Portions are massive, so we shared quite a few of the dishes and still came out more than satisfied. We started with skate, which was cooked perfectly, very tender in a spicy tomato sauce - don't see how that could have been any better. Unfortunately the waitress misunderstood our order so the primo (Gnocchetti with Salsiccia and tomato sauce) showed up together with the secondo, a grilled sea bream with a contorno of aubergine with parmesan. No big deal though as we were sharing anyway. The fish was fresh and cooked just fine, and the pasta was very good but perhaps a little light on the meat. The aubergine was as good as it gets, just the right balance of spices, fruity tomato sauce and parmesan. We topped the meal off with a fried pastry stuffed with ricotta and topped with chocolate sauce - a typical Sardinian dessert. Too rich for me to be honest, but when in Rome... We finished the meal with a couple of digestives (very generously poured limoncino and mirto) and a coffee. For the whole meal together with a bottle of water and a half litre of Cannonau (red house wine) we were set back by less than 60 Euro - amazing value for money. I would probably have rated this with four stars given it was my first visit but what caused me to go for five straight away was that I was watching the big table next to ours: 9 Italians feasting on Antipasti Misti that just looked stunning and were very obviously enjoyed by everybody at the table, finished by a gorgeous seafood dish which I saw on the menu but had to be ordered for at least two - something I wanted to avoid so we could try a few more things. Unfortunately I have forgotten the name of the dish... They also had a number of specialties on the menu that are only available on pre-order, including classic Sardinian dishes such as Zuppa Gallurese and Porcettu as well as dishes such as lobster. Their curlighones, another classic, were served grilled with a minty pesto but the absolute pinnacle was the fish. We were two couples and we each got the sea bass (for 2) one Mediterranean style (oven roasted with oil, herbs, tomatoes and potatoes) and the other baked in a salt crust. You'll see a charcuterie board on steroids when you enter the premises which is a part of the meal and includes an unlimited buffet of cured pork, various cheeses, and wine before your main meal. Food: 3 different pasta dishes to follow once you're done stuffing yourself w the charcuterie buffet, and of course the porcedu (piglet) to finish. The pasta dishes were so so, considering they were very basic. Dessert was a piece of fruit and a local dessert called seiadas. Tips: 1. Get there right when they open at 7:30. Lots of dedicated parking but it did get full if you had a later reservation time. Also, if you're there at 7:30 the buffet area will be crowded and you will have to wait in line. 2. Come very hungry, I was freaking stuffed and had to limit the pasta intake to eat the porcedu at the end. 3. Don't wear tight dresses or pants 4. If you book in advance you can get the terrace area.

So, I'll let him off the hook this time since the comparison would not be comparing apples to apples. I had the spaghetti​ and lobster entree, which was good, but wasn't quite what I had imagined. I envisioned that the lobster would be intact, but in fact, the lobster meat was diced into chunks. I also wanted ​a lesser sauce-based​ pasta. However, I must confess that my expectations​ weren't met largely due to the​ misinterpretation of my conversation with the waiter. Although Sardinia is a part of Italy, Sardu is also spoken, and it's different than standard Italian. They also make a nice complimentary flatbread, which is included in the standard coperto (cover charge). The flatbread​ alone would easily have been $15.00 in a nice San Francisco restaurant. It was really good​ and easily could've served four. The cover charges in Italy make so much more sense to me than being "coerced​" into leaving ​a tip upwards of 26% in San Francisco to cover the "expected minimum standard tip" of 20% plus the additional SF Healthy​ Tax charges. Most importantly, I can say, without a doubt, that the service we received at every single restaurant throughout​ Italy would put many San Francisco restaurants to shame. We received good to superior service in Italy, without the outrageous so-called "tips" that are expected/mandated in San Francisco. Skipper is located in a beautiful area with several other restaurants to choose from. Definitely a good choice for pleasurable​ outdoor dining.
