Best pie around. Right in northern quarter so there is plenty around. They have table service, but, we ordered at the counter they have for takeaway before realizing. The standard steak and ale pie was great. Served with gravy for a great compliment. The outside was flaky while still being bready. The inside is piping hot and exactly what you want from comfort food. The Moolin Rouge outdid the steak and ale pie by a mile. The flavor from the broth was so delicious. Stopped into this shop for a nice pie, and this was perfect. I'm not sure how I don't have a review for this place. I swore I've written it before. Anyway, this definitely one of my favorite places in Manchester. I have to eat here everytime I'm in town. The pies are delicious! They offer a nice selection of different fillings from traditional to more adventurous like Indian or Mexican flavored pies. They have a permanent menu as a well as a daily offering of specialty pies. They also offer vegetarian, vegan and gluten free options as well. I've tried several and one of my favorites is the Heidi with goat cheese sweet potato, spinach and red onion. I didn't really care for the Saag Pieneer since the first ingredient is peas, and if you get it with the Mothership style (which you simply must; explained below) then it's just way too many peas. As ordered, you gotta order your pie Mothership style where your pie is served with minty mushy peas, mashed potatoes, crispy shallots, cheddar cheese and pot of gravy on the side for you to douse on. It's decadent and amazing! Service is quick and easy. You can also order pies to take away hot or bake at home. They bake up really nicely at home, so this is a great option if you can't decide which pie to order in. read more

Came here for dinner with a friend on a weekday evening close to 8PM, restaurant was about half full. I was debating between the paneer pie or the moo + blue. I asked for which one I should have and the waiter said chickpeas aren't usually in pies so it's a bit more unique, suggested that one. Since I've never had a pie before, I wanted a more traditional one so I opted for the moo + blue. It was really tasty! The outside was crispy and the inside was meaty; I thought the inside could've been more flavorful though. The gravy was tasty too, and I had a side of mash. Every table has spicy ketchup and spicy mustard too, both were delicious to add onto the pie. I also had toffee pudding with custard (ice cream was an option too); the toffee was really sweet but not as sweet with the custard. The pudding tasted like cake (I don't know the difference between pudding and cake), but it was pretty pricey for what it was at £6, almost the same price as the pie which was £6.25 (the mash was £3.50). One a recent trip to Manchester, my luvley wife, daughter and I had spent the day at the Manchester Museum and exploring the town with our FirstBus day passes. Working up our appetites on a gorgeous day in the city, our other objective was meat pies for lunch, and with Yelp on my phone, our destination was set to Pieminister. We were greeted warmly by the friendly staff and shown to a banquette type seat in the rear, passing the glass case with all of those tasty looking pies behind. A round of drinks (Fentiman's Cherry Cola for daughter, a glass of Rose for my luvley wife and a bottle of Camden Hells Lager for me) quickly appeared as we decided on our choices. A Moo (steak and ale) with onion gravy and cheese mash for our daughter, Freeranger (chicken, ham, leek and thyme) with sherry gravy and cheese mash for my wife and a Moo & Blue (steak with Stilton), onion gravy and cheese mash for me. I could not resist a couple of the pickled eggs as well. Our food arrived, piping hot, with steaming boats of aromatic gravy. I dispensed with the eggs at first, nothing remarkable but okay with a little hot sauce to kick up the vinegar flavor. But those pies! As we each cut into ours and the fillings oozed slowly over the bed of mashed potatoes, it made for a wonderful meal. I wished I could have bought bottles of the gravy to take home but used a good bit on the mashed. My one regret is that I should have ordered plain mashed as the cheddar in the potatoes dimmed the taste of the Stilton blue in my pie. Exquisite nonetheless. To complete our experience, we ordered a sticky toffee pudding with vanilla ice cream to share, even though we are not big dessert eaters. One bite of that luscious toffee sauce and I actually started to giggle with delight. I got our waitress giggling too when I told her why. There wasn't a crumb or drop left when we finished. I've wanted to try an English pie forever! While visiting Manchester, I decided to make an effort to find a place that serves pies. I ordered the Moo pie "Mothership" style. That's the British Beef Steak & Craft Ale topped with mash, minty mushy peas, cheddar, and shallots... wow!!! When it came to my table it was like a work of art! A pie onto of mash with more mash and other goodness on top. Even came with a tiny ladle of gravy! This place is sooooo dam good! Not to mention it was cold and rainy outside so this was the perfect way to warm up. I have walked past this place dozens of times and after working up an appetite we decided to lunch here The booths are set high and make it feel quite