Making pesto from scratch - so fun to learn in their awesome class!

We loved this hotel! It's in a great location and its small size made it more personal and charming. We liked our room which had a little private yard with a table and chairs with a view of the town and sea. The staff (Matteo, Carla and Ines) are extremely nice and attentive; they provided very helpful information about how to get around Cinque Terre and things to do there. Their food and breakfast buffet are excellent! The highlight of our trip was the awesome cooking class they offered on how to make pasta and pesto from scratch - it was a lot of fun and we got to take home the aprons and recipe booklet. The class was followed by a delicious meal of the pasta we just made along with fish which they served to us on the outside terrace overlooking the town at sunset. Such a wonderful experience! In addition, they sent us detailed information in English and Italian that we could give the drivers we hired to get to and from Monterosso; they even made themselves available to the drivers to call them for help if needed. Excellent hotel ~ I highly recommend it!

Our family had a wonderful weekend in Monterosso at Villa Steno. Ignes was wonderful in all her help with booking the room & transport, making activity recommendations, welcoming us and suggesting the cooking class that was a highlight for our teenage daughters. Carla and Mateo were amazing hosts for the cooking class, breakfast and so much more. The rooms were wonderful with large patios amazing views and comfortable beds. The location is perfect to be up away from the main noise of quaint south Monterosso but easy walking everywhere (with just a few stairs). We hope to be back soon!

One of the best hotel experiences you will you will ever have. This was the #1 rated hotel on TripAdvisor for Monterosso al Mare, so my girlfriend and I were only able to book it for just one night. From the moment you arrive, the staff is completely helpful and friendly. They've got wi-fi. The entire property seems incredibly fresh, new and clean. The rooms are very generous for Europe, with a large bed and even a fainting couch. They had a fridge, too, which was nice. Our room even had a private terrace with a view of the Mediterranean sea, a table with four chairs and an orange tree. The breakfast they serve was the best I had during my entire stay in Italy. Delicate lemon and chocolate cakes, delicious juices, cappuccino and more. Protip: If you're arriving at the train station, you can take a very short taxi ride to the hotel. The staff can arrange them to be there to pick you up. Or if you've got the energy, you can drag your bags uphill to the hotel. It's maybe a 10-15 minute walk. On the way back to the train station, gravity does the work for you, so no taxi is necessary. After a day of strenuous hiking, my brain was so fried that I forgot some clothes in the room. The hotel shipped them back to me in America without additional charge. WHAT? Seriously unparalleled service. I want them to be my best friends. I fell in love with the Cinque Terre in large part because of the kindness and care of the staff at Hotel Villa Steno. If you're traveling there, this should be your absolute first choice.

Wonderful room with a true balcony (table and chairs). Breakfast was really good and friendly staff everywhere! Roof top terrace was amazing. Good selection of wine, beer, spirits that they bring to your room or terrace on request. I'd be remiss to not mention the shower... most spacious, best water pressure and rain shower head. It was amazing after a few few small showers in other parts of Italy. Must go! If you're bringing luggage you DON'T want to haul up stairs or hills, call hotel ahead of time to arrange a taxi to pick up your luggage and take the nice stroll on foot. Luggage will be there waiting for you! Great location within walking distance to train station, trail paths, many restaurants and waterfront.

My whole family loves this place, this was our fourth visit. Matteo and Carla are fantastic hosts and we feel like family when we arrive. The setting is beautiful, it overlooks the town of Monterosso and it's the perfect place to have a glass of Prosecco and watch the boats come and go. The breakfast Carla serves is great, and because of the protocols they served it in our room (See pic). We were celebrating our anniversary and they went out of there way to make it extra special (again pic). A special note to mention Inez. She saved us the night our dinner plans fell through. She shared with us a local's trick. Our dinner was great. I felt honored she would share the secrets of a local with us. I am already looking forward to going back!

The front desk staff at Hotel Margherita were really nice and helpful in booking a room for us. We ended up in a really nice two story Junior Suite. The rooms were clean, modern and had a large balcony that overlooked the town. We would get wonderful aromas of bakeries and restaurants located below. They also had a daily complimentary breakfast which included a variety a pastries, fruit, eggs for hard boiling, variety of juices and coffee. I really enjoyed my daily morning chocolate torte. :-) Wi-Fi was also complimentary. The hotel was recently renovated since the flooding in the area in late 2011. I love the cream colored leather couches they have in their lobby. And they have a hotel bar which was nice to have available after a long day at the beach or hiking in the area. I reminisce about sitting in their perfectly air conditioned lobby with a cool drink. Hotel Margherita is also perfectly located in the middle of the town of Monterosso. It was fun to wake up, sit in the balcony and watch the locals opening their shops, cafes opening for the morning, fishermen going to the water, and tourists being tourists. We had various great restaurants right below our hotel and it was a short stroll down the hill to the beach.

