Albert's Shed is a restaurant located in the Castlefield area of Manchester, just off the end of Deansgate, it is located within walking distance of Deansgate Train and Metrolink stations, around a 5-10 minute walk from there, along with the canal and across the cobblestones. This place is actually quite hard to find, despite coming to the Castlefield Rooms around 1 1/2 years ago now, which this place is attached to (and even has the lift for), I seemed to forget where this place was, luckily a kind staff member helped phone me and gave me directions in an excellent manner, hence my experience here started off well for when I did arrive. I decided to order two courses, after being presented with the specials menu, regular menu and gluten-free menu, the gluten-free menu only contained Christmas items and the set-menu which was a shame, they do have other things such as gluten-free pizzas. I found the selection of pizzas to be quite poor, they seemed to sell more weird and unique pizzas rather than the standard Pepperoni or Margherita etc, for example, their only form of Margharita was one with Buffalo Mozzarella. The wi-fi here didn't appear to be working, luckily I managed to get a satisfactory mobile data signal, which is normally rare in Manchester especially at this time of year with the busy Christmas rush. I visited on a Monday afternoon, and the place inside did seem really busy despite being in "typical working hours." For my order, I decided to go for two courses: Starter: Roasted Parsnip and Pear Soup with Gluten Free Ciabatta Main: Gluten Free Spicy Sausage Pizza My soup came quite quickly, it didn't look too appetising, it actually looked like someone had thrown up on my plate in terms of the colour of the soup, they did try to dress the soup up abit to make it look nicer. The overall quality of my soup was satisfactory, the portion size was a little much for the starter, I didn't like how they put pieces of pear in the middle as it was too sweet, the soup was okay at first but it became to seem a little sickly very quickly, some parts of the soup seemed to be on the thicker side, and some parts seemed to be on the watery side which was a little unusual and strange, like the combination of parsnip and pear in a soup anyway. I did like how they had gluten-free bread, which was ciabatta to go with the soup however, as normally places don't offer anything like this. For my main, I decided to order the Spicy Sausage Pizza and it was awful, I ended up having to send it back, and after a long wait for manager approval I got the £11 cost knocked off my bill, I found the sausage to just be spicy, not tasty or meaty or decent quality at all, and the fact they put some sort of dip, which I think was sour cream on the pizza just was another unusual and unncessary addition. The pizza base its-self was bland and hard, it did look fresh so this is a real shame too that something like this was hard, bland and simply like cardboard. The rest of my toppings didn't appear to be great on the pizza either. The staff did seem friendly in most cases, some seemed a little rude and ignorant especially how I struggled to get someone's attention at first to tell them about my awful pizza, and then the fact they made me wait to get my bill, they did knock the pizza off but I can't understand why this needs managerial approval, I just wanted to get my bill and leave, not hang around because something of bad quality I didn't eat has to be knocked of my bill, that's like a double punishment, having awful food and having to wait for them to adjust the bill just to knock that off. The location is quite isolated being off Deansgate, along the canal and cobblestones and can be hard to find at first and it isn't really a place one would find themselves at, without having to go out of their way to go to, and this really isn't the place you want to go out of your way to go too. I feel Albert's Shed deserves one star, which is a shame considering I've wanted to try this place for a while, dating back until that year and half or so ago when I attended an event in The Castlefield Rooms which interlinks and shares a lift with this place, the main issues resulting in the low rating was the slow service in identifying and resolving problems and the quality of my main course being poor in numerous aspects, as well as slight issues with my starter and the location. read more

An extremely popular restaurant with Manchester residents and not without reason. Its Castlefield basin location is the envy of every proprietor in the city. Not only is the area beautiful it is also generally free of towny idiots and the collection of surrounding bars and restaurants mean you can enjoy a really relaxed hop. The food is fantastic and fairly priced. The wine list, though not what you'd call extensive, is well chosen and help is on hand should you need advice on which wine would suit your meal. The building itself is modern, spacious and tastefully finished. Certainly somewhere I'm happy to be becoming so familiar with. read more

