    Hainam Chicken Rice $10.90
    Kristen M.

I first heard about this place on The Nutrition Guru and the Chef's blog last year and couldn't believe it was just up the road from work and I'd never noticed it. I hightailed it up Charlotte St and was lucky enough to get a table. I got the Beef Noodle Soup and was hooked. I've been back loads of times and have tried the Special Noodle Soup (be prepared for some less than common ingredients in this one!), Spring Rolls, Hainam Chicken Rice, Rice Vermicelli Salad with Grilled Chicken (delicious) and today I had the Combination Noodle Soup. Every dish has been excellent and great value for money. There are about 10 tables inside and it's often full but tables turn over pretty quickly and they also do takeaway. There are often throngs of people waiting on the street for a table or takeaway because it is definitely worth the wait.. It's cash only so make sure you have cold hard cash and a healthy appetite. On my next visit I'm going to try the BBQ Pork Wonton Noodle Soup, is two visits in two days an addiction??

I have been coming here for ages for the noodle soup and vietnamese spring roll and grilled pork salad. They seem to have gotten the mix right of the peanuts, sauce, chilli and flavour so it's not an MSG overkill after you drink all the soup with the traditional Pho! Big highlight is the lemon soda for me, and the spring rolls which you can order on the side for a mere $5.50. Don't let the appearance fool you, whilst the actual restaurant isn't looking like a high class one, with the tables really close together. There is a reason people pack into this place by the droves so much so that they start lining up outside just to get in for lunch or dinner. The waitstaff are very efficient, the food comes out quickly and it's the only place you can get damn good pho for under $10 which is basically unheard of! Try this place out, you won't regret it. I recommend the beef ball and beef noodle soup with the vietnamese noodles (clear and chewy).

I had never heard of this restaurant before until just the other day when a few friends and I discovered it. We were having drinks at a pub in the city and began craving Vietnamese, so we googled "cheap Brisbane city Vietnamese restaurant " on our phones and AJ Vietnamese Noodle House and where we landed. The restaurant did a good job at satisfying our cravings and was definitely good value for money but to be honest, it did not blow me away. The first thing I noticed about this place is the size, it is tiny and could probably only sit 20 people. Thankfully, on a Wednesday night this was not a concern for our party of three yet I can imagine it could get very cramped during a busy lunch time period or on weekends. As we were fairly hungry, we ordered rice paper rolls to share and separate main dishes. I ordered the Lemongrass Beef vermicelli noodle salad whilst my friends ordered the Special Beef Noodle soup and the Seafood Noodle soup. The overall consensus from the table was that this was not the best Vietnamese food we had ever had but a pleasant feed nonetheless. The rice paper rolls lacked minty flavour and my salad was not as tangy as other lemongrass beef salads I have had in the past. The broth in the soups were fairly good but there was something lacking in the flavour. For the price ($9.90-$12.90) though, these were very generous serves and really good value. The place is BYO and there is a bottle shop right across the road so feel free to come here with a six-pack or a bottle of wine. Another important thing to remember- it only accepts cash so make sure to pop by an ATM on the way. AJ Vietnamese Noodle house is the only Vietnamese restaurant that I know about in the Brisbane CBD. It offers cheap food and should satisfy anyone's Vietnamese food cravings.

Proper pho in CBD!!! I came here twice in 2 weeks, it was great. (Just the noodle was a bit too soft) Only 10.9 for a massive bowl!! Recommend it!

This is, by far, the best Vietnamese you'll find in the city. Forget the Asian Fusion restaurants that claim they can 'do' Vietnamese, AJ's is your one-stop-shop for noodle soups and rice paper rolls if you're unwilling to make the trip to Fortitude Valley. This place is tucked away along Charlotte Street, right at the end of Elizabeth St Arcade if you're coming from the Myer Centre direction. It took me some time to muster up the courage to enter AJ's because from the exterior, it looks slightly rundown and unfrequented. But I must have been coming the wrong days, or other people must have made the same discovery, because whenever I stop by AJ's now it's completely packed. I'd advise against going during lunch hours because you'll be waiting for twenty minutes. When you do make it in though, be sure to sit in for a quick noodle soup or snag some take away rice paper rolls; it's the perfect place to stop by if you need to fill up before drinks in the city.

