My husband and I love coming to this beach. It's not too far of a drive, the parking situation is always busy but we have found spots right in front. The bathrooms are not available as they are under construction but there are restaurants around the beach like Mcdonalds and a sushi place. The beach is generally clean although I found a grocery bag in the water during our last visit. I picked it up. Can we please keep our beaches clean, people?? The beach itself is always nice and has a great vibe. It's peaceful and I love to see others enjoy it too. Many families and couples come here and enjoy the day with picnics and sand castles. This spot is cute, a lil get-a-way to a beach if you're not trying to go all the way to the city. It's super dog friendly - a beach for them to run and play, or a lil trail for them to walk. Parking is a little small, but we got lucky and got it right in front of the beach. The only set-back is once you're on the trail that leads to a secluded area, it starts to get kind of.. weird. Idk. There's a lot of writing and scripture stuff. There is like random garbage turned into shrines. And multiple shrines with the torso of a mannequin. A huge dog shrine made out of wood. Ok that was cool but like the rest were questionable. You'll see what I mean when you keep walking down the path. I know I should appreciate the art - but not in this area. I think nature and outdoor beaches should be left untouched. I grew up on this beach and I recall being big waves enough to have fun but now there's nothing. I got really sad about that. I like big waves coming in like the ones in Monterrey. It's a good place to lay on the sand and maybe get in also if you're on the Alameda Town Centre side it's good because you get food and shopping area, but i think that side of the beach is weak. I still come here and will keep coming but it's not that great as it used to be. read more

Back home you get about three months of decent weather so i have learned to appropriate the outdoors. Alameda is such a great little town so the beach is fitting for the area. Alameda is very family and pet friendly and so is the beach. Depending on the day parking can be crazy but most days they have plenty of parking. The beach is very cute and on a clear day you can see sf in the distance. On a warm day you have swarms of people but still plenty of space to have your own private spot. So if you're in the area stop and check it out you won't be disappointed. read more

I've lived in Alameda for close to 6 years (on and off), and everyone will always ask me, "why Alameda?" My answer was always, "because it's peaceful, safe and close to work." This is my go-to spot for a good run. At night or during the early mornings, I start running from my place (mid-town), then run along the beach, then head up toward the park, and down to Webster street. Literally covering all of Alameda-- I believe it's about 4-5 miles. I forgot how much I enjoyed running and the freedom it allows. Usually, I practice yoga but I can't stand being in a confined room anymore, although I love the intense sweating that bikram brings. I especially love running on the beach because the sand makes the run that much harder, I can literally feel the burn in my thighs and bum. My motto: no pain, no gain. I've also spent many days just hanging at the beach, journaling, reading, working on my tan, tossing a Frisbee around, listening to music, taking a nap. I mean, it really doesn't get any better than that. The best is at night, when it's dark and you can look across to see the Bay Bridge. I'm not going to lie, it's awesome to live so close to a beach. :) read more

I grew up on the island and though many people don't consider the Alameda Beach so nice, well too bad for them! Where else can you get miles of sand that face the San Francisco Cityscape, as well as the Peninsula? It's sunnier here, warmer here, and the people are friendlier here. If I were on the other side of the Bay, it would be cold, foggy, and there's no beach! And people aren't as nice. There's the opportunity to run, play volleyball, do water sports, have barbecues, parties, and other things. Dogs/Cats must be on leashes so that's good if you have little kids with you. There are ample "human need" pitstop areas as well as water fountains. Great views and great people. Great atmosphere and great amenities. Great, great, great! Don't knock our beach until you come. Oh, and sometimes the water is warm but I never get into it... I'm more of a swimming pool person. And one piece of advise... do NOT fee the raccoons as they will attack you! read more

While this is not remotely as breathtaking as any of the beaches along Highway 1, Baker Beach, or Fort Mason (all of which were my old stomping grounds before we moved to the East Bay).. Alameda Beach is a lovely option for those of us who have been lured across the Bay Bridge and its promise of more space - for less of everything else. Still, this is a beautiful sandy beach with mild waves that can offer you some peace of mind and a pretty view of San Francisco's skyline in the distance... a bittersweet reminder of the place you once called home. AND it's only 27 minutes away from my place........... only 20 more minutes further than I used to be from SF's beaches. ;-) Washington Park is conveniently within walking distance and has a dedicated space for dog owners as well as playgrounds for the tots. read more

Beaches in Northern California are something that we... well - its confusing. Either we do not appreciate them or the beaches themselves are no good. Sometimes, its hard to tell. Nonetheless, after a horrible brunch experience at 3000 Broadway, we found ourselves craving sea water and sand moving through our toes. Given how great the weather was, I'd say that I had a great time at this beach. The lay of the sand is a bit weird as it seems that the shoreline is shallow - causing people to crunch it in closer to other groups; but that's OK - we should be used to other people (unless they smell). Plenty of space for all. Once you run out of dry sand to lay on, there is at least 500 feet of wet sand that the babies and young children run around in. If you're a fan of watching or laughing at babies (no perv) waddle around and frolic among their siblings - this is the place to go. And then you reach the warm but pleasant water where you can swim (no lifeguard on site) to your hearts desire. If you live in the east bay and do not wish to drive to SF or the other way towards Santa Cruz/ Monterey - this is a half decent substitute. read more