Albert's Shed is a lovely Italian located centre of the Castlefield canal basin. Very reasonably priced (considering it's city centre) and I would definitely recommend this one if you get chance to go. So why is it called Albert's Shed? (not very Italian I here you cry). Well I have an interesting fact for you : Albert was the former occupant of the shed which he used to store his tools and equipment during the renovation of Dukes 92 next door and the lockkeeper's cottage opposite. He agreed to move out of the shed to make way for the restaurant on the condition that the owners named the restaurant after him! Now I have to admit I am a something of a Mediterranean girl at heart and often wonder if I was found by my parents in a moses basket somewhere in Tuscany. The reason being is I LOVE ITALIAN FOOD, I LOVE SUNSHINE and I LOVE THE MEDITERRANEAN WAY OF LIFE......but then again who doesn't I suppose. I had the garlic rosemary and chili bread to start followed with a spicy salami pizza- napoli salami, tomato and lots of mozzarella and it was 'sorprendente' or 'amazing' to us brits. The service was second to none and I felt I could have stayed all evening if it wasn't for the fact I was getting trigger happy with the wine and had work early next morning. I later found out that its 2 courses for £10 before 7pm ......Italians...they always get it right ! read more

This is the place where I my meet my friends on a Sunday afternoon for an Anatra pizza. This is where I take my family to at Christmas time for a dress-up, sit-down meal. This is where I go with the other half for a romantic dinner. What I am trying to say is that Albert's Shed is one of the most versatile restaurants in Manchester. It is an absolutely lovely place to dine with a chameleon like quality to it . The decor is clean crisp white linen and chocolate leather chairs. Outside tables are lovely to lounge at during Summer but slightly cool as it is in the shade. So what do you want to know about the food? You can have 2 courses for a tenner every weekday until 7pm and I think that I have tried everything on the menu so I am qualified to review the cuisine. This is not really a traditionally Italian restaurant, I would class it more as an A La Carte restaurant which serves a few Italian dishes. The Sea Bass is the best, not a bone in sight which is a task in itself! The mushroom risotto is perfect as is the rib-eye steak. Everything is cooked to perfection here and presented beautifully. The big attraction for me at Albert's Shed is the standard of food for children up to the age of 10. Great stone baked pizza or penne with tomato sauce is always a favourite with my lot. Albert's Shed does not have a chicken nugget or a fish finger in sight- oh no, it sells crispy chicken strips and haddock and cheese fishcakes. With ice cream or fresh fruit for dessert, this costs just £5.50 for little ones and they enjoy it immensely. To keep the children occupied before they eat, friendly waitresses bring colouring books and crayons for them and spend a bit of time making a fuss of their artistic efforts after the meal. Albert's Shed is my good, old faithful of a restaurant. It is the place with free parking, the place where I know I will get good food, the place whose loos my Mum approves of and the place I will continue to go back to again and again. Great food, excellent prices, dessert selection was a bit weak I went Alberts Shed on Wednesday for dinner with my colleague as we were in Manchester for work. Having read a couple of Yelp reviews I was looking forward to it and it, for the most part, did not disappoint. The restaurant is nicely decorated and our request to be near the window was accomodated graciously. Our waitress was pleasant and entertaining and patiently waited through our indecision. We opted for a glass of wine each and garlic bread for a starter. In proper Italian style, the garlic bread was more like a pizza base than pieces of bread and was delicious. I could have done with a little less butter but I'm not complaining. I ordered the rabbit gnocchi for a starter. The gnocchi was perfectly cooked, allowing the pasta to be tender but with enough substance to be chewed and not gum up on your teeth. The strips of rabbit where a bit salty alone, but went well with the gnocchi and the creamy sauce was incredible. For my main, I opted for an Anatra pizza as I was in the mood for duck. The Anatra is composed of a flat bread base covered in hoi sin and plum sauce, chunks of roasted duck, and a sharp cheddar type cheese. The combination results in a powerful mix of flavours that can be a bit shocking at first bite. As I am used to strong curries and sharp flavours, I didn't think too much of it and quite enjoyed it but my colleague who prefers milder tastes was overwhelmed and relieved that she had gone with the Coq-au-vin. For dessert we shared a chocolate fondant which is usually a favourite of mine. However, this is where Alberts shed failed as the dessert was quite dry and tasted slightly burned as if the chocolate had been tempered incorrectly. The ice cream was more ice than cream which didn't work at all. My glass of dessert wine also took on a more medicinal taste as it was not chilled sufficiently to account for the higher alcohol content. Overall, I would probably eat here and maybe get there before 7pm for the 2 courses for £10 deal. I'll pass on dessert and try my luck elsewhere. read more