private surrounding the open kitchen . We were greeted warmly and provided with a little menu on a wooden clipboard. Feeling still tender I chose a cherry coke while I picked my main. These pies ranged from vegan to Mexican . I settled on a venison "deerstalker" pie with cheese mash while the other ladies had a chicken pie. They all arrived together like UFOs balanced on a mountain of mash accompanied by a gravy boat..these were all tasty made with quality ingredients at £7. This place has been on my hit list for a while now so when my friend came down for the weekend it was high time I gave it a go! We arrived around 4pm on a Sunday afternoon so it was pretty quiet but we were welcomed in and told to take a seat if we were eating in. The little menus are great with a good few options for pies (including a good veggie selection!) and lots of sides to add if you are particularly peckish! We both decided to go for the MOTHERSHIP - which is any pie from the menu plus mashed potato, minted mushy peas, gravy, cheddar cheese topped off with crispy shallots. Luckily we didn't have to wait long as we were starving! The pie itself was so tasty and filled to the brim with chicken and mushroom. The pastry wasn't too stodgy or thick and was lovely and crispy on the outside. The mash potato was gorgeous and creamy and the minty peas were delicious - considering i'm not a mushy pea person! The addition of the crisp onions gave it that little bit extra. As a gravy conisour I would have to say it was a 10/10 - you can taste the red wine addition and it was just the right amount of thickness. Yum! I have been thinking of trying this place for sometime after good reports from friends. On this occasion I came with my brother who is also a fan after discovering them when they were just starting out at a festival back in the day, this Bristol based pie and mash place lived up to my expectations. I had the mothershipped chicken of aragon, which was really very good, I love a good chicken pie and this one was super. My brother had the mothershipped matador which seemed to be taken care of quickly so must of been good as he would say so if it had not lived up to expectations and to be fair it was gone fairly quickly which is always a good sign. The gravy here is really good, rich and smooth and complemented my pie and mash really well, it is important to get a good gravy, and the amount of times I am disappointed by bad gravy when out means when it is as good as this one was it is worth a mention of its own. Friendly by quiet (could barely hear him from time to time) waiter, was great and brought things quickly after it took me a wee while to pick what to have, but he coped with that. read more

Came here last week during British Pie Week. I had heard this place was really good and you can't beat a good pie. Don't think it has a menu on their web site but thankfully someone has uploaded a photo of the menu on here so I was able to see what pies they did before going - they all sounded delicious. When I walked into Pieminister, it was about 3pm so wasn't busy at all - not near lunch time and everyone in work. I had a look at pies on display and what was listed on the board. I was kind of hoping for the steak and kidney pie they do but didn't see it on list. I did ask what she would recommend and she then mentioned they had some specials on. I decided to go for the Minty Lamb one - which was the last one! Must be good. I went for it and also had some mashed potato on the side. I decided to have it as a takeaway and it was nicely packed up in a box. So when I opened the box, the pie looked lovely. And the taste. It tasted great!! Lovely lamb, nice carrots and swede and a minty taste. The mash was not bad. The pie itself only cost £4.20. The mashed potato was £1.50. Pie is life. Pie is love. I've never seen anywhere take their love of pie quite so seriously as this place. There are photos of pies, photos of things related to pies, pie related jokes, and even pies on the toilet doors and on photos in the toilets! Remember Pie-Face from The Beano? Everything in his life was pie focused and pie related and shaped. Welcome to Pieminister, in Manchester. We visited on a cold Thursday afternoon in November, but as you walk into the small shop front in the heart of the Northern Quarter, there's a fantastic warm atmosphere, both in the steamed up windows from the warmth of the food and the people, but also in the cosy seating, everyone sat together chatting, relaxing, laughing, and munching on pies! I've wanted to try Pieminister for a long time. Their pie menu on their website sounds amazing, and I wanted to try some as soon as I read it! I visited with Phil R, and we were quickly seated on a table by the stairs, and right by a cabinet showing all of the lovely pies available, behind which the staff were busying away in a small galley kitchen-cum-bar area. Even before we ordered, it was great watching all of the meals being assembled with good hearty portions and good quality stuff! Looking at the menu, it's what you'd expect, but happily so. They do pies. Good pies. Lots of pies. That's what they do. Pies. There's also Festive Pies at this time of year, a few pie-similar light meals, and a superb array of traditional sides to go with pies. Pies pies pies! So