OK, this beach has a couple of problems, but.... Guys, it's really not THAT bad! How can you hate on a looooooong stretch of beautiful beach w/ frequent bathrooms & a gorgeous view of downtown SF right across the Bay?? First off, at least Alameda HAS a beach! Second off, what beach doesn't smell at least a LITTLE!?! Third off, the beach is attached to a HUGE park... it doesn't get a whole lot better. My only things are: - Wishing people didn't litter quiet as much (there's the occasional piece of garbage here & there) & since they do I wish the city would do a better job at cleaning. - Not being crazy about the NO bikes -or- dogs on the beach rule (though I'm sure lots of others do this too). - Annoying kids everywhere, but that's the people's fault for not controlling their children, not the beach's. But..... The thing I hate the most (but this isn't their fault).... - Feeling heart broken every time I ride down the beach and see the "Oil Spill" signs blocking the whole thing off. So sad. Stupid people!!! * To sum up: Despite a few minor issues, I'm definitely still a fan of this long and picturesque beach. And I love the view! read more

There is also a huge grassy area at Crown Memorial Beach & Crab Cove. Even on busy days you can find a great space to relax & enjoy. There are picnic tables & cooking grills. Please pick up after yourself. This is my hometown & we really care about our nest, the town of Alameda. read more

This is my favorite Bay Area beach. It has a very gentle slope for about a quarter mile past the shoreline, so there are no big waves and it is safer for little kids. The shallow water means that it stays really warm on sunny days. There is plenty of free street parking, except on really nice summer weekends, and then there is cheap parking at the county park. Their is a constant general breeze out of the north (I think) that makes this a great beach to learn how to kite surf, and if you aren't that adventure then it's a great place to fly a kite or build a sand castle. The long stretch of coastline means that it's never too crowded. There are maintained bathrooms, but they are port-a-potty style. There is also a spigot to wash the sand off your feet. read more

What a hidden gem of a spot! Walking along this beach, I would've never thought such a clean and family friendly place is so close to where I live. Also amazing that it is walkable from a large plaza that has everything you could want: Home Goods, Trader Joe's, Safeway, Daiso, Korean BBQ, etc. I typically get groceries from Trader Joes for a cute picnic and walk over for a nice romantic sunset picnic. 10/10 would recommend to anyone looking for a low key, low effort beach! read more

ALAMEDA BEACH is an excellent urban beach that is configured for strolling, jogging, or for sunworshipping. Because the beach occurs well within the confines of the San Francisco Bay, it is always the case that the surf is minimal. Moreover, extending for about 100 feet into the Bay is a mud flat, exposed only at low tide. Because of the low surf and shallow water and clean sand, Alameda Beach is perfect for children and toddlers. Also, there are not any factories, heavy traffic, or businesses ( aside from McDonald's and Sushi House ) near Alameda Beach. Just beyond the splash line are sand dunes, stabilized by tall grasses, and beyond that, other types of plants that, when in season, have colorful flowers. ANIMALS. Alameda Beach is a good place for animal watchers. Various kinds of birds are always in abundance, and these include pelicans, seagulls, ducks, egrets, and various little birds with beaks like chopsticks. And then, there are the adorable snowy plovers, which have a protected sanctuary just to the north of Grand Avenue. Also found are the maroon colored seahares, occasional rays (the rays are about 2 feet wide) that are sometimes stranded on the shore, mud worms, and molluscs. The molluscs include a type of orange colored conch that is about an inch wide. I have strolled the entire length of Alameda Beach on 100 occasions, and have never seen a seal on the beach, but seals frequntly haul themselves up on the wooden pier located next to the stern of USS Cape Henry, which is docked near USS Hornet. NO DRAMA. This beach is a "no drama" beach. There is not any picturesque light house, and there are no amazing stone formations suitable for landscape photography. You will never find porpoises resting on the sand, in contrast to the situation at the beach at Bull's Island in South Carolina. There are not any seafood restaurants clinging to a creaky wooden pier, situated over the crashing surf. No, no, no. Instead, it is the case that you will find humble sand castles, an occasional volleyball game, and plenty of birds. Actually, there is some drama at this beach. At the northern end of Alameda Beach, you will often find a dozen kite surfers. The kite surfers are a wonder to behold, especially when they momentarily rise into the skies, in response to the urging from a gust of wind. read more

