Out Princess Ship was not in town long so we chose Cruin. The other couple had not been. Cruin is a character. He has a great Scottish humor and a passion for his adopted home. Cruin gave us the up close and personal touch we saw that people on big tour buses were not getting. We saw that Cruin was not beholden to certain vendors as others were, dropped off at souvenir shops. We let Cruin know that we wererinterested i seeing bear, salmon, eagles etc. and he delivered. We also learned that Ketchikan is so overrun with tourists that the wildlife could cre less how much you spent to get there, it pretty much wanted to be left alone. We saw how Cruin respected the wildlife whereas the other tours we saw would push boundaries thereby chasing away some viewing opportunities. One of the unexpected spots Cruin took us to was the new library, it really was a small town treat. We saw a peaceful waterfall. Much nicer when it was the five of us until the 20 or so from a big tour van showed up. Cruin is knowledgable, especially about totem poles and carving. The other couple included a contractor/woodworker whom Cruin endeavored to answer all questions and share his wood working tools. The personal, heartfelt touch was perfect and the four of us were very happy we chose Cruin. Our only complaint was that Cruin was so knowledgable and accomidating we cut it close getting back to our ship on time. Thanks agan Cruin

Perfect Cruin was…read moreabsolutely amazing! Recognized him immediately by his kilt. So much fun and he really knows the local history. We were both entertained and educated at the same time. The best part is that he goes out of his way to do EXACTLY what you want and also knows how to take you to places where most tourists don't get to go. You won't be disappointed!

We were so pleased with her tour! She is a local and of Tlingit heritage. Her perspective was unique and she shared some of her rich family history with us. We also loved having the ability to make special requests to see things - something that we couldn't do on a bus tour. At one stop (looking for bears) a busload of people were starting to load and a lady asked us how much we paid for our private tour. We told her. She said she wished her and her husband would have booked with Lisa. While our private tour was a bit more expensive than their excursion booked through their cruise line, she said their bus tour was really disappointing. On the other hand, Lisa knew where to take us, went off script to let us look for bears and took us to very interesting local places. We saw a whale spout beside the road and were able to turn around and watch it. We went and left at our pace. She brought her native family drum and sang a couple of Tlingit songs for us. She explained the significance of the totem poles and talked to us about her family. Some still live in a very traditional manner. She knows all the local people and is well known and liked. I highly recommend contacting Lisa and booking a 3 hour tour if you prefer a more individualized experience.

She kept promising to refund me and to this day I have not received any reimbursement from her. I have emails saved of all communication with her to prove this statement as true.

The two hour tour was just the right amount of time for the limited amount of time we had available. The vessel was perfect for our small group (I think it seats up to six) and offered both the warmth of an enclosed pilot house and seating area and good sized decks to let the wind blow through your beard. The water was incredibly smooth today and the weather just absolutely beautiful. Our Captain, Doug was awesome! Incredibly friendly and very knowledgeable about the area the scenery around us and offered suggestions for places for lunch post tour and activities for future visits. A real class act! While we didn't get to see any bears this particular trip for they had already had their fill of Salmon with it being towards the end of the season. We did get to see several harbor seals, bald eagles, cormorants and incredibly beautiful and serene landscapes including small secluded harbors and beautiful misty waterfalls. Well worth it in my book. There was an option to add extra hours to the trip and had I had more time I'm sure I'd have done so. Next time I'll be able to stay longer. I promise I'll be back. Thank you for making our spur of the moment day trip so enjoyable. Looking forward to returning soon.

It's pretty clear they cater to cruise ship passengers, and they're always very helpful and eager to answer any questions. They've got lots of info on local tours, shops, restaurants, and attractions, so it's a great place to get your bearings when you first arrive. One of the best things to grab is a city map. Ketchikan isn't very big, but they offer some easy self-guided walking tours that make exploring a lot more fun. Plus, there's just something nice about having a paper map in hand. It's practical and makes for a great little souvenir afterward. The staff are always friendly and easy to chat with, and over the years, they've pointed us toward a few things we might've missed otherwise. There's also a wide range of brochures you can flip through if you want to plan on the spot. They have free restrooms and an ATM on site, too. If you're looking to book something last minute, their Tour Center (open May through September) is a really convenient option for same-day tours. They also have visitor centers at Berth 2 (open year-round) and Berth 3 (seasonal), so you'll likely run into one no matter how you arrive. Overall, it's a great and helpful first stop to help you make the most of your time in Ketchikan.

I didn't buy any authentic-looking totem poles but found some stuffed animals replicas of Alaskan wildlife that I knew a young relative would enjoy holding and snuggling with.

We walked casually through the forest while learning about the surrounding area and wildlife. We saw some eagles on our walk and eventually came upon the boardwalk near the salmon hatchery where we happened upon a black bear with its recent catch of salmon. After being mesmerized with the bear we walked further on the boardwalk to spy a ton of eagles perched in the trees and along areas in the low tide. Many full grown and juvenile eagles were spotted. Next we headed to watch a totem being carved them onto the blacksmithing area. Because we spent extra time with the bear we had a tad less time to wander around the grounds before boarding the bus again and heading back to the port. I thoroughly enjoyed the educational aspects of the excursion as well as the live appearances from the wildlife. It was an intimate tour with 11 of us total plus Ella. We really enjoyed the beautiful day outside along with wildlife spotting!

Although we chose this tour because of the connection to the TV show "The Deadliest Catch", I do not think knowledge of that show is necessary at all to enjoy the experience. Rick really cared that we have a great experience while in Ketchikan. The Honda Odyssey van was spacious enough for the four of us. Rick had pairs of binoculars and waters for us. He took us to a place to see black bears catching and feasting on salmon. We saw Bald Eagles and just missed seeing an orca. While on Creek Street, a black bear emerged from under a building to eat blueberries and huckleberries. We ate a few too after the bear moved on. Rick took us to a totem pole park and gave a great tour and history of totem poles. We took many tours while in Alaska and this was by far the most enjoyable one. You can't beat having a private tour with a guide who is proud of his town and wants you to have a great experience.
