According to the Guardian ad Litem's written recommendations, the proposed plan included: * restricting my parenting time to supervised visits followed by alternating weekends; * delaying equal timesharing for approximately six months; * recommending that the father receive sole decision-making authority for education, medical care, psychiatric care, therapy, and medications; * recommending that reunification therapy continue under Gina Aguinaga until my child was considered "properly and sufficiently reunified"; * recommending that reunification therapy restart if future problems occurred. As a parent, I was deeply concerned because my child has documented PTSD, severe anxiety, trauma-related symptoms, and Type 1 diabetes, and treating providers documented concerns regarding his emotional well-being, anxiety, and therapeutic stability. In my opinion, the recommendations did not sufficiently reflect the concerns raised by the professionals who had actually been treating my child over time. Families considering reunification therapy should carefully ask how a child's treating providers' opinions, documented diagnoses, and therapeutic progress will be considered throughout the process.

I sought reunification therapy believing my child's emotional safety would be the highest priority…read more I was repeatedly told that therapy would not move forward unless my child felt safe. However, my experience was very different. Despite my child's repeated statements that he did not feel safe, documented concerns from his treating mental health providers, and evidence regarding the family history that I believed was highly relevant, a recommendation was made to separate him from me. As a survivor of domestic violence, this experience was devastating. I left feeling that my child's voice was not truly heard and that trauma-informed care was not applied in the way I had been led to expect. I hope future families receive a process where a child's expressed safety concerns are consistently given meaningful consideration.