from the menu I chose the Free Ranger with minted mushy peas and gravy, whereas Phil R opted for the epically named MOTHERSHIP, which is a pie (he chose Fungi Chicken) with creamy mashed potatoes, cheddar cheese, minted mushy peas, crispy shallots, and gravy. It's enough to make a grown Northern man weep manly tears of joy! Although there was a little bit of a wait (as it was very busy), the atmosphere was relaxed, warm, and comfortable, so it wasn't really much of an issue, especially when you'll have to simply believe me when I say it was worth the wait!! Our pies arrived in those classic camping style metal bowls. The bottom layer was the creamy mash, with the pie sat on top of it, then the minted mushy peas dolloped lovingly on top of that. The meals go upwards, which given that Phil R's meal also had crispy shallots and cheddar cheese, gives you the idea of why it was named 'The Mothership', our gravy was served in traditional chrome gravy boats on the side. I must admit I tried Phil's crispy shallots and I'm DEFINITELY having those next time!! The quality of the food was outstanding. The mash was perfectly creamy and traditional, the pies themselves succulent and tender, and perfectly seasoned, with just the right firmness to the pastry, wheras the minted mushy peas were good old fashioned nostalgia. All of these combined (along with a bottle of Fentimans Dandelion and Burdock) delivered the perfect homely, nostalgic, comforting dinner that perfectly accompanied a freezing cold November afternoon in Manchester. The service was friendly, efficient and professional. We were met with smiles and helpful attitudes whenever we needed to ask staff something, right up to paying and leaving. Pieminister, keep doing what you're doing, you're doing it so very very right, and I thoroughly look forward to returning again soon, by myself, with my partner, with my friends, and with my parents and family. All Aboard the Gravy Train If you've seen the El Food Brothers Twitter recently, you'll have seen that Mash Madness has taken its hold of us. The quest was set, lets find the best mash in the Northern Quarter. Our first hit of mash is being provided by Pieminister, for two reasons, first, we love a good pun, and secondly, it says 'Pie & Mash' in the window. Entry to Pieminister is slightly confusing, not because we couldn't figure out to push the door, unlike several other people we watched later, but because the first thing that greets you is a staircase. "Have we walked into someones house?" We head up the staircase, in the classic English way of confused politeness we make our selves known and are given the initial option "Are you eating in?". So they do takeaway pies as well, good to know for grabbing a pie and mash on the hoof. We are told to take a seat, and we decide to head back down the staircase, as things are looking at bit too 'Yard and Coop' cozy for our liking on the mezzanine level. Its benches and hard looking chairs down here as well. I make a bee-line for the bench with the spongy looking surface, and am actually pleasantly surprised. El Food two takes the chair-shaped-bullet, but theres no complaints. Service is speedy, and we are soon ordering a beer. It has to be the 'Madness IPA', we spot its 6.8%, but egged-on by the waitress we go for it. Having already agreed that "Thursdays are bullshit" anyway, a strong beer can only help. We follow our ordering under pressure method of picking a pie, we already know we want mash. Its the 'Matador' (beef, chorizo, olive and butter bean) for me and 'Beer and deer' (venison, smoked bacon, kidney bean, scotch bonnet and Brewdog beer) for El Food Two. A friendly warning of El Food Two's choice being "a bit hot" are heeded, but he's been in the kitchen long enough to stand the heat. Gravy is an optional extra, this is bullshit, why would you want a dry pie and mash. I think gravy is as optional an extra as a parachute when you're skydiving. Obviously we both take the gravy "option", its 30p extra, the El Food Brothers millions haven't quite rolled in yet, but we push the proverbial gravy-boat out. You actually get a gravy boat as well, which round here, its a surprise to find one of these used for its intended purpose. Rather than floating a burger out to sea, or keeping your custard from your desert. It makes the whole thing seem quite classy by our standards. The drinks come quickly, and the pies not much after. Obviously most, if not all, the menu is pre-cooked and ready to plate up. This isn't a problem, it suits the lunch hour crowd perfectly, millennials don't have time to cook a whole pie. The brief interlude is spent watching passes by out of the window. Apparently people watchers are a thing, I find this an odd term, its like identifying as an air breather, but if you think of yourself as one, then this is the place for you. If you don't want to do that, you can entertain yourself watching people try and fail to open the door to Pieminister. For the record, its a push to open situation from the street. Pies delivered, gravy shipped and Colemans mustard in jar provided, we are ready to start. First things first, the pies are drowned in gravy, and then swiftly cut in two for the holy trinity (pie,mash, gravy) money shot. You can't look at these pies and not think 'bad things' about