The cutest hotel with a fantastic view from their panoramic terrace. Our room also had a little balcony. The hotel is located farther into Monterosso and up a bit of a climb - they can reserve a taxi for you which picks you up from the train station if you do not wish to lug your luggage up the entire way. There are only 2-3 taxis in Monterosso (costs 15 euros each way). Wait to buy your Cinque Terre pass and Via Dell'Amore ticket - they can help you purchase what you need here for up to half off! We also did the pasta, pesto, and tiramisu class here which was a lot of fun! Would definitely recommend it. It is 120 euros per person and has to be paid in cash - there are several ATMs nearby. We were here for the first day of the Lemon Festival (mid-May) so all the shops had lemon themed displays up! read more

My husband, my brother in law and sister in law and I stayed at Hotel Villa Steno for two of the most amazing nights in May 2025. The hotel is beautiful with amazing views out to sea. The rooms are very comfortable and have all the amenities you need including a terrace with a sea-view. The owners, Matteo and Carla, as well as the entire staff, are the best I have ever experienced. They are all kind and welcoming. They anticipated our needs by giving us information about the trains and hiking among villages in Cinque Terra. My brother in law wasn't feeling well and stayed at the hotel the first day. Carla called a doctor and also checked on him throughout the day. We all took a cooking class with Carla and it was fabulous. We made tiramisu, pasta, pesto and branzino. She was so patient with our lack of skills and made it fun. We all felt we might be able to do these recipes at home. We ate the delicious meal on an upper terrace with an even more amazing view. We were in Italy for two weeks and this was my favorite hotel. THE BEST! read more

One Of The Best Hotel Experiences..... My wife and I decided to spend our annual vacation in 2023 by driving around parts of Italy starting with a week in Cinque Terre. Since the only 1 of the 5 towns which allows cars is Monterosso Al Mare, that's where we made our base camp. After lots of research on hotels, we chose Villa Steno. It was the best choice. Here are the pros (many) and cons (barely one): Pros: - All the great things mentioned by other reviewers are true: Accommodations, views, breakfast and hospitality - Intangibles are what separate Villa Steno from almost every other place - The hotel, owned by a couple, Matteo and Carla, offers an unbeatable combination of helpfulness, warmth and a sense of what you might need before you realize it - We had Room 15 and took advantage of the view with lunch on the patio 3 days - Breakfast was buffet style where the quality and variety were second to none - If you're able, do not miss the pasta and pesto cooking class with Carla - Carla is a force of nature. Involved in everything with a smile, passion and spirit. Matteo is a bit more laid back, but the foundation of the business. Together, they felt like family. - The staff was great. Ines is a great front office person and all-around helper while Dacaveline manned the kitchen at breakfast with energy and charm to spare. Con: - It's minor, but gets mentioned by other people. To see those great views you need to be on a high hill.....and to get up that hill you need stairs. Lots of them. I thought it was a great way to stay in shape, but my wife has 2 troublesome knees so she took things a little more slowly. Villa Steno is not the fanciest or most extravagant hotel you can find, but we were very sad to leave. read more

We loved this hotel! It's in a great location and its small size made it more personal and charming. We liked our room which had a little private yard with a table and chairs with a view of the town and sea. The staff (Matteo, Carla and Ines) are extremely nice and attentive; they provided very helpful information about how to get around Cinque Terre and things to do there. Their food and breakfast buffet are excellent! The highlight of our trip was the awesome cooking class they offered on how to make pasta and pesto from scratch - it was a lot of fun and we got to take home the aprons and recipe booklet. The class was followed by a delicious meal of the pasta we just made along with fish which they served to us on the outside terrace overlooking the town at sunset. Such a wonderful experience! In addition, they sent us detailed information in English and Italian that we could give the drivers we hired to get to and from Monterosso; they even made themselves available to the drivers to call them for help if needed. Our family had a wonderful weekend in Monterosso at Villa Steno. Ignes was wonderful in all her help with booking the room & transport, making activity recommendations, welcoming us and suggesting the cooking class that was a highlight for our teenage daughters. Carla and Mateo were amazing hosts for the cooking class, breakfast and so much more. The rooms were wonderful with large patios amazing views and comfortable beds. The location is perfect to be up away from the main noise of quaint south Monterosso but easy walking everywhere (with just a few stairs). We hope to be back soon! read more

