What am amazing place! First parking is free. Getting into the museum is free! Take all the pictures you want. It's free!! They do have a virtual simulation and that's about $10 But you can honestly spend all day there reading about the Wright brothers and when it all started in 1901. The history is fascinating to how fast aviation grew in such a short time. You'll see engines, and all types of planes. Seriously sooo much to see! Great place to open a child's mind. From the Korean War to the Holocaust. From missiles to space. Enjoy it all. Plus there is a gift shop to support the cause. Liking forward to going back. read more

Crazy amount of planes, missiles, and exhibits! I'm a hobbyist in aviation history so it was great to see aircraft I've never seen before. The Holocaust exhibit was very informative and I'm very glad they had it, as well as the Berlin Airlift exhibit. The restorations were done with perfection. The docents were very open and informative and even answered a question I had about peculiar lights on the tail of the Memphis Belle. My only complaint is the all the signs around each aircraft. Not a huge deal, but maybe I'm just being selfish in my picture taking. read more

Located 15 miles Outside of Dayton, Ohio is the absolute BEST FREE Museum that I have ever been too. Just now getting able to share, I took over 400 photos and have been editing to narrow it down some...It took Tony and over 5 hrs to tour this self paced amazing exhibit and still can't believe it's free!!! So is the Parking and the WI-FI and there are plenty of staff around to answer questions. Some planes you get to climb into like a huge cargo plane and several Presidential Retired Planes belonging to Pesident Eisenhower and Johnson. There are Missles, Bombs and more. Uniforms and Astronaut suits, medals, awards and more. Plenty of bathrooms mixed around the 4 huge hangers. If in the area definitely go, if not then plan to go. I am happy we found this AMAZING LOCATION!!! read more

This museum is downright amazing. To be anywhere near Dayton and to miss it would be a sin. Dayton is very fortunate to have this national historic treasure. I am fortunate that I grew up in Kettering with a Father who appreciated this museum and would regularly take me on visits. It started in 1971 as a young boy when we went to the Museum's dedication and got to hear President Nixon speak. I even remember shaking the President's hand after the dedication. I no longer live in Ohio but when we visit, I make sure to take my family. I recently visited the WWII Museum in New Orleans and found it disappointing, overpriced and overrated. The Smithsonian Air & Space Museum is good, but this one ranks number one in comparison with the quantity of national treasures. As you wind past the aircraft, you're met with some national treasures. One of the main ones that you see (and arguably the most famous plane in the main hangar) is Bosckscar--the aircraft that ended world war II by dropping the second nuclear weapon ever used in combat. You'll also see the Dolittle Raider's exhibit, complete with their goblets; and the stories of the raiders that commemorate the raid. The museum takes you through aviation history from the perspective of the Air Force so there is a lot of war history. The World War II section has always been my favorite. Another favorite is the Presidentail area in the last building with all of the Air Force One's. You can walk through JFK's Air Force One - the very one that Lyndon Johnson was sworn in as President. What is most impressive is the insane number of planes on display in each of the four huge hangars. Including a B2 Stealth bomber. If this is your first visit to the museum, you need to plan an entire day or days to see it all. One piece of advice, get there early if you want to take pictures of the aircraft, before the crowds arrive! This has to be the best museum in the USA and its in Dayton, Ohio - the birthplace of aviation. read more

Hundreds and hundreds of planes throughout the span of American and world aviation for the USAF. The museum is fun for all ages. I am not normally a history buff and this was a great time, so much so we went two days in a row. The volunteers and staff of the AFMF bring the museum to life as many are Air Force or millitary veterans. I enjoyed hearding the stories of their time serving in Korean, Vietnam, and the Middle East (thank you for your service). If you are in Dayton this is a must see museum and site and even if you are just traveling by on your way to another destination you should be visiting this remarkable US treasure. read more

Without a doubt, this is an excellent, incredibly documented museum with marvelous displays. It's much too large to see all in one day, but worth any amount of time you can spend here. For my wife and me it evoked a range of emotions. We were impressed by the ingenious minds who designed and built these craft. We were awed remembering the heroism of men and women who piloted and crewed and maintained these aircraft. We also were sobered thinking of the amount of money that has been put into developing and building these machines. The displays run the gamut of (primarily US Air Force) aircraft history. And there is a particularly poignant and emotion-laden Holocaust display everyone should see. We ended our brief tour looking at some of the aircraft from the Vietnam era. While I served with the US Army in the Central Highlands of Vietnam (1967-1968), I was fortunate to fly in several of the types of aircraft on display. I will be forever grateful to the pilots of both the US Air Force and US Army who ferried me safely from assignment to assignment across the Central Highlands. And I will continue to grieve my friends, remembering the brave individuals with whom I served and who will only see this display from their place in heaven. read more