them. We nail the pies, that is to say, we eat the pies, quickly and not leaving any trace of pie and mash on the plate. El Food Two is loving his pie, "the perfect treat of heat and meat" he says. Personally the bit I tried was a bit hot, but I'm more of a mass than a heat fan when it comes to food. My pie is tasty, but its not the sort of pie you'd write about on a postcard and send to your parents when on holiday. I spot a good few slices of chorizo in there though, so they aren't scrimping on the ingredients. Having said that, I'm scraping the last of the mash of the plate with my knife and licking it off by the end, manners are bullshit. Its all over quite quickly in the end, but everyone seems satisfied. Its not always a marathon, sometimes a sprint can be just as much fun. We head up the stairs to pay, its £10.40 a piece, with the beer proving the £4.40 in that equation. Its not quite the £5 lunch, but then no one forced us to have the beer. Getting out of Pieminster provides the second challenge of the visit. We are now stuck with the till to the left of us, tables on the right, and in the middle a large group of people with absolute no self awareness or grasp of the basic laws of physics. Feeling like a contestant on the Crystal Maze who's grabbed the crystal but only has 5 seconds till being locked it, we get out, but I've no idea how. We will return, but might bring gloves next time. Overall: 7.5 gravy boats out of 10 passengers on the gravy train. read more

Let me set the scene for you.... It's a miserable, wet day in Manchester - unheard of, I know! I'm late for my bus to work and as a result have no breakfast, my stomach weeps all morning. Come lunchtime a voice cries "Pie glorious Pie" and I leg it to Pieminister! What's to fault; blue and Moo pie with creamy mash, red wine sauce followed by a salted caramel slice for £8.00. Pie, mash & gravy. That's one of the most English dishes you can get. Pretty simple set up inside, choose your pie, choose your sides - easy. I went for the Deerstalker pie as a 'Mothership' (£7.95) which means it comes with sides of mash / minted mushy peas and is covered in crispy shallots & cheddar - with gravy, obviously. I have to say the stand out part of the meal was the crispy shallots & cheese topping which was delicious. The mash was creamy & smooth, and the peas were nice, but I was expecting a little more from the actual pie. Very acceptable but no more exciting than a Hollands pie from the chippy. The pastry was a little bland too. Maybe it's just that English cuisine is a bit more of a home comfort rather then anything spectacular... Overall it's a good filling meal but if you're coming here make sure you get the 'Mothership' i.e. all the trimmings, as that's what makes the experience. Otherwise paying £4.20 for a pie on its own probably isn't worth it, you may as well get a pie from greggs. read more

This was an amazing find during our trip to Manchester, and one we only found thanks to online reviews! Pieminister is a restaurant dedicated to pies, unsurprisingly. The love of pies here is so great that the provided internet is advertised as "Pie-fi". Very humorous indeed. The pie selection is large, and there is definitely something for everyone. I had a chicken and ham hock pie and Mary had a spicy vegetarian one. We had mash, peas, and gravy as well. Everything tasted just wonderful. The pies were a good size, tasted fresh, and were served quickly after ordering. The restaurant is a good size, with plenty of tables inside, and a small few outside as well, in case the weather is nice. There's a good selection of drinks, including beer. The staff are friendly and welcoming, and the atmosphere is really nice to spend time in. Pies have never been my first choice of cuisine, but this opinion is changing gradually, and Pieminister has catalysed this process, with excellent quality food, great prices, and a lovely venue in which to enjoy a pie as well. Found a new favorite for when I am in Manchester (or one of the handful of other cities lucky enough to have a Pieminister). I had seen them at the Borough Market in London a while back, but as I had no way to heat up a pie, I passed. Happy to discover them last night. I had the chicken and mushroom pie, which was delish. I went for the mothership and got mushy peas (for the first time - they were fun and minty), mash and gravy (who doesn't love mash and gravy), and a light cider. This was a very generous portion for the price and I plan to return in a few weeks with the boy. My affection for good solid food is growing. The more I travel, the less interested I am in fine dining and the more I just want something fun and tasty. And you can't beat their aesthetic. I love their marketing and the Live and Let Pie neon sign inside. Service was friendly but not pushy, and responded quickly when I made a request. I was there on a Monday night around 1830. Pieminister is really rather good, but I only got in on my second visit. The first time my friends and I tried to come for dinner and arrived at 6:01pm only to find a sign on the door saying they closed at six on that particular day. We were a bit bummed not to be let in, especially since we made it so close to closing, but no matter. We returned for lunch a few days later. The pies