PLEASE DO NOT SEND YOUR CHILDREN TO BUILDING BLOCKS PRESCHOOL, INC! My initial impression was that…read morethe center, although small and unprogressive, would be a good nurturing environment. I felt comfortable with the staff members but the owner/director was very abrasive and unfriendly to both children and parents. I even witnessed a couple of instances were she was verbally abusive to her staff. She is a bully and targets certain children for excessive time-outs and isolation. I started to notice that my children, who always loved to go to "school", would become anxious and upset when it was drop off time. Around that same time the assistant director left abruptly and the center became noticeably under-staffed. The final straw came when she insisted that I get my TWO-YEAR-OLD tested for ADD or find another center. I was shocked to find that someone who touts more than a decade of experience in early childhood education was unable to distinguish the "terrible two's" from a clinical diagnosis that usually is not detected until age five. When my husband, who holds a Master's in Counseling and has served as an elementary school counselor, called to discuss the matter Ms. Susie hung up on him. Needless to say this woman is unprofessional and tries to use children's behavior as a scapegoat for her short comings as a child care provider. It was not surprising to us that during our search for another center other providers were aware of Ms. Susie's antics and wondered how my children lasted as long as they did. Steer clear of Building Blocks. It is an uncaring, hostile environment.

Don't let all the toys and the outdoor playground fool you…read more My child told me that one of the teachers hit her on her second day of school. I addressed the matter after she stated the second time that the teacher Miss G hit her hand. These people have an incredibly aggressive vibe, if you haven't noticed, pay attention moms! I asked the director if I could see video footage of those two dates where she said she was hit in school and although they had cameras they did not have video footage of the 1st incident and when I looked at the video footage of the day on the second incident, there was a one-hour timeframe that was missing in the footage before she got into trouble and had to stand close to Miss G. They denied there was missing footage when I showed it to them! And when I said I want a report of this incident the director scoffed at me and said what for? This school needs to lose its license!

All of the staff are equipped to love, nurture, and shepherd each child with individualized care. They treat the children like family and I adore that! My now 6 year old started attending ALC when he was just a year and a half. During his time at ALC, the teachers groomed him and made sure he was prepared for school. Once he entered preschool in the school system, the teachers there were impressed by how much he already knew! I currently have a two year enrolled at ALC and the teachers are amazing working with him! He uses sign language during mealtime, sing songs and fluently saying words. My hats off to the staff of ALC, I don't know what I would do without you all!! If I were to have another child, that child would also be attending ALC!!

DO NOT SEND YOUR CHILDREN HERE!!!!!…read more I sent my both my daughters here when we were referred by a friend of my step mother's and I knew in my gut something was not right. The owner, Sandy Graham, runs the pre-school program and then switched over to a camp program during the summer....all run from her private home in Kill Devil Hills. At first, I only sent my oldest daughter who was 5 at the time because she had missed the cut off date to start Kindergarten that year. I thought that everything was fine at first, but then immediately noticed that the teacher, Sandy, would be gone lots of days when I showed up to pick up my daughter and she would leave the children in the care of her elderly mother who does not speak a word of English, Spanish only!!!! I cannot tell you how many times I have walked in just to here her screaming at all the children who do not understand what she is saying at all. My oldest is very well behaved, so I have never had to worry about her getting in trouble at school, however my 3 year old is a different story. When my oldest finally started Kindergarten, it was time to send my 3 year old to pre-school on her own. I was already terrified at the fact that she is so little and a loose cannon at that so I was worried about her getting in trouble. She would come home complaining of being put in time out which is perfectly reasonable if a child is acting out and so i thought nothing of it until she started complaining that Sandy's elderly mother would grab her by her arms and hurt her. It was until my oldest got out of Kindergarten, that I was able to send them together for the summer camp program. Sandy drives all the children around in a big van on a day to day basis running her errands and doing whatever she so chooses without notifying parents at all!!! I have told her numerous times in the past that I needed to be notified anytime my child was being taken somewhere, to which she says ok and of course, but then still tells you nothing about where they are. After one week of sending both my children together for camp, my oldest told me that Sandy had took all the kids to children's festival in Manteo, NC on June 19th 2019. My 3 year old immediately spoke up and said she did not get to attend the festival because she was sleeping in the van. My oldest then confirmed for me that Sandy had left my 3 year old daughter along with 3 other children asleep in the van with the power off and the windows up while she took all the other children to do the festival activities. It wasn't until another person seen my child crying inside the van that Sandy came back for them. By that time my 3 year old had escaped from her carseat and had climbed into the driver's seat desperately trying to get out for air. My oldest said when Sandy and the other children returned to the van, it was very hot and her little sister was sweating and crying. I immediately tried to call Sandy after I was told this and she ignored all of my attempts to reach her. Later that evening my 3 year old went on to tell me that Sandy has been smacking her in her mouth every time she gets in trouble. At this point I was furious and seeing red. Sandy finally called me back the next morning and actually had the nerve to admit leaving my child in the van on a 90 degrees summer day but said the van wasn't hot. She also said she doesn't smack my daughter in the mouth but only taps her in her mouth. IS SHE SICK IN THE F***ING HEAD???? I will never send my children back there again to her or her abusive mother. Do not pay this woman to watch your children. They will just be left with someone who they cannot communicate with and neglected. There is so much more I could go on to say about this woman and her fraud of a business. Their driveway is filled with new cars, they own two different three story houses, and always have maintenance crews working around their house all because she lives off the money trusting parents pay her to actually take care of their children. DO NOT SEND YOUR CHILDREN HERE!!!!

What makes the YMCA special is not just the facilities or programs, but the people. Throughout the past year, I have met many YMCA staff members who genuinely care about the families they serve. Their kindness, encouragement, and willingness to share their own parenting experiences and challenges have meant a great deal to me. Their support has helped me navigate both the joys and difficulties of raising a child, and I am deeply grateful for their positive influence. As a mother of an only child, one of my greatest concerns has always been making sure my son has opportunities to socialize, build friendships, and develop confidence. Through the YMCA, he has made friends, participated in activities, and enjoyed wonderful summer camp experience. The social connections and sense of belonging he has gained are invaluable, and I plan to continue enrolling him in YMCA programs in the future. At the same time, I have become actively involved in YMCA fitness classes myself. These classes have improved not only my physical health, but also my emotional well-being and overall outlook on life. The encouragement, community, and positive atmosphere have helped me become stronger, healthier, and happier. The YMCA has had a profoundly positive impact on our entire family. My son has grown socially and emotionally, I have experienced significant improvements in my physical and mental well-being