Having historically not been a huge fan of Castlefield I was pleasantly surprised how good the food and drink was at Albert's Shed. I went trad with fish n' chips from the lunch menu and it was on par with the best in Manchester (TNQ in my opinion). Wait staff were wonderful and were really attentive when a friend's starter arrived a bit cold. And the venue is a great space. Many good things to say about my first visit here. Firstly, I drove there and despite it being very busy found a nearby parking spot with no difficulty, always a bonus. The restaurant itself is in a good location in central Manchester and perfect if you want a lively vibrant atmosphere, especially if you request to sit in the outdoor area. The interior is well set out with many tables and fancy decor and the service was prompt. I had the sea bass and my friend had a steak, both of which went down a treat! This and a couple of drinks came to £30 each which is a little on the pricey side but what was expected for the quality. All in all a lovey restaurant, will definitely return! read more

TL;DR - Top notch food and service in a great setting. Anyone passing through Castlefield and wandering by the canals will undoubtedly have seen Dukes 92 because it's big and it's usually busy, but what they may not have noticed is that one of the buildings on the site is actually a separate venue - and that is Albert's Shed. Booking in advance is recommended. We had a table booked on a Saturday evening so had no problem, but people were turning up on the off chance of getting a table and being told it would be a few hours until anything was free. So we arrived and were greeted and seated by a member of staff. Our waiter struck a really nice balance between formality and informality - he was there to help whenever we needed him and was very friendly, but he never intruded and everything was done at our pace (i.e. we weren't rush to order!)... it's a tough balance to strike but he managed it really well. We had gin and tonics whilst we looked over the menus, and then for starters we went for belly pork (Mark) and crab & prawn fishcakes (me). Both dishes were really nice, although Mark likes a bit more fat on his belly pork. For main courses, we couldn't have opted for more different dishes. I had a Lancashire cheese and onion pie, Mark had Malayan chicken... these two dishes really show the breadth of the food that's on offer - dishes from all over the world, plus steaks, fish, pizzas and more. But everything which came out was delicious - although I did think the portions were perhaps a little on the small side. No such problem with dessert though - my pannetone bread and butter pudding was huge, satisfying and delicious. Throughout our meal we also had a really nice wine - Albert's Shed gets their wine from local Hanging Ditch wine merchants, and they have some really nice bottles on their menu. So we left with fully bellies and smiles on our faces. The only reason I've not given the place a full 5 stars is that the portion sizes were a little small a times, and the gin and tonics seemed disproportionately expensive to everything else we had. This is one of my fave place to have Sunday roast on a summer afternoon. The restaurant has a great outdoor section that allows you to enjoy the sun and live music. There's two types of roast that you can order, roast chicken or chateaubriand. I usually get the chateaubriand which is shared by 2 people for £22.50 per person. This place knows how to cook proper chateaubriand. If you tell them you want it medium rare, you'll get it as so unlike many other places. The roast comes with Yorkshire pudding , mash potato, mash sweet potato. The desserts aren't very good here so you can easily skip it. They have an ok wine menu and some cocktails. I'd suggest to come here for Sunday roast, and enjoy Sunday afternoon away with food, wine, and live music. The staff are nice and attentive while the restaurant is simply decorated. If you're not keen for roast, they also offer a set menu 2 courses for £15.95 or 3 courses for £17.95. read more

This place is a decent enough bistro-style restaurant. It boasts one of the larger al fresco seating areas you can find in Manchester - I don't know if it's the constant rain, but there's not much of *anything* outside in Manchester. I can't recall my starter now, but it was pretty good. I had the venison main which was well-executed. Since we'd brought our own birthday cake I didn't get to try the desserts. The service was mostly good. Although I was a bit disappointed to be handed a dirty glass when having a pre-meal drink. Seems like the sort of thing that's easy to sort out. I wouldn't go totally out of my way to eat here, but if you're in the area, it's not a bad choice. That, or a burger at the adjoining Duke's grill. read more