were excellent. We all ordered different pies (which I recommend ordering with gravy if nothing else) and i opted to go for a vegetarian option. It was VERY good and I'll definitely be back to sample more! Really really pleasantly surprised by this place, but, who doesn't love pie?! Another bestie jaunt, and on a chilly day, so pie is perfect. Nicely decked out in slightly old canteen feel, with a decent playlist of music in the background. These guys have a good choice of pies on offer, classic, veggie, rich, homely, even spicy, and every type of fentimans you could want... I had the deerstalker, as I'm a massive fan of game, but as a mothership, which is mash (a good dollop of creamy stuff), gravy (viscous and meaty, yum), oniony bits, and peas, all excellent, all tasty, and an actual gravy boat that isn't used for a flipping northern quarter cocktail, all for £7.95, I could be in love, made worse by my typical favourite that is rose lemonade. Best pie I have ever had in England. Had a mushroom and asparagus pie w/mash and peas at the Brudenell in Leeds. This while at a beer festival and watching the Man City vs Liverpool match. What a perfect day except for the result. I'm gonna be dreaming about this pie until my next visit. read more

I´d love to write something that nobody else has written already about the pieminister, but I just cannot. I liked it a lot. I played it safe and had the deerstalker mothership. And it was great. As was the value for money with this combo. Service was friendly and it´s a nice place to sit in. I have been looking forward to a proper pie and mash. @pieminister you will definitely won't be disappointed if you are looking for comfort and hearty meal. My hubby, D ordered the Mothership Moodog (beef steak, smoked bacon and @brewdogmancs Ale 5am pale ale) and I had the Chicken of Aragon (chicken, bacon and tarragon pie), which sound like a place from GOT. As I am sucker for mac and cheese (£7.50), I also ordered this too! These pies can be served in the following combination (all comes with gravy): 1. Pie and 1 Side (£7.50) 2. Pie & 2 Sides/ (£8.50) 3. Mothership (£9.00) (Pie and mash with minty mushy peas, cheese and crispy shallots) I have to say the name ( Chicken of Aragon-nnn ~echo echo~) may have sounded mighty but as you cut into it, it was not so much. The flavour is all there and you can definitely taste the tarragon herb. Pastry was buttery and well baked plus it was not heavily stodgy. I did expect some kind of sauce inside being a chicken pie but this was a bit dry as you cut in to it. Yet, that minty mushy peas compensated the dryness of my pie. It was sweet and well seasoned how good mushy peas should be with the beautiful colour of vibrant green rather than yellow moss colour green of overcooked peas. I did end up drenching my pie in gravy to balance it all out! In terms of D's pie, this was so scrumptious! It had the right ratio of gravy and meaty filling inside. It was definitely double thumbs up for me. I really love the pale ale taste in the pie as it gives a tangy flavour cutting through the smokey bacon. Mac & Cheese......full of flavour with a good coating of cheese on top like a lid as your fork dig into the first layer. It wasn't a cheese pulling worthy but that comes down to the type of cheese used. I love the flavour of strong mature cheddar taste but it was lacking the creamy sauce for the dish that I personally love for mac and cheese. I will definitely go back to try other pies especially the deer stalker. In terms of value it isn't that "deer" either! read more

Hit all the right places! The pie was just amazing mash was creamy and the gravy was amazing and it was so filling and it was cheap for the quality and the atmosphere is cosy. I went at night and the staff were super friendly food was also fast. read more

Wanting to lose weight and a Pieminister opens near my home... must... resist... ... Nope! Some of the best 'Simple' food in the city that is far beyond simple in anything but appearance (Unless you get a mothership, that looks downright complex). Water served without the awkward 'Can I have tap please' and offered with a smile (eating a pie during the day means I dont really like to drink anything with it). I have always loved a Pieminister pie (I used to buy them frozen from the local supermarket) so when Pieminister opened it's doors a minute away from my flat I thought Christmas had come early. I usually go for the Heidi - a gorgeous mix of goats cheese, sweet potato, spinach and red onion pie. The other half loves the Deerstalker - I think you can guess what's in there. We've been on numerous occasions now and there's nothing to fault. Ask for the Mothership and you get the pie on a bed of mash, peas and gravy - definitely go for this if you're eating in. I also went in to get a selection of pies for a party once, and the staff were SO lovely and helpful. I ordered 12 pies - they didn't even question it and were really efficient in getting everything sorted for me. Possibly the best bit about Pieminister is the wonderful girl who has served me almost every time I've been in there. She's got some of the best customer service skills I've seen in a long time - always approachable, friendly and would do anything to make sure your visit is perfect. read more
