Ipswich Film Theatre closed down due to dwindling audiences a few years ago. A commercial chain took it over for a little while but, fortunately, soon left and moved on as they couldn't make enough money from the place. A group of cinephiles founded the Ipswich Film Theatre Trust and did a deal with the owners of the site (Ipswich Borough Council) and, staffed by volunteers, the place now offers the good people of Ipswich a reasonable range of independent, alternative, European and non-mainstream films three evenings a week. There are two cinemas: the larger one has had a cheap 'n' cheerful refit. While the new seats aren't the most comfortable seats in the world (or even in the Corn Exchange for that matter), you can get by for a couple of hours. The smaller cinema is an absolute treasure. Its tiny (it seats about 40) and the seats are very comfortable. There's an under-used area adjacent to the small cinema that is wasted (it should be a coffee bar) and there are two bars in the building but, shamefully, neither is open to serve a pint of real ale to accompany the real cinema. Overall, this is the kind of venue that needs a University film society to give it a shot in the arm and a kick in the pants: it should be open six evenings a week with the odd all-nighter schlock fest, along with decent beer and reasonable food on sale (anyone remember the wonderful days--and nights!--of The Scala at Kings Cross before it had to close?)

Much huffing and sighing later she let us in to Theatre 1 to see Elvis. It was freezing1 and the seats were hard and uncomfortable, turned in to a miserable experience. Couldn't wait to leave. There are two screens that are soon to be updated with all the latest technology and a simple shop selling sweets, popcorn and drinks. The screen sizes and sound systems don't match up to giant multiplex's but once the film starts you are engrosed anyway. The tickets prices are good and during the week they are even better (try on a Tuesday for the best bargain). Being in the centre of Felixstowe it is easy to find and there is ample parking at the side and over the road. Personally I would really like it if they invested in those big old fashioned posters over the top of the door (they have the space) and American 50's style popcorn sellers inside. However, they are modernising the whole place so it looking better every week, the films are modern enough and are usually only a week or two behind the 'big ones'. The seats are comfortable enough and mid week you can sometimes get a whole screen for a group of you giving a sense of relaxed atmosphere. The ticket price alone you draw you in as those multiplexes are charging far too much nowadays. Well worth a visit!!!

There are only one screen that is more a stage with a white back drop but it does feel authentic and the seats and sound are to an expectable level. However when first walking in there is a slight smell of feet but you soon get use to it and see it as an authentic quirk. All in all the people are friendly and the location are ideal especially in summer. Be aware there are parking charges and it can not be claimed back like some other cinema complexes.

The venue holds a fair few hundred and there are the traditional ice cream seller in the breaks and a bar and restaurant if you want to make a night of it. Does what it says on the tin really…read more It's a pretty building on the slant of a hill. It has mighty pillars and is a good community space. They show projections of movies which is the next best thing to going to a city cinema. Clothes sales and plays happen there as well.

Not only is it a lovely memorial to the 95th bomb group, it was positively buzzing. An operating coffee shop & bar, live music, stalls and vintage vehicles make this a great place to visit.