Great museum with a substantial amount of things to see! Best part is that admission is FREE! Walking through the whole museum can easily take 2-3 hours. We loved seeing all the planes and learning more about US history. We were lucky we came right before they had to close for the stay at home order. WOW! This is a must see for anyone! And it's FREE! Pack a lunch as they have beautiful picnic grounds in the shade! No food or water allowed to come in but they have a few cafes that have sandwiches and drinks. So many things to see! You definitely need more than 1 day. For aviation and history fans this museum is one of the best in the country. A well presented and easy to digest collection of information boards, interactive displays and videos provide a true educational experience. The best feature by far are the planes on display, they are amazing and breathtaking at their scale. The museum is easy to find on the property of Wright Patterson Air Force base just follow the signs. Once you're there you'll have two huge free lots to park in. Admission is also free as is the wifi. That's lots of free stuff! But it ends there, the gift shop, while very intriguing is expensive and the cafe has very average lunch options at a high price. Other than that, there are no draw backs to spending several hours here. The newest addition in hanger 4 is a space themed hanger with flight simulator rides and lots of interactive and exploratory attractions. You can definitely spend a full day here if you pace yourself! Wear comfy shoes!! read more

This extraordinary venue features a collection of both vintage and modern aircraft in several hangars that traces the history of american military aviation - from the dawn of the Wright Brothers to the sleek fighter jets of today! The museum is divided into various sections, each of which delineates aircraft associated with every American military conflict spanning WWI through Operation Enduring Freedom. Took the family here on a weekend. Amazing place. We had a cooler in truck and did picnic in the park located beside the parking area. There are a few shelter houses and some with the typical public charcoal grill on a post. Tons of memorial and dedications in the wooded park. Inside the 4 main buildings so much to look at and explore. If you really take your time, this will take a second day to go through. When I first found out I had to go to Dayton, OH for a business trip. I said to myself oh noooo! What am I going to do there? But luckily I found a huge gem in densely populated city. I decided to visit the Air Force Museum. I decided to give myself a few hours to check out the 3 hangers full of planes, missiles, and space related items. The museum is separated by 3 distinct timelines of human flight. The first one was dedicated to the Wright Brothers and planes from WWI if my memory serves me correct. The second one was from WWI to the Vietnam War, and lastly the remaining was Vietnam to the modern era. I would highly recommend allocating at least 4 - 6 hours for this museum visit. But if you are on a rush, you could probably finish the tour in about 2 hours. read more

Very cool place! If you get a chance to visit take advantage of it! Its free of chrage, they have 3 different hangers of planes split up by the years (WWI and II, Korea/Vietnam, Cold War, Modern) and they have films you can watch that are about 5 minutes long on different exhibits. Helps you get a little extra info/background on what youre looking at! They have guided audio tours, the guides around the building are very helpful and social. Customer service gets 5 stars on its own. A good place for kids and adults alike! Even if planes arent your thing you cant not enjoy seeing planes from the past, especially when they are hanging above your head and are 100-200 feet long! Hope you can check it out! read more

I only rated one star because I had to. Don't come if you don't have a credit or debit card. You won't be able to go to the movies(which, incidently, 8 bucks for a 25 minute minute movie very appropriately called Space Junk? Get real!), you won't be able to buy anything b g in the gift shop(not that you would want to, at those grossly inflated prices. 50 bucks for a hoodie? At those prices you goddamn better be selling them made of casmire, not the cheap polyester cap that they are made from), you can't go on any of the rides, you can't even eat or get something to drink. When I asked an employee what I should do if I get thirsty(I only brought cash), the dumb faced Gomer Pyle wanna be looked at me and simply said, "I dunno." None of the planes were open. I can't stand when assholes like these enforce these bullshit rules and then don't give their customers any solutions on how to follow them if they can't. Here's an idea....why don't you sell loadable Visa cards in your overpriced gift shop so no one starves or dehydrates. Never going back. read more

Amazing museum. Absolutely huge with a ton of displays and historical information. Need a solid 4 to 5 hours just to look around more if you like reading all the facts. The volunteer staff is super friendly and helpful in answering all your questions and providing additional insight on the numerous displays. Best part of all--It's FREE!!! Overall this is the best flight history museum I have attended. They do have a nice size gift shop a theater (for $) and a very basic place to grab a quick bite. read more

Harsh lighting makes it difficult to look at the planes. They "upgraded" the lighting to super bright lights. When you are looking up at an airplane you are also looking up into spotlights that are brighter than the sun. It is a generally dark building but with a low number of extremely bright intense harsh ceiling lights. More diffuse lighting would make it easier to see the planes. I could only stay 30 min before getting a migraine. Every time I walked around a corner my eyes were directly blasted with another "sun." Sunglasses aren't even dark enough and then you can't see the planes as well. I want to go back if they ever make their lighting less painful. read more