For the longest time, I used to dream about living in San Francisco. The buzz of city life, constant wave of energy, and the allure of public transportation - it always drew me in. But then reality sank in. Because of the cost and pains of living in a closet, I kind of pushed that goal off to the side. To be honest, I'm kind of content with not living in the city because I recently moved somewhere just as amazing: Alameda (yo yo my East Bay pals!). To me, Alameda is the perfect gateway between city and suburb. To the west, San Francisco is just a 15 minute ferry ride away. To the east, you have residential congregations far along the Nimitz. But probably the biggest reason why I love this town is the fact that Alameda is a freaking island! And where there is an island, there's water - specifically beaches. For those of y'all who don't know, Alameda has technically 2 main beaches along the shore: Crown and Alameda Beach. The former is more on the northwest side of the island, and the latter runs south. I paid a visit to Alameda Beach with my girlfriend just yesterday and it was lovely! The beauty of Alameda Beach was that it only took us around 5 or so minutes to get here! All we had to do was drive down Central Avenue and turn right onto 8th. Even with maximum traffic, I doubt it would ever take you longer to get here than it would to reach any of the San Francisco Beaches. Once we got to the beach, we EASILY found parking and quickly made our way to the soft sand. Though it was around 10am, the weather was lovely and not too chilly. Plus, it wasn't crowded at all and so we were able to enjoy a lovely walk along the shore. We saw lots of birds, came across plenty of cool-looking seaweed, and embraced the gorgeous view of SF right across the Bay! Only real downside about this beach was that you'd probably think twice before swimming here. Water is probably a bit too cold, and some parts of the shore felt like marsh. But really, what can you expect? This is not gonna be like Point Reyes or Santa Cruz! This is your neighborhood beach where everyone can get to. So glad I live next to the beach. It gives me a sense of sanity especially in today's reality. I give Alameda Beach a "Nice-su, you can take your parents here and they'll be happy" rating. Have fun and prosper, read more

This place is a GEM. Lots of people walking, running/jogging, even swimming. Plenty of water activities. I can't believe this is in my backyard. Don't get me wrong, it's not like Santa Cruz with the big waves but this place is a stone throw away when you want sand between your toes. They have Kite Surfing rental/lessons at the north end of shoreline. I see lots of kite surfers, SUP(stand up paddle) and wind surfers. I saw someone's review talking about the smell and the color of the water. Obviously this person really is not around the water much. This beach is part of the Bay/Estuary. The water here is the same color as the water further south in the San Leandro Marina area...... It's the Bay trick! And the smell is no different from the San Mateo area. read more

Hot Sunday we care out, a couple years ago it was a dirty dirty beach. They've done a lot to clean it up. This past weekend my kids loved it and we had a bunch of mommies join us with their kids. This is just a longer stretch/the "free" and find your own parking portion. The water is still very shallow and they have two volleyball nets up if that's your thing. I like coming here on my weekends to set up my tent and picnic, and just read and nap. But the water quality is questionable because it is bay water... it's very brackish. But I like it because it's not a super popular beach to go to, so never really that packed. Even during one of the heat waves we suffered through, it was nice here. There street parking, a parking lot and a shopping center's parking lot for easy parking. Easy to walk to from all the parking. There are paths from the street to the beach every hundred yards or so, so its really easy to access. read more

It can get a bit dirty at times with McDonald's being right there and I wouldn't go in the water either, but Alameda beach is a nice place to jog, get your mind off things and enjoy the San Francisco skyline. But it's best at sunset any time of year. Beautiful view of the sun setting over San Francisco. Skip the sand and rent a bike at Peddle Beach, a small bike rental business adjacent to McDonalds. This is the story of how Alameda Beach became a part of my life. It is a cute story of a large pale man and a tiny large headed little woman. The story actually doesn't begin here though... in fact it doesn't even end here, but we'll get to that part later. It was a few years back when I met this young girl who intrigued me so. She was cute, smart and well... really cool. Did I mention that she was cute? Anyway, we had been talking for months and we had met up at the local coffee house to discuss her ailing relationship and her issues with her current partner. We would laugh and she would complain and that's kind of just how it was. We eventually made plans to go out with another one of her friends to see a drag king show in Oakland, it was here that I realized I could not hide my crush for this tiny voluptuously headed beauty. When the burlesque big girl flapped off her top our hands met at the table in the dark and I held tight hoping that my new companion would not notice that I didn't really want to let go. We all walked back to the car, drove to dinner and once again the frustration over this big headed beauties relationship came to bear. A few more weeks came and went before my marvelously massive headed love interest had ended her relationship and became aware of my not so secret crush. We decided to go the beach and hang out that night before returning to my house to watch "Flavor Of Love." It was this night that would make Alameda beach more than some random toxic waste sight. It was here that my love for this lovely woman would come to fruition. It was here that the story of our love would begin. We talked and joked about things sitting there on that cold ass beach for a good 30 minutes or so. I scooted shyly closer and closer to a near spooning position, not really being quite the super ladies man I am known for being. I was just about to move in for the kill when... suddenly I was tackled with a kiss! This beautiful young woman, this Rubenesque headed goddess was kissing me! We rolled in the toxic sand making out for several minutes before we realized that we were covered in this grimy sand. We got up, went to my house just in time to watch our show. We've been together two years now and I just can't help but feel that if it weren't for the magic of Alameda beach, with it's glowing neon McDonald's lighting and toxic waste sand... Well, if not for all that, I just don't know where I would be. In all honesty I really don't even want to think about the alternatives... because in the end it's not how many warning signs line the beach gates of Alameda's water front that make it special, it's the memories of how my loving partner and I got to be the cohesive partners in crime we are today, (because we're still stuck together with grimy sand).
