More like a Hostel than a Hotel... Front Desk Staff was…read morefine. Rooms were modern, bathrooms large. Beds were foam on slats.... a bit hard for this gal. To say it was clean might not have been accurate... the bathrooms were clean, the floors were not. They ran out of towels on our second day... and yes we were reusing what we could. The cleaning staff was quite irritable.... but the seemed overworked. The breakfast had a large selection of pastries, meats, and bread... but lacked the freshness we had seen previously. The coffee sucked, one had to stand at this one-and-only machine and run thru several cycles to get a medium cupful. The grounds were not fresh. The new guests would become quite irritated, but they would find out quickly that this was the only way. We booked late for this area, many Italians run for the mountains for the month of August. I was just glad to get to experience these gorgeous Southern Alps. Clean and dry... we were!

First time visitors to the Dolomites, prepare to spend your first 72 hours walking around, mouth…read moreagape, in utter awe. The scenery here is magnificent. In the summer months, an impossibly green alpine meadow provides a front lawn while karst towers jut out from the earth providing a dramatic backdrop. This charming little rifugio has been in the same family for decades, a maternal warmth and care permeates the experience. The aproned proprietor - smiling, adorably plump, and eager to feed - must have written the book on hospitality for Italian grandmothers. There are few frills: rooms are dormitory-style and hot showers are €4.50, but the place is well kempt and comfortable. Private rooms are available at a premium €45/night and book quickly in the summer months, so book ahead - they speak workable English. Location-wise, the rifugio provides a great base for ascending the Cinque Torri (Five Towers) as well as Averau's short ferrata. (Have a look at my other reviews should you be interested in ferrata or climbing in the area.) Also of note, this is one of the easiest rifugios to drive to should you have a rental car. The rock climbing does not get much better than Cinque Torri. And the rifugi do not get much better…read morethan this one. We knocked out a couple of good climbs but the weather was coming in so we retired to the hut just in time to have a beer and some excellent pasta while the thunderstorms rolled in. the staff were all welcoming and helpful. They can obviously recognize a hungry climber. The gnocchi with pesto were top quality for any venue, let alone a litthe hut in the Dolomites.

Rifugio Col Gallina was the third overnight stop on our southward trek of the AV1 in the Dolomites…read more We reached it on our toughest day so far, after climbing through the Forcella del Lago pass, followed by the climb to the top of Lagazuoi mountain. Thankfully there was a cable car down the steep cliffs to Falzarego Pass, where the rifugio was situated. As it would turn out, Col Gallina was my least favorite hut on our entire trek. Why? It started with the gruff, unfriendly welcome. It continued with the overall setting, which was not ideal - being on a main road in this busy, popular valley. Despite their large deck, there was zero shelter offered from the hot sun. (We were able to find one shady niche in later hours). To the east we had view of a large parking area that was functioning as a temporary RV park - listening closely, we could hear the murmur of portable generators. (I should confess that we had been spoiled by previous rifugios in much more pastoral settings.) On the plus side, we could turn our heads and view the gorgeous plateaus and peaks to the south (where we were headed the next day). Despite these complaints, I can't really give Col Gallina a negative rating, for a few reasons: Our room was actually very nice; the food was pretty good; and the staff became friendlier over time. Rifugio Summary: - Setting: Utilitarian building in a busy, touristy area. - Rooms/dorms: Very nice - Food: Good - Potable water: Yes - Wi-fi: strong (plus cell service)

We booked a room in-person and Renado gave us a full rundown of the hotel operations including breakfast details, nearby public parking options, how to get in after-hours, etc. The room was stellar and offered views of the Cortina church bell tower. Check-in and check-out were super easy and the experience was all around exceptional. Highly recommended.

The Post Hotel is everything we wanted for our stay in San Candido-- and more. The hotel is clean, modern, inviting, centrally located, charming, quiet, and very comfortable. The staff are equally as welcoming, charming, friendly, and will do anything to make your stay perfect. One of the staff members noticed we arrived late on our first night and although the kitchen was "closed", they arranged to get us a hot meal- without us even saying/asking anything! THAT is service! The parking was perfect for keeping our car safe and snow-free during our stay. It was very easy to go in and out of the parking structure and we never had an issue finding a good spot. It was worth the extra few euros. The food at Post Hotel is spectacular. The morning spread is more than enough to sustain you for your following daily activities. The dinner service is delicious, surprising, and gourmet. While we usually like to explore and try new places to eat- we could not help but eat at the hotel multiple times during our stay. It was just too good and they rotate their menu each night. We loved having a designated table just for us for each meal- no need for reservations! The wellness area is relaxing, rejuvenating, and a great way to unwind after a full day of activities. Everything is clean and very well taken care of. The towels are always stacked high and the spa refreshments are always full. We spent quite a bit of time in the wellness area. The spa services are also great. I had two different massages and a customized facial during our stay. Again, everything was clean, modern, and the spa services were world class. I would highly recommend added this to your list of to-dos for your stay at Post Hotel. The room was large, accommodating, and had a great view of the mountains. The bed was large and comfortable as were the sheets and pillows. While we didn't spend much time there, the porch was lovely and if it were warmer, we would have spent more time out there. The tub was HUGE. The shower is also very large (unlike a lot of other hotels in Italy). The water temperature and pressure was perfect. My favorite parts of the room: the heated bathroom floor and towel rack. It's easy to warm up, and dry out after a long day of skiing with that touch. We will definitely be back- perhaps in summer next time- to explore some hiking in the area. We loved our stay at Post Hotel.

They were able to give us personalized recommendations for hiking in the area and can provide you with gear for the day (backpacks, poles, etc.) with no cost. It was my birthday while we were here and they gave me a gift and a card at the breakfast table. They also worked with my boyfriend to decorate the dinner table! They definitely made me feel special. The breakfast is incredible and the views are great. The sauna was also an incredible and relaxing experience. Would definitely come again!
