It's so cute!!!! Great value and with the playground we spent two hours there!! They have sloths!!!! There's a few animals here that aren't even at the Albuquerque Biopark! This zoo was truly an unsuspected joy in the middle of Alamogordo. This isn't a big place, but their display of animals was lovely and they had tons of them. We love zoos and this one is among our favorites. It is nice and laid back, go at your own pace, no bunches of staff pushing you from place to place. This is one of the oldest zoos in the West. You can see everything in an hour. You want to spend more time in the zoo they have a playground for the kids to enjoy. Plus tables for a fun picnic. I LOVE this zoo! It's only $2.50 for an adult admission and it's so much fun! It's a little ridiculous how excited I get to come here. I've been coming here since 2005 and they just keep making it better. The animals seem really happy. At the zoo in Albuquerque, the animals just lay around and don't really pay attention to you. Here the animals will almost interact with you like they want to play. The mountain lion loved my husband and came down from his little tree house to come face to face with him and follow him as much as possible. My husband would even talk to him and we would watch his ears move and his tail wag. The mule deer also would come right up to the fence. Plus it's also a park so the environment is incredible. The Alameda Park Zoo is a small, but fun zoo! Being a small zoo, the admission prices are very fair at $2.50 for me and $1.50 for my 3-year-old nephew! My nephew is not the type to stand and stare at animals, so we walked around the whole zoo in 25 minutes. I personally enjoy the sight of animals and loved that almost all animals were viewable! We arrived about 20 minutes after opening, so some were eating or relaxing in plain sight. My favorite part was the aviary where various birds are walking and flying around. A small pond with tons of koi fish and turtles are also inside. More koi fish and turtles are outside throughout the zoo. Picnic areas and a fairly large playground can be found inside the zoo. There was a birthday party when we left, so parking looked full. Parking is free! I don't think there were any animals that I haven't seen before since I've been to plenty of zoos. I still recommend visiting for a fun, quick activity to support the local zoo! read more

Can't beat the price!! Nice little zoo with a good amount of animals for a small town zoo. Really good monkey exhibits. The reptile exhibit could use some work as far as lighting, but if you can catch a time when the education center is open the kids will have a blast. All the workers are extremely friendly And welcoming. Nice little gift shop in the front. Credit card machine can be a little slow. A lot of the animals are surprisingly active and entertaining. Really Nice shaded playground in sand. From the front to the back is about 0.7 miles. Not overly busy so you can let your kids run free for the most part. Not big enough to need a stroller. We were pleasantly surprised at how great this place is. It's small but it's a small town you shouldn't expect something as large as San Diego. It's small size makes it an easy walk and it only takes an hour or two to go through it all. The price is unheard of and they could easily charge two or three times the current prices. The three of us cost $12.00. They had a wonderful collection of animals from bobcats to mule deer and lots in between. Some of our favorites where the badger, the porcupines and the ocelot. There are plenty of benches if you need a break and covered tables if you bring a picnic. The bathrooms are near the entrance and there is also a small gift shop that sells toys, shirts, and a few snacks such as candy, soda, and slush puppies. read more

Chief Seattle 1854 Alameda Park Zoo claims to be the oldest zoo in the Southwest being founded in 1898 and also claims to be the smallest AZA accredited zoo in the Southwest. In addition they participate in the Species Survival Plan for the Mexican Gray Wolf. Here's a partial list of the animals living here: Mexican Gray Wolf, cougars, black bears, Markhor goats, Capuchin monkeys, Harris hawks, lemurs, capybara, deer, red kangaroos, black swans, bald eagles, river otters, ocelots, coatimundis, emus, coyotes, wolves and turtles. All of the hawks, owls, eagles, and vultures have been brought to the zoo injured or sick. Those animals who can be rehabilitated are released back into the wild. The city cares very much about this zoo and evidence of its improvement and building of new enclosures is evident everywhere. I was unable to find information on their master plan but something big is sure going on there right now. All these improvements take money and time but I believe this zoo is taking good care of its animals now and looking into the future. It's a lovely park also and an ideal place to bring families. And guess what it cost to get in? $1.50. Donations gratefully accepted. While my only complaint is with the small enclosures for the cougars and bears, I was happy to see they were at least 2 of each animal and also structures in the enclosures to address emotional and physical well-being. This is a small but unexpected surprise in a little place like Alamogordo. They have both native species and a few exotics. A decent amount of reptiles and creepy crawlies in the education bldg. And the camel is impressive. Probably my favorite animals that were out today (it was a little chilly) are the wolves. Beautiful creatures, and neat that they are helping with the conservation of them. That said, it is a long, sprawling walk from one end to the other of the whole zoo, and several exhibits along the way were closed, or you could not see the animals. Kinda glad the adult admission is only 4.00. Think if they charged any more, I might be disappointed. Wish they had like a petting zoo area with the goats and camel. I hope they continue to improve this place in the next couple of years. I am sure it's a great place if you're a kid (big, spacious playground area and picnic tables). But as an adult, it felt a little lacking. I'll probably go back, but not anytime soon. read more