This is the best Vietnamese you'll get in the CBD and at prices you would normally see in the Burbs. Their popularity is evident around lunchtime when their small space is packed to the max and people are queuing outside for a table. I always try to come here a little earlier around 11am or delay my lunch until 2pm to avoid the lunch time crowd. My usually dish is the mixed beef pho noodle soup. This contains the beef slices but also tripe, tendon and beef balls. Oh how I love some gelatinous tendon and I'm pretty sure it's good for you as well. Surely all that gelatine is just seeping with glucosamine and I'll be spared arthritis in my old age. Seriously, their pho soup is the bees' knees. It is rich and flavoursome with some fresh Vietnamese mint, bean sprouts and fresh chillies. I only wish they would be more generous with the tendons..... Service is fast too so I always try to reciprocate and eat quickly then get out so someone else can snag my table. Food this good deserves to be enjoyed by everyone.

The eggroll vermicelli salad. Mostly bean sprouts and lettuce. Eggrolls are not even crispy.

They also do the popular bubble tea and a range of frappes, but when I visited the selection was a bit limited as they were out of quite a few of the flavoured syrups. The two ladies who served me (I got the impression the older one was the mother and the younger one her daughter) were very apologetic and lovely about the whole thing. In the end I settled on the 'peppermint black tea' with 'pearl jelly'. I also picked up a snack, one of their intriguing 'tea leaf eggs', which as the lady described is an egg hard-boiled in tea. While the effect of the tea infusion could be seen in the egg's discolouration, I'm not sure if I could identify the tea flavour on a blind taste. It was yummy though. I'd love to go back and try the noodles and some of their other bain marie treats like their dumplings, whole grilled fish, red bean buns and maybe even chicken feet if I'm feeling adventurous.

It can be a little tricky to find if you're not specifically looking for it or you're catching a 130, but when you do find it you will be rewarded. They have yum cha stuff in the bain maries including various types of steamed buns and they're the biggest BBQ porn buns I've ever had! They also serve noodles, and meal sets including roast duck or pork. As per habbit when at Chinese eateries, I ordered the roast duck meal set and a pork bun. To be honest, I would've been satisfied with just the pork bun it was that big, but it was good to try more stuff. The roast duck came with succulent duck, a huge bowl of rice, steamed vegetables and a bowl of soup for around $13, the duck was so god damn good, saucy and tender and the meal was excellent value. They shop is extremely authentic and it shows in their customer base; only white guy in the entire dining room ;-). If you're on the ground floor of the myer centre and are going to settle for KFC or McDonald's, walk straight past them and head over for an awesome feed that will fill you up. Ps. Unlike a lot of the sushi joins in the city being run by Koreans, this place is Chinese run by Chinese

What attracted me to Noodle Hutt were the attractively presented buffet station with what looked like just out of the wok offerings. I chose a new flavour that I'd never tried before: Balinese Chicken. The flavour is spicy, with visible chilli flakes present in the slightly sweet sauce. I chose the fried rice rather than boring old plain rice. It costs no extra. The chicken was thigh meat rather than breast, which is a more flavoursome cut. I did find myself fishing out some gristle between chews. But flavour is King. The portion size is such that you could easily have some for lunch and come back to it for dinner, or leftovers for the next day. For $8, you really can't complain about the meal size. Options in two main varieties: made-to-order noodles and rice plates. The rice is pretty standard. You can get steamed or fried rice with a smattering of meat and vegetables. Total price including a drink hovers around $10-12. Portions are ample but the rice to filling ratio is a bit skewed to the former. The noodles however are what keep me coming back. First, you'll need to choose either stir fried or soup noodles followed by the type of noodles (I recommend the flat wide noodles). Then you'll pick the sauce from a list of set Asian options and finish off with your choice of meat and/or vegetables. The range of proteins runs from chicken to seafood and the price escalates from $8.50-$10. I haven't been disappointed since I started eating here and have made it a point to come almost once a week. The food is hearty, not too oily and won't break the bank. 4-stars for a great working day lunch option!

For a food-court vendor, the quality of the food is pretty impressive. It is also very reasonably priced as the meals are huge. Happy Noodles doe not look that impressive upon first view; their logo and display photos look like they have not been replaced since they first opened, but like all good Chinese restaurants, what really hits you is the smell. You know, that Chinese food smell that sends your cravings through the roof. I have had a few dishes from here and they do not disappoint. A lot of people seem to order the noodle stir-fry dishes which are indeed very appetising but I particularly like the noodle soup with braised beef dish, mainly because the beef is sooooo tender and packed with flavour.
