APPOINTMENT TIME: He's strict on his time, so much that if you come early or aren't scheduled, you may not get your hair cut. I arrived 2 hours early as I was out of work early, arrived at the shop to find no one there. The owner came from across the street. Chair was empty, and he had a good 15 min before his next customer. Luckily, that appt arrived early, and I waited so I wouldn't have to come back. THE CUT / THE PRICE: Terrible haircut. One of the worst of my life. I moved from Brooklyn, NY this July, and have a bit of a hipster haircut. Short on the sides, long on the top. How can you go wrong? There was no fade at all. After I got home, showered, and realized the hack job on my hair, I took out my own shears and re-cut/blended my hair appropriately. The sides weren't evenly cut. It was a complete mess. I couldn't even style the unevenness with hairspray or gels. AND THE PRICE?! $20 Bucks plus tip? For a men's basic haircut? Brooklyn was cheaper, weighing in at $16.00 for a great cut, that looked perfect from the first cut. REDEMPTION?: I usually give people a second chance to redeem themselves; however this cut was so bad, I'd never go back. My theory: if your barber chair isn't occupied at all times as a barber, then you're likely not good. PARKING: None; Find street parking and pay the meter. Plenty of bike parking. THE PRO: With that being said, if you have a short military cut, then he's fine for that. The customer just before me left with a perfect looking haircut. Maybe it was just a bad day for me. The shop vib is laid back, relax. The owner was actually a decent guy, personality wise; he was very sociable and down-to-earth. I'd read about these hipster-Brooklyn barber shops in the NYTimes so after checking this place out online, I was real hyped up about coming here. Looked really cool outside & in (dimly lit, Apple computer, street art books, jazz playing), & the happy customer photos made me want to be like Mike. So I got a cut & shave ($25) & it was a very mixed experience. Long story short: I got home, looked in the mirror, & busted out w/ the scissors, Mach razor, & hand mirror. Hair-wise, there were a lot of missed spots (tufts, not strands) on the top/sides/back & shave-wise, the lower portion of my face felt & looked like a prickly cactus. I was pissed & vowed never to fall for the hype again, but at the same time, I enjoyed sitting in that chair & being taken care of (while there, I tried to be as hopeful & positive as possible but the tsunami of reality hit me like a 2 x 4). I was shocked & disappointed. I don't want to micromanage people who should be more knowledgeable than me. I just want to sit, chill, & enjoy the experience, then get up, pay, & walk away looking like a million bucks, not a food stamp card. The irony of this experience is that I was hoping to find an escape from the bad haircuts you get at chain stores full of beginner I-don't-know-what-I-want-to-do-with-my-life hacks who can't cut it (pun intended) anywhere else. Also from the old barbers who give you outdated hairstyles & offer you porn and the beauty salons full of estrogen. This place izza RZA fo' shizza hack in hip clothing. The search continues for an intuitive barber... #OnwardAndUpward! This is more of a one-time novelty thing that curious guys (remember what happened to the cat?) need to get out of their system just to say that they tried it, but did not inhale. Thumbs down. Customer, beware. In the ongoing battle between Style vs. Substance, I say, "Go Substance! Go elsewhere" (yes, it was that bad). The only good thing that came out of this mess was the compliments I got on Monday at work about how nice I looked after shaving my face & cutting my own hair. Two stars seems harsh, but honestly I'm not sure I'd rate my experience here A-OK. Firstly - I quite liked the space. It was well designed, kind of quirky and cool, and very open (literally, the garage door was open). The haircut I got was good - it just wasn't quite what I asked for. I asked for a mohawk - including the tail in the back. I didn't realize until the end of the haircut that the back was entirely shaved, and I only had length left on the top. At least it was cut evenly and only cost $20. Now I just have to wait to grow it out to get the look I wanted to begin with. The experience during the cut wasn't my favorite. While I prefer the person cutting my hair to be focused on my hair, not conversation, I also don't want to be entirely bored. The barber started blasting music as soon as I sat down, and then tried to converse with me over the music, constantly asking me to repeat myself because he couldn't hear me. Wtf? Do you want me to shut up and listen to your jams, or to have a conversation? I can't do both! I wanted to give them a try given all of the hype on here, but at the end of the day, I think I'm more comfortable in the right quiet salon where the stylist washes my hair, blow dries away all the little hair clippings so I'm not covered in them all day, and seems to give a shit about what I asked for. read more

I was greeted at the door by Adam upon arrival. He was very friendly and welcoming, and the shop, while small, was pretty comfortable and had a stylish vibe. I was a bit apprehensive and this immediately put me at ease. I had been seeing the same stylist for several years and this was my first attempt at developing a new relationship. I'm not one of those guys who know what all the new styles are called or which blades to use, but Adam listened to what I wanted. Usually when I need to get a haircut, I kind of dread it... I have curly/nappy hair that most barbers don't know how to deal with well. Seeing some of the positive reviews for Adam, I gave him a try and really loved his shop and the haircut I got. To setup an appointment, you just text him and set up a time. I think every time I have texted him, he's gotten back to me in ~15-20 minutes or so (or less). The atmosphere of the shop is really laid back, Adam's a pretty chill guy. His shop kind of feels like a weird secret, it's in what looks like an old garage behind the shops/restaurants on Highland Ave, in Shadyside. It's one of the best haircuts I have ever gotten, and Adam is SUPER quick. I'm usually lax in going to the barber, so I typically have a lot of hair to work with when I show up at some shops. I went to another barber and it took them an hour (maybe a bit more) to deal with my hair. Adam got me in and out in ~20 minutes and generally makes things really easy. Nothing fussy or complicated about this place. The Barber simply asked what I wanted Once I told him, he began his work like a true craftsman. He cut my hair with such precision and concentration. Simply a great experience. I was in town for work and needed a haircut. Not a trim, a full blown cut. The beard needed work as well...I was basically a cave-man looking for some help. Found the shop on Yelp, and the reviews seemed strong enough to make me make an appointment. Spoke to Adam directly, he asked what I was coming in for and then fit me right in. Showed up 5 minutes early, easy parking, and walked into an awesome little shop. Relaxed feel in the place, I hung out for a couple of minutes while the previous client finished up - he was clearly a regular, and left happy. Stepping into the chair, Adam was friendly and asked what I wanted to do, and then actually listened to what I wanted. After that he went to work, and he did an excellent job. He's clearly capable in giving you any type of modern or popular style that you'd want, while still having a unique touch that'll make your look killer, and the price is definitely right.