This Zoo is definitely a hidden gem! So glad to have found it during a day trip to Alamogordo! The price was more than reasonable, and while the Zoo is small, the exhibits were top-notch and the animals were happy and healthy. By being a smaller Zoo than one would find in a larger metropolitan area, it was busy but not super crowded so I could take my time at each of the animal enclosures. Also being smaller meant you could get fairly close to the enclosures to see all the animals in each enclosure and not just the ones up front. I did appreciate that the Birds of Prey exhibit included birds who were injured by vehicles, humans, and/or accidents and can no longer fend for themselves and would not survive in the wild, so they'll spend the rest of their lives being taken care of by the Zoo while providing an educational experience for the guests. The Walk-Thru Aviary was really neat - the birds paid no attention to me and carried on with making nests and going about their day. The free-range peacock couple paid no attention to any of the guests, they just went about their business! Winnie, the Black Bear, also paid no attention to me, but she did seem to know I was watching her, so she put on a show by standing upright and used one of the support poles to scratch her back! The Lemur seem to want his picture taken and posed for some great shots! The tour ends at the Water Fowl exhibit, which even contained a few Nene Goose, which is the State Bird of Hawaii. If you're anywhere near Alamogordo, take the time to visit the Alameda Park Zoo - you won't regret it! read more

This is a great little zoo if you have young children and just want to wander around for a couple hours. Granted, it is small, but it is all what you make of it. The annual passes and daily entrance fees are very inexpensive and fair for the size of the zoo. Inside you will find a well kept zoo with various animals to include a bear, alligator, lions, tortoise, monkeys, wolves, birds, etc. It is not so large that you and your kids are exhausted by the end of the visit and not too small where it takes only 10 minutes to walk through. There are also a couple barbecue grills and a small park for the kids to play in. My family has an annual pass and we often head to the zoo on the weekends to check in on the animals, have lunch (we bring food into the zoo), and spend some time letting the kids play at the park. If I had to point out a negative it would be the hours during the week days. Currently they close at 5 p.m. and I would love it if they stayed open later (even two or three days a week) so those of us that work during the day could visit in the evenings. Overall it is a good value for the size of the zoo and something fun to do if you want to stay local. read more

This is not your typical city zoo. This is billed as the "oldest zoo in the Southwest". I'm not denying that claim, but it certainly isn't the best zoo in the Southwest. They have a few animals, mostly birds. They have some monkeys and the largest animal is a mountain lion and black bear from what I saw. This is a nice zoo to take the family to for the day because there is a playground and picnic area. If you are looking for a zoo to spend the day in, then you might want to pass, but if you are looking for something to do because you are bored then this zoo will fit the bill. read more

We are from out of town and we are staying in Cloudcroft and we were looking for something to do with all of our kids. We looked online and saw that Alamogordo had a zoo! The prices were super cheap(2.50 for adults/1.50 for kids 3 and older. Not a big zoo but had a good selection of animals and the grounds were well kept. I took my sister and grandmother here to buy some time before meeting other family members at White Sands National Monument and I'm so glad I did. It was like $5 to get us all in, and I would have paid more because it's a nice little zoo. There were lots of different kinds of animals; kangaroos, alligators,wolves, sea otters, and a walk through aviary. Pretty cool for $5 bucks.
