Great lunch experience on a beautiful afternoon. Wonderful service too. I ordered the oysters and burrata caprese. The oysters were very fresh and plump, and the burrata along with the homemade pesto were so flavorful and rich. I could eat the caprese all day. A bit pricier than I expected, but the food was delicious.

WONDERFUL dining experience. If you are visiting Verona, I highly recommend you sample the local specialties well-represented on Alcova del Frate's menu. There is a different risotto special every night. The red wine risotto we had tonight was outstanding. The grilled veal with tuna sauce and tuna tartare was a bold success. Horse meat is not to something which my California palate is accustomed. The tenderloin was a delightfully flavorful adventure, though somewhat dry and gamy to my taste. The ham sampler gave us the opportunity to taste and compare a variety of hams from three regions prepared in three ways. Our favorite was the richly aromatic black-footed boar from Spain. For entrees, our favorite seemed to be the bigoli served with a donkey ragu. The handmade pasta flavorful and possessed distinctive texture. Make sure to save room for dessert. Alcavo del Frate operates its own gelateria, and their wild cherry, mint-chocolate, and stracciatella varieties did not disappoint. But the highlight among the desserts--and perhaps the show stopper of the entire evening--was the incredibly buttery tiramisu served in an ice cream cone. It very much the texture that a polar bear might appreciate of an Eskimo family's igloo--crunchy in the outside, soft on the inside.... Finally, our meal would not have been the same without our outstanding culinary guide and waiter, Simon. Let him suggest to you your menu for the night, and you will not be disappointed. Exceptional meal and quite inexpensively priced--less than 200 Euros for the eight of us!

3 types of ham (excellent) & the salad with walnuts, pine nuts, parmesan cheese & some crystalized pear gelee-best salad ever!

It was quiet when we arrived at noon and then filled up quite a lot by the time we departed. Clearly, a restaurant for the locals. First course, a big pile of a pasta called "bigolini" which I've not seen before. It is like thick spaghetti with a rough surface. That is needed because the sauce on it was quite thick and another interesting taste - nettles. Definitely different. Second course, risotto made with a red wine reduction. Very flavorful and rich and the pasta was perfectly al dente. We'll definitely need to return to here for dinner! [Review 16980 overall - 185 in Italy - 496 of 2022.]

The restaurant is very cute (free WiFi) and homey feeling with an exposed brick interior and interesting decoration choices throughout the space. If you're so inclined there's also and outdoor patio area. Maybe we just ordered poor menu items but the food was underwhelming and not particularly standout. For our anti pasta course we went with the cured meat trio with polenta. The meats weren't particularly good and combined with the bland polenta it just wasn't a good combo. For our primi pasta course we had the bigoli in a horse (yes horse) bolognese sauce. Of our three dishes this was the best. For our main meat course with did horse cheeks braised in an Amarone wine sauce with polenta. I didn't like the polenta any better on our second dish and the cheek just didn't do it for me. I ended up leaving the bulk of the dish uneaten. All in all-maybe I just ordered poorly but I if I ever make it back to Verona this spot will be a pass for me.

They have a nice garden terrace as well as a lovely dining room inside (with AC!). Started with mixed grilled vegetables and the house cured salmon which came with a bit of salad. They do have some pasta and specials of the day, but we all had pizza, of which there is a rather wide selection to choose from. I had the melanzane which was definitely the most delicious eggplant pizza I've ever had. My husband had the "Trentino" with had wild mushrooms, Emmentaler and speck. And my son had the Capricciosa (mix of various things including prosciutto, olives, artichokes, etc.) I tasted them all and they were all great. House wine: $12.50 for a liter. Awesome deal, very drinkable and went well with the pizza. Service was attentive and efficient. I hope to return while I am staying in Verona. It's a neighborhood gem with extremely reasonable prices, away from the tourist bustle of the centro historico.