Albert's Shed is one of the best restaurants in Manchester, and for two reasons. The prices, for the quality of food are superb, and the location could not be better. The restaurant is in one of my favourite areas of Manchester, which, for me is reason to visit alone. I adore the Castlefield area, and Albert's Shed fits it perfectly. The restaurant offers a range of classic dishes, with modern, contemporary twists, and never hits a dud note. The last time I visited Albert's Shed, I had the most delicious pan-fried duck breast, which, although slightly on the pricey side, was a real culinary tour de force. The food is simple, but excellently executed and worth every penny. The venue itself is sleek, and very well decorated. It is modern and minimalist, and one of the most sophisticated eateries in Manchester. It can get very, very busy, so it is well worth trying to book in advance, as, especially at the weekends, you will likely not get a table for love nor money. Unfortunately, as with other venues in the area, Albert's Shed is very well known, and therefore very well visited by the food lovers in Manchester, so be warned. Still, if the worst comes to the worst, you can eat next door at Dukes 92 which serves a very similar menu. Still, Albert's Shed is a very special restaurant which celebrates fine food with undeniable style. read more

Don't mind it in Albert's Shed, I've had good (mostly years ago) and bad (more recently) meals, but the restaurant space itself is one of the best in the city, I just felt that I had to inform Alfred S from the review below that the manager is supposed to keep the service charge. The service charge in a restaurant is there to cover the extra staff needed to accommodate an unusual request such as a party over 6/8. This is why service is not normally charged on a normal table of 2-4 during normal hours. Service is also completely optional, so if you don't think that the extra is deserved then you don't have to pay it. If you want money to go to the staff then leave a tip. read more

I expected quite a bit better from Albert's Shed. I had the Lamb as a main and agreed to it being pink rather than cooked for longer, so I'm not sure whether it was meant to taste that bad or whether I've just always had lamb cooked a bit longer, but I simply couldn't finish it, especially annoying when my meal came to £35. I had the rabbit gnocchi as a start which was a bit nicer, but still nothing amazing as it were. Also disappointed at their Draught Beer selection. I'm not particular San Miguel fan but it was the "best" of a bad lot. They have some rather better Beers in bottles, and I ended up switching to those. Edit - P.S. If you are planning to go on a speacial occasion (mothers/fathers day, valentines etc) be prepared for a set menu - although there is a good amount of choice. What a wonderful find. From the moment we walked in we felt very welcome and looked after. Menu had good choice, the food was beautifully presented and tasted delicious. Our waiter was appropriately attentive both with filling our glasses, checking that everything was alright to making sure we had our desired time between courses. I ordered Peanut and Duck satay which was gorgeous, only negative was that the dressing on the salad was a little overpowering. For main course I had Tuna with advocado and tomato salsa with sweet potato fries, perfectly cooked. Dessert was mini Eccles cakes, pastry was superb as was the filling. Great choice of wines with prices to suit all budgets. I would not hesitate to recommend this restaurant and will definitely visit again when in the area. read more

Enjoyed a lovely "steak a la large metal bolt" here. An iron bolt the size of my thumb swimming in the sauce that my steak was served with! Until I tried to spear it with my fork I thought it was some obscure, shiny variety of Japanese mushroom. Staff reactions ranged from bewilderment right through to amused curiosity, not passing via apologetic. After explaining the situation several times, eventually a manager offered the explanation that it must have come out of the side of the frying pan. Biggest frying pan I've ever seen, then. Despite this, the steak was quite good and they gave us a free bottle of wine. Everyone else enjoyed theirs and the restaurant has a good atmosphere. Might give it another go, then. It obviously takes something more disgusting than a metal bolt in the food to put me off somewhere! read more

Decided to book here for my boyfriends birthday and I'm glad I did. Atmosphere is great for a romantic meal and the service was excellent and quick without being overbearing. For starters I chose the rabbit gnocchi which was rich and tasty and almost melted in my mouth. I like gnocchi but can usually find it very heavy but this was light and went down easily. My boyfriend opted for the little pie for his starter. The filling he said was excellent but that the pastry left something to be desired. For mains I opted for the slow roasted duck leg with sugar snap peas and spring onion mash whilst he went for the roast loin of venison with the roasted sweet potatoes. The mash was one of the best things I've ever tasted in my life and worked beautifully with the sweet flavours of the cherry jus with my duck. The duck was cooked perfectly, and came right off the bone. My partner allowed me to try his venison which tasted amazing. The Stilton came through beautifully and was incredibly rich and filling. For dessert I went for the chocolate volcano which oozed brilliant chocolate goo whilst my boyfriend went for the lemon creme brûlée which had the perfect crunch. All in all a great place for a special occasion meal. read more

