I like the lower prices, but I'm getting wary of the quality of fruits and veggies here. Better stick to the deals for the non-perishables. read more

This is your typical Lidl store that sells an assortment of food and household products. I saw…read moresome carry-on luggage for sale at another branch earlier this week, so my bf and I tried to buy it from this store today. But unfortunately they were all out. The thing about Lidl is that sometimes they have really good weekly specials, but you have to be quick to grab the deals while supplies last. I also saw some refrigerated cookie dough for Spitzbueben, so perhaps something to try one day to save some effort instead of making everything from scratch.
Cool discount store on the ground floor of the Center Passage shopping mall. Hard to explain…read moreexactly what they sell--kind of like a mish-mash of random gift items you would find in a Spencer's gifts in the U.S., combined with random stationery stuff and household items. I like to browse for cute, relatively inexpensive household stuff here to jazz up my place. For example, I picked up some cute butterfly decorations to place around my balcony. Also found a cute analog food scale in hot pink... perfect for my baking needs. But they had lots of other colors to choose from, too. Also found some functional stuff, like potholders made out of blue jean material, wall hooks, drink coasters, and sink drainers. Another great thing about this place--they accept credit card transactions! You don't even get that at Aldi or Lidl. Perfect for earning extra UBS Keyclub points. ;)

This particular review is on the latter, but I've visited both stores in Switzerland before. Both are--to various degrees--kind of like a 99 Cent Store or Dollar Tree in the U.S., but they don't sell fresh food here. This particular one had quite an extensive collection of Hello Kitty-branded items. I was tempted to outfit my entire apartment with Hello Kitty-themed tissue boxes, napkins, liquid soap, etc., until I came to my senses and reminded myself that I wasn't a 12-year-old girl anymore. It's always fun to scout around in these shops to find some cool stuff for cheap cheap cheap! I picked up a cute hot pink apple slicer/corer, a poofy back scrubber, a microwave splatter cover, and two rainbow-colored luggage bands. All quite functional--especially the luggage bands, which will come in handy to circumvent another disaster after someone mistakenly took my generic-looking black suitcase at the Kuala Lumpur airport last December. I gave one of the luggage bands to my bf, who promptly remarked that people will now think we are representing gay pride. Oops. I guess it's not a bad thing, but it wasn't my original intention when purchasing those items. Anyhow, I'm glad I finally visited this shop, and I'm quite pleased with my purchases.

They have Heinz and Jack Daniels barbecue sauce here, woo-hoo!! I've never bothered to go to this…read morestore until last week, because I was told that it was filled with expired stuff. But last Saturday I decided to check it out, and lol and behold, the merchandise was NOT expired. In fact, I was elated to find some familiar American stuff that I don't always see in Switzerland (i.e., the BBQ sauce). Yipee! I also found a cool wine pourer and cap combo for under Sfr. 2.- It worked so well to prevent wine drips that I went back today to get another set. This store is a little akin to a ROSS Dress for Less or a T.J. Maxx in the U.S. but with a smaller selection of stuff. And Otto's also sells alcohol. I think it's worth a browse from time to time to pick up some deals. Tried to look for some ranch dressing today, but I haven't seen that so far in Switzerland. :P
