I am very…read morethorough when it comes to wanting to understand everything that goes into the birthing process--including every potential outcome. I know that can be a lot to ask of someone, but I also did a substantial amount of independent research on different topics. Having answers to my questions helped ease my anxiety.
I first met Myk at our town's annual baby expo. I had been pondering whether or not to hire a doula for a long time. My husband is amazing, but he sometimes gets overwhelmed and will either do everything he is supposed to do or freeze up from uncertainty. Since this was our first baby, I was worried he might freeze during labor. Additionally, as a Black woman, we face a reality where we are statistically much less likely to be listened to in hospital settings during birth, which significantly increases the risk of complications. I needed someone I knew would stand their ground for me, which is why I sought doula support for both of us.
Our initial consultation at her office was wonderful. She performed a pregnancy tarot reading featuring beautiful artwork and meaningful insights behind each card. More importantly, she took the time to truly know us as individuals and as a couple. She asked about our personal struggles, recognizing that relationship dynamics can be amplified once a new human being depends on you.
Throughout my pregnancy, Myk educated us on what to expect during each trimester. She helped me manage physical discomfort by teaching me targeted exercises for pelvic pain, lending me an exercise ball with tailored routines for every session, and providing a specialized device for back pain relief. She is remarkably thorough, sweet, generous, and dedicated to ensuring parents feel comfortable and fully prepared for birth.
When I went into the hospital to be induced, my labor lasted 29 hours. Myk checked in periodically early on so she could rest and attend to her own family. Once I reached 8 or 9 centimeters dilation, she remained continuously by my side. I utilized her birth comb and a textured acupressure pillow, which helped redirect pain signals through specific pressure points.
At 9 centimeters, my epidural machine failed. I repeatedly requested assistance, but the medical staff was unable to resolve it promptly. As my pain threshold was exceeded, a nurse dismissively told me, "Well, you still have epidural in your system." At that critical moment, both my husband and Myk fiercely advocated for me, pushing the nursing staff to intervene while I was slipping in and out of consciousness from extreme shock and pain.
Throughout those intense 13 minutes, Myk and my husband continuously grounded me, repeating, "You can do this. Remember to breathe," and coaching me through my panic. Without their presence, I would have been terrified.
Myk's support extended well beyond the delivery room. She conducted postpartum home visits to evaluate my physical recovery and mental well-being--support that is invaluable for someone without an extensive local village. Even now, I occasionally call her when I feel uncertain or anxious about myself or the baby.
If you are looking for a doula who will make you feel secure, educated, and thoroughly supported, I highly recommend Myk. I 100% plan to use her services again for my next birth.