I came here with a couple of friends on a Saturday evening, one of whom is a coeliac. We explained our intolerances to the waiter and he said he would check our order with the kitchen, but didn't offer us an allergen menu. When my starter came, it was covered in breadcrumbs; the waiter apologised and said he'd forgot, and I had to order another starter. When the main came, my friend's haloumi was covered in some batter, so her dish had to be sent back. The waiter apologised again, and offered us a free bottle of prosecco. When we had food that was suitable for our dietary requirements, it was delicious, but getting there was tough. One error is bad enough, but twice...I don't think I'll be returning here read more

Really nice Italian restaurant in Castlefield which I imagine is amazing in the summer with loads of outside seating. I went in winter though. It was good to see a full menu on a Sunday. Not too pricey for Castlefield in the City Centre. Really good atmosphere even though it was not very busy. Only problem was the service. Literally had to wave a bottle of wine in the air to get the waiters attention. And then had to spend more time trying to get the bill. Which is strange as there were a lot of staff on and it was not busy. Really good food and atmosphere though. read more

Watch out for the SERVICE CHARGE as it ALL goes to the manager. The staff only get a tip if you give them a gratuity. Management said it was to pay for staff breakages and chef wastage, clearly an excuse to get round the law and make more more money for the owner. I've been here for a number of different reasons (work, a date and with friends) and it has never disappointed. It is particularly busy in the summer as there is a lovely terrace area overlooking the locks but despite this you never have to wait to long at the bar. The food is reasonably priced and is very good, as are the waiting staff. I'd recommend trying their summer BBQs I'd you get the chance. read more

This is one of my favourite places to go - summer or winter. The place itself is stylish and modern with a relaxed feel of luxury. The menu is varied enough that if you want to go and spend £10 a head and have a nice pizza you can - but alternatively you can go and splash out a little more and enjoy a nice 3 course a la carte dinner. I have always found the service to be good, polite and efficient. In the summer it also offers diners the chance to sit outside under a canopied terrace, so best of both worlds ! Castlefield has a certain magic to me that I am unable to define, but I just love the class that the bars & restaurants offer and the tranquil setting and you are not miles away from the city if you fancy a knees up afterwards. Anyone thinking of going to Albert's please read this.... From a waitress that has recently left because of this, please be aware that we do not get the full amount of tips that are given to us by our customers! Tips are meant for the waiter/waitress and are dependent on your experience with them and a reward for good service. Albert's unfairly take tips off their staff to line the owners pockets. If you're happy that the majority of your card tips go direct to the company then continue to do so, I just thought everyone should be aware of this. The only tips we actually get are cash. I have just left this greedy company as 70% of the card tips and 10% service charges go directly to the owners and are used to pay the salaried staff their wages! During the shifts you're under so much stress and constantly have far too many tables to manage just so that the extremely profitable company can save money on staff hours. The wage of servers is already minimum wage and so we do this solely for the tips. We are told we would face being sacked if we ever told a customer the truth that we do not get the full amount of tips they leave us. At the end of every night Albert's take a % of our sales off us. Whether we have actually made the tips or not, they take a cut of everything we have sold from us that day. So theoretically we could end up paying out of our own pocket. Then every fortnight we get a cheque showing us how much money we have made on card tips and then it shows the massive reduction that goes to 'Albert's house' and the disheartening figure that we are actually coming away with. Some cheques can be in minus figures if we haven't made enough, and so we then owe the company money! These tips are hard earned by us and not earned by those that are receiving a large cut of them! I don't know how a company as popular and successful as them can justify it! New rules have come into place that if waiting on staff type something wrong on a till we will be charged. Unfortunately mistakes can happen due to the fast paced job, 14 hour shifts, several days without a day off, having to cope with 20 tables and big party's all at once), and being rushed off our feet. We the waiters/waitresses now have to pay for any mistake. We are also charged the full amount if a table does a runner and doesn't pay. We are charged a fine if we don't clear a table soon enough. We are charged if we haven't put our tables for the evening into our names on the till. Basically any excuse to charge us! This is a greedy company that looks to make as much money as possible out of its staff and basically does anything to stop people keeping their deserved tips. Ate there today, Mother's Day. We sat by the window and the window ledge was dirty with dead flies. Our tablecloth was filthy as well. Food was cold and very poor quality. Atmosphere was awful. A great restaurant near the Deansgate locks in Manchester that do delicious food at really resonable prices. They serve pizza, pasta and meat dishes and some yummy desserts.