One of the best hotel experiences you will you will ever have. This was the #1 rated hotel on TripAdvisor for Monterosso al Mare, so my girlfriend and I were only able to book it for just one night. From the moment you arrive, the staff is completely helpful and friendly. They've got wi-fi. The entire property seems incredibly fresh, new and clean. The rooms are very generous for Europe, with a large bed and even a fainting couch. They had a fridge, too, which was nice. Our room even had a private terrace with a view of the Mediterranean sea, a table with four chairs and an orange tree. The breakfast they serve was the best I had during my entire stay in Italy. Delicate lemon and chocolate cakes, delicious juices, cappuccino and more. Protip: If you're arriving at the train station, you can take a very short taxi ride to the hotel. The staff can arrange them to be there to pick you up. Or if you've got the energy, you can drag your bags uphill to the hotel. It's maybe a 10-15 minute walk. On the way back to the train station, gravity does the work for you, so no taxi is necessary. After a day of strenuous hiking, my brain was so fried that I forgot some clothes in the room. The hotel shipped them back to me in America without additional charge. WHAT? Seriously unparalleled service. I want them to be my best friends. I fell in love with the Cinque Terre in large part because of the kindness and care of the staff at Hotel Villa Steno. If you're traveling there, this should be your absolute first choice. read more

It's impossible not to love this hotel. The rooms themselves are wonderfully modern and very well-appointed; I would think this should be considered at least a four-star hotel. And many of the rooms have private balconies or even gardens overlooking the water. Our room had an entire garden with two lounge chairs and a table for four. The hotel offers free complimentary breakfast each morning that is brought to your room -- you just send an email listing whatever you would like to eat and the time you'd like it to be delivered. We ate breakfast each day in our private garden, looking out at the Mediterranean, and it could not have been more blissful. The other thing that makes this hotel wonderful is the husband/wife couple who runs it, Carla and Matteo. They are such lovely and charming people, and they seem to genuinely care about their guests and want them to have a wonderful time. We signed up for a cooking class with Carla one night we were there. She taught us how to make pesto the traditional way (with a mortar and pestle) as well as how to make fresh gnocchi. She and Matteo then cooked our pasta for us, and we ate it with branzino and tiramisu that they had prepared. They poured prosecco liberally throughout, followed by their homemade limoncello (from the lemon trees at the hotel). The whole experience could not have been more fun, and the food was fabulous. This is the #1 hotel in Cinque Terre for very good reasons. Not to be missed. read more

Wonderful room with a true balcony (table and chairs). Breakfast was really good and friendly staff everywhere! Roof top terrace was amazing. Good selection of wine, beer, spirits that they bring to your room or terrace on request. I'd be remiss to not mention the shower... most spacious, best water pressure and rain shower head. It was amazing after a few few small showers in other parts of Italy. Must go! If you're bringing luggage you DON'T want to haul up stairs or hills, call hotel ahead of time to arrange a taxi to pick up your luggage and take the nice stroll on foot. My whole family loves this place, this was our fourth visit. Matteo and Carla are fantastic hosts and we feel like family when we arrive. The setting is beautiful, it overlooks the town of Monterosso and it's the perfect place to have a glass of Prosecco and watch the boats come and go. The breakfast Carla serves is great, and because of the protocols they served it in our room (See pic). We were celebrating our anniversary and they went out of there way to make it extra special (again pic). A special note to mention Inez. She saved us the night our dinner plans fell through. She shared with us a local's trick. Our dinner was great. I felt honored she would share the secrets of a local with us. I am already looking forward to going back! read more

Stayed here for 3 nights and loved it. We had a balcony room which was awesome. We spent a lot of time hanging out on the balcony with the nice view and a glass of wine. The room is extremely comfortable with AC and wifi. We loved the breakfast, especially the croissants with lemon filling. The homemade lemon marmalade was also fantastic, I wish I bought some to bring home. They provided a nice welcome packet with train/boat schedules as well as hiking maps. I found it very useful. Yes, it's true there are a fair amount of steps to get up the hill to the hotel but I loved staying on the hilltop. May not be right for folks that don't like to walk up hills. The husband and wife that run this place are so friendly and I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone coming to this area. They really go out of their way to make you happy. read more

