The store is deceptively large (the downstairs section is *huge*) and the selection is SUPERB. In particular, the photography books - including some rather obscure types (such as a big section of photo books about trams/etc., which happens to be one of my passionate interests) - were extraordinary in their breadth. My initial impression of the sales clerks was negative, as they seemed very unfriendly. There were only three of them in evidence in that large store and one of them was at the check-out (on the upper level), so I think that was problematic - as evidenced by the fact that a customer approached me and thought I worked there (that also happened in Oslo - three days ago - and there, too, sales clerks were an endangered species). When we were leaving Hedengrens, one of the originally-unfriendly sales clerks was much friendlier. The other reason why I'm giving four stars instead of five - since the selection certainly merits five stars - is because this store charges more money for books than Akademibokhandeln (the reason why I know that is because I'd made note of some books I wanted to buy when we were at a branch of Akademibokhandeln yesterday, but I wanted to visit larger stores and buy everything all at one time. I'd noted the prices of the books [apropos of nothing, although it turned out to be very fortuitous]. I was really surprised about the pricing differential, because I'd never experienced that in any other country). Anyway; I certainly recommend visiting this store, as it's a real treat to browse there.

Sadly, there are few large bookstores left in Stockholm. this one is OK but I miss the large…read morestores from years ago. I was disappointed that there were not many history books in Swedish; instead, the English section was quite large.

Emmaus is by far my number-one second-hand shopping stop in Stockholm. And that's not a statement…read moreto be taken lightly - I live on Södermalm, home of plenty of vintage and second-hand shops, and I visit them regularly. I am a total second-hand addict. Choose something with massive shoulder pads, call it vintage, and triple the price? No thanks. I prefer real second-hand - it's a treasure hunt of good deals. And Emmaus is the best! Why? For one, their selection is always changing. It