When we arrived, they let us check in our luggage prior to check in and after while we explored Cinque Terre. We booked the very small bedrooms, which made efficient use of the space and had a lovely outdoor patio area. If the weather had been warmer, we would have spent some time out there. However, the biggest highlight of the hotel for us was definitely the breakfast. Breakfast was included with the hotel reservation. Normally it's served on their rooftop balcony where all the lemon trees grow, but due to the weather, we dined indoors, which was just as lovely and more comfortable. Highly recommend Eraldo's crepes with their lemon jam sauce. Three of us ordered omelettes and each omelette ended up being garnished differently. It felt like a home-cooked meal. You could see the staff mixing the batter at the front. Their smoothies also used real fruit, and they had a unique lemon smoothie worth trying! I was surprised how it was more sweet than sour. Then there was the yogurt with lemon curd, the freshly-baked focaccia, croissants...I could go on and on. It was definitely THE BEST BREAKFAST we had during our trip to Italy. After we checked out, the hotel staff allowed us to leave our luggage while we continued to explore more of Cinque Terre, and when we officially checked out, they gave us a complimentary heart-shaped fridge magnet featuring Monterosso. Would stay at Albergo Marina again in a heartbeat!

Just a few…read morehundred steps from the water, Albergo Marina (aka Hotel Marina) was the polar opposite of our hotel in Rome, in an expected, excellent way. The hotel has five floors of uniquely styled rooms with varying layouts, furniture, and views. We had an L (ish) shaped room on the second floor that looked out on the "street" (more like a cobblestone path) with two separate terraces that we could walk out and sit on. Views of the water are very hard to come by in this part of town, but we were able across some rooftops and up into the mountains. Sitting on the balcony all we could hear were footsteps, animals, the wind, and a constant stream of water heading towards the ocean. No cars fit up anywhere near here, so we didn't hear a single engine from our room. The bed was comfortable and warm, and nice and big. Just FYI, the king size bed is actually two not-so-king mattresses next to one another, so movement during the night could create a bit of a gap in the middle. The shower was amazing, larger than I thought it would ever be for a place like this and the rainfall shower head and water pressure were the best. The free breakfast was nice and simple. Coffee, juice, tea, pastries/bread, as well as omelettes and pancakes made to order. They offered a mid-afternoon snack, and a room here gets you into a free pesto tasting that happens every day from 2pm-3pm just down the street. They have free WiFi, which happened to be much faster (11.12/1.89) than the WiFi at our previous hotel in Rome, and enabled us to stream 1080p Netflix at night without issue. The staff here was extremely nice, and provided us with excellent recommendations on food, drinks, and things to check out while we were in town. I would definitely recommend this place for a stay in Monterosso, especially when it gets warmer and you can leave the windows open 100% of the time.

Upon our arrival two staff members with sincere smiles upon their faces greeted us by name. Throughout our five day visit, the owners and staff were there to answer any questions and/or offer guidance in purchasing train tickets or recommending restaurants. The service was second to none. The breakfasts in the morning were plentiful, homemade, and delicious. The views from the breakfast balcony and our room (Number 5) were nothing less than breathtaking. The room and hotel property was spotless; the grounds well taken care of with lemon, orange, and olive trees with fragrant flowers. The hotel's proximity to the old town is ideal for walking and for getting to the train and/or ferry for excursions. My husband and I highly recommend this hotel to anyone who wants a top shelf experience in one of the most magical places in the world. Owners, Carla & Matteo made our stay so memorable. They are the most caring & hospitable hosts I have ever met, concerned about every guest. I so enjoyed getting to know them. And I loved all the staff - Paula & John are outstanding professionals & eager to help, the breakfast ladies were amazing - everyone is like family. The hotel is beautiful! So serene, you can't help but relax. Everything was immaculate. Our lovely room was tastefully furnished with a comfortable bed, a desk & chair, a large wardrobe that held all of our things, a refrigerator, and our own balcony where we sat every morning & evening enjoying the beautiful view of the town & the sea. They have thought of every convenience from welcoming snacks in the refrigerator to printouts & helpful tips about the area. Bathrooms are stocked with shampoo, conditioner & body wash. A hair dryer is provided. Ample plugins. After a long day of hiking, a refreshing shower & cooling air conditioning was wonderful. The breakfast buffet was set on the main balcony with an option to eat indoors. It was so delicious with everything you could want - bacon & eggs, fresh juices, meats & cheeses, yogurt & granola, fresh fruit, and delicious homemade desserts every day. (The lemon tart was my favorite) Matteo made it so easy for us to purchase a discounted Cinque Terre card that included the trains & a reservation for Via dell'Amore. He was very helpful about the ferry schedule - it is a short walk to catch the ferry. Ask about Restaurant recommendations - (Galin was our favorite). Everyone is so kind & helpful with such great service - even filling your water bottles with ice & water for your hikes, towels for the beach, and quick, reasonable laundry service. And don't miss Carla's fantastic Pesto Cooking Class! It was such fun & so delicious to eat after we made it. We even got the recipes. Make sure to reserve your spot. While the hotel is up a small, steep hill, we were able to walk up pulling our wheeled carryon luggage without a problem. The hotel will arrange a taxis for you from the train station if needed. They also have car parking, which is rare. Once at the hotel, you can walk through the lovely lemon grove down some steps arriving right on the main street of Old Town. The best of both - scenic quiet hillside, yet still in town. There is a small beach in Old Town and also just a 10 -15 minute walk to New Town beaches. Easy walk to the train station and the trails. The hospitality and location are the best you will experience, well worth the price. We stayed 4 glorious nights & I hated to leave. I feel Carla & Matteo are our dear friends now.