The two owners of this hotel are amazing, they could not have been more helpful to my husband and I on our honeymoon stay. They upgraded our room to a honeymoon suite with a beautiful balcony looking out at the water and the center of the town. They also helped us to book restaurants on short order and did it all with an amazing attitude and smile on their faces. Of course the surrounding town is spectacular and it seems like any hotel would be great--but the location just a 5 minute walk uphill from the restaurants and shops and other hotels allows you to enjoy a quiet room and awesome views. Went on vacation for two weeks to Italy and Amsterdam. This was definitely the best overall accommodations. The breakfast was very good - eggs and bacon and pastries and orange juice and coffee. The rooms were very clean, and the scenery was amazing with a view to the Mediterranean. The wi-fi was the best of all the hotels, and they had some English speaking channels on the TV. The staff was very helpful. The only downfall was the steps leading up to the Hotel. Not for the faint at heart, however, all of Cinqueterre is like that. So, we were called for a special mission in Milano to take care of some challenging Mafiosa types. M, F, and I decided to spend a couple of nights in Cinque Terre first. Villa Steno is absolutely fabulous because of one reason: the family-style, high-quality service here. Absolutely fantastic. Feels like you're staying at your Aunt and Uncles' house. The rooms are small but clean. The bathrooms are European and "efficient". The view is fantastic. We pranked F and almost had her drink out of the bidet! I jest, I jest, F would hurt us badly. Hotel provides breakfast and wonderful homemade cappuccinos and espressos. They give you a free drink as part of your stay; you can even have a Mcallister (12 though). Small touches. But, as I said, the best part of it all was the service. Felt like your favorite Aunt and Uncle were taking care of you. Just family-style, meticulous, homey service. This is something that the Ritz, Four Seasons, St. Regis, Fairmont wish they could replicate but just can't. read more

We stayed at Hotel Villa Steno on a recent trip to Cinque Terre and absolutely loved it! The hotel is conveniently located- a 15 minute walk from the train station and easily accessible by taxi if you have luggage. Ten minute or less walk to many restaurants and shops. The rooms are spacious and clean and we had a gorgeous view from our balcony. Service was also incredible- hotel owner Matteo provided us with ample information about the area upon arrival as well as a complimentary glass of local wine. Great complimentary breakfast buffet with local ingredients and home cooked dishes. We also left an important item in our hotel room and Matteo actually contacted us about it before we even noticed it was gone, then shipped it to our next hotel in Venice free of charge. Villa Steno is by far the best possible location for Cinque Terre vacation spot. The hotel overlooks the lovely old village of Monterosso Al Mare with stunning ocean views, both from the balcony of our room (where I had morning coffee at my table with my husband each morning and a glass of wine at sunset). There were the same views for breakfast - which is first class cooked by Carla, Matteo's wife. Its family owned and that shows up in how much they care about your stay. Matteo and their staff could not have served us better - whether its carrying our luggage from the steps to our room, giving us local tips and hiking instructions, advising us to the train information for our next trip, serving us a welcome glass of wine to sip overlooking the city and ocean from their high top garden terrace...the shower that felt like heaven after hiking all day... We had decided that the price was worth paying and indeed, we were right...this hotel and their owners and staff made our top memory of our trip to Italy. Wow, wow, wow! If you ever come to Cinque Terre you must stay at Villa Steno. Before we even arrived they emailed us to see if we wanted to reserve a taxi to the hotel from the train station. There are 3 taxis and they arranged everything. When we arrived they were out front welcoming us. Inside we were offered a welcoming cocktail or soda and given a map to the town square and restaurants. They even made sure we knew about the laundry offerings. The room is something else. We Just visited Rome, florence and Venice and this room was by far the best. Spacious, comfortable and the bathroom is new and huge. But the real treat is the balcony view with the ocean. Amazing. The breakfast is terrific but the real treat is homemade lemon and strawberry jelly. The lemons are grown right outside our window. We bought a jar of the lemon to take home. You don't want to miss out on this stay! read more
