end of our meal by someone who asked "do you want more water before you go?" which sure didn't seem like an invitation to order dessert... I still don't know how to order it. The bar looked adorable, and the drinks sounded very tasty (I had to go to work afterwards so I couldn't partake). I might go back for snacks & a cocktail? This is probably the worst restaurant I have ever eaten at... the pho was sickly sweet and the beef laab tasted super fishy (almost rotten tasting). I'm guessing they used expired fish sauce? My friend ate some of the leftovers of the beef laab (my boyfriend couldn't eat more than one bite, and my friend, despite being super hungry with no other options, also couldn't finish) and she had stomach pains a few hours later. Two stars because at least the ambiance and drinks were nice - it might be nice if you just go to the bar. 3.5 I'm sad to say this restaurant did not fully live up to its hype for me. My party got the summer rolls, pork drunken noodles, and tofu red curry udon. The sauce for the summer rolls were spectacular, they gave a sweet tangy and refreshing touch without overpowering the fillings; the rolls themselves was decent, filled with the usual veggie & rice noodle fillings. My drunken noodle was a little too sweet for my liking; the sweet and sour taste from the tomato & sauce was a little too over powering for me. I almost couldn't taste the other veggies within the dish. The curry udon had just the right amount of spice kick to it, and the crispy tofu was the best part. Our server was really attentive, constantly refilling our waters. All other staff members seems extremely nice as well, but it did take awhile (at least 20 minute) for my party to receive our food. Another element to take note of is the restaurants parking lot, as it's on the smaller side to only fit 6-8 cars so be sure to your plan accordingly.
