Madtongsan II is the bigger member of the Madtongsan family of Korean eateries. Madtongsan (the original) is a little shop in the Elizabeth Street arcade,. You can find Madtongsan II upstairs, just a few doors down from the arcade, above where Skinny's used to be. If you come on a Friday night after 6:30pm, there's a good chance you'll be waiting in a queue to be seated. This place is heaving on a Friday night. Ordering is done by a call button on the table, which I think is a brilliant system. The service is prompt and you don't get harassed by wait staff while you're looking over the extensive menu. There are a variety of complimentary dishes or nibbles for your table, including spicy Kim Chi, a sweet, glazed sweet potato medley and a cold tuna pasta salad. The sweet potato is so delicious. Don't be shy to press the button and ask for free refills. They have Hite beer (Korean beer) on tap too. Be warned, Korean food can be really spicy so believe the menu if it says spicy. They also have plenty of dishes that are not spicy, so there is something for everyone. I love the Bi Bim Bap, which is a hot stone bowl of rice and egg and vegetables. The egg and meat are raw when it comes out, but the bowl is heated so it cooks the egg and meat while you mix it all around. Just be careful not to order the cold bowl version, as my husband did once. Chicken salad is another highlight for me. It's nice to get one and split it between a couple of people for entrée.

I am stoked that I ended up at Nom Nom! The beginning was a little rough. I'm not sure how I felt about the exchange with the lady that took my order. Let's just say I've had better service. I couldn't really decide on what to get; a couple of things caught my eye. In the end, I went with the spicy Korean wings. They took a while to get out, and the lady told me they would, but they were well worth the wait. They were tangy, messy, a little bit spicy (zip might be a better word) and delicious! The wings were gigantic. This is easily one of the fullest meals I've had in town. The wings reminded me of the fried wings you'd find in Korea. I'm sure that sounds like it would be obvious as the place was a Korean eatery, but not all places taste like the country they claim. These wings came with fries as well. The only thing I'd change, aside from the reception was probably less sour cream. A touch was nice, but there was a rather large glob of it and I had excess upon finishing the wings and fries. For anyone wanting to try, and you should, the wings are plenty to fill you up. I almost had to tap out.

Our meals came with rice, miso soup, nanban and all the fixings. $16 for bibimbap in a stone pot and $19 for chicken katsu. Large serves were delicious! However, after giving it another try for dinner one evening, I con quite confidently say that the much touted Korean places in the city (Maru and Madtongsan - I'm looking at you!) have another competitor that can go toe-to-toe. The first thing that separates Noritor is that it's on the ground level and has ample open space for everyone to sit comfortably in the semi-open air restaurant. The second is that Noritor specializes in dol sot bibimbap (stone rice pot). I've tried the beef and spicy calamari options on 2 separate occasions and have walked away satisfied. Particularly with the calamari, I found that there was ample squid and the level of spicy sauce and gochujang (tangy chili sauce) mixes well together. There are the typical shredded carrots, cucumber and sprouts, and I normally take the kimchi side and mix it into the stone bowl as well to give the dish an added kick. Noritor also touts itself as a Korean-Japanese restaurant so naturally I had to try the karaage (fried chicken). It was quite different from what I'm used to since the chicken was drizzled with sweet Japanese mayonnaise and mustard. Typically, the chicken comes with a side of ponzu or is just served dry. However, this interesting little mix of sauces wasn't bad at all! Also, the chicken had the right amount of moisture and was not dry in any sense of the word. Prices were in the normal-higher range for the Korean restaurants. $15 for the dol sot bibimbap and $7 for the karaage. The service was a bit chaotic since it seemed like there was only 1 person running around for the entire place. However, it was fairly well organized and the food came out in a timely manner. Definitely a place to try for lunch and/or dinner. The only downside is that the air conditioning doesn't seem to be turned on since the restaurant is open to the street. Therefore, if you're looking to eat any hot food, you might find yourself sweating a little bit. But otherwise, good food and good environment equals a satisfied customer.

I always say it's pretty difficult to go wrong with Asian cuisine. Sadly, it was here that my…read moretheory was disproven. Chingu is a Japanese and Korean restaurant located in Chinatown. I've eaten a lot of Japanese food in my time, so I decided to try one of the Korean dishes. In their defence, I did decide to be adventurous and ordered something I'd never tried before, so that could have been the problem. It sounded promising; beef, noodles and vegetables in a miso based soup. I was a little disappointed in the portion size; I have become accustomed to the extremely generous portions served at most of the restaurants in Sunnybank and thought Chinatown would be similar. This might not be a fair criticism, as I have a pretty big appetite coupled with the fact that I hadn't eaten lunch that day, so it's likely I would have been disappointed with anything less than the whole cow. I tucked in and sadly I was disappointed again. The flavour was lovely but it just wasn't strong enough for my taste. My dish also came served with a small bowl of rice, as did all the mains. I'm fairly sure this wasn't the correct way to eat it but I improvised and threw the rice in my soup, making a thicker concoction and I'm sure any staff watching me glower in disapproval. I tried some of my Friend's meals, most of whom ordered safer options such as teriyaki noodles. I would say overall about half of the group were very happy with their meals, while the others weren't. We also embarrassingly discovered that the small red circle in the middle of the table is in fact a button that sends a waiter running over to your table.

After 2 visits my husband and I are now firm fans. Even after you get over the novelty of cooking…read moreyour own food on a hot plate at the table, Chingu is great. We chose the all-you-can-eat option for $29.95 a head. There's a good range of dishes to choose from, the soy beef being my personal fave. The only criticism is I could have wished for more vegetable options. Great for a date night or dinner with friends, the cooking and the atmosphere is fun; the staff attentive.
