We stayed in an ocean view room which was well kept however probably 20 years old so a slight refurbishment is due. The balcony balustrades are made from brick with a metal railing on top which blocks the view when you sit down. Other nearby, more modern accommodation uses glass balustrades. The kids enjoyed the indoor heated pool instead of the beach on cool weather days. Don't forget to pack your iPod dock (rooms facilities include a CD player).

I read about it in Lonely Planet and was yearning to stay here and was so happy that we were able to. We saw so many koalas on Grey River Road which runs right behind the park. We also saw roos and wallabys and glow worms after dark. The Otways are a magical place and Kennett River is wonderful. The woman working at the front desk was very nice and quick with a smile. We made our best breakfast of the trip in the camp kitchen. Why don't places in the US have a camp kitchen? Probably because campers in the US would trash it.. I can't think of anything this place is lacking.

That said, although the facade looks a bit tired, the rooms are clean and comfortable and the location is within a kilometre or so to the city's main attractions. My past experience with the Mercure brand has proved the greatest asset is their staff and Geelong does not disappoint. Dinner at the Brasserie was adapted to my crazy dietary needs (without tasting bland) and the range of wine was great. Staff were also friendly and openly accommodating. Parking is outdoors (which makes for a soggy walk if raining) and there are limited leisure facilities but it all depends what you're after. As far as I'm concerned, my stay has been great!

If I'm not paying full price for a room (reward points, last minute/wotif/hotels combined), I expect to be placed in a room that is less than the hotels best. The experience I had at the Mercure Geelong certainly reinforced that view. I won't be returning, and should you have the misfortune to be allocated room 107, I suggest you request being moved. Another tip, parking in the hotel is $18 a day, but it is free overnight on the street out the front, with three hour limits during business hours. The bed is a chiropractor's best friend, and sounds like it is four days older than god. I have not heard springs groan so much in a hotel ever. I didn't notice any roll together, but the mattress felt like the section under my waist had been removed. Even after a number of beers, it was uncomfortable. The next morning we were awoken by the sound of wailing children next door. The walls were seemingly not designed to contain noises. I could even hear the TV through the wall. Poor. My highlight was the bathroom goodies. Room temperature was nice. When we checked out, a man named Phil was rather helpful, so that at least we left on a pleasant note.

But I am sure it also packs out in peak season and for that reason, I recommend travelling a little further to arrive at Cumberland River Holiday Park. The park is situated on a rare bit of flat ground along the mountainous coastal drive, situated next to a beautiful running river and impressive cliffs overhead. Other than the park goers there are no other neighbours apart from the wildlife that inhabits the river, the forest and the ocean. We were greeted by lovely management and as it was the middle of winter we rented a cabin rather than rolling out the swag. The cabin was clean, simple yet functional. There is a gas log fire indoors, an outdoor fire pit and good cooking and bathroom facilities. Due to the remote location, electricity is limited and there was only one powerpoint in the cabin. Definitely stop in here for a few nights to take in majestic scenery, stunning river walks and breathtaking ocean views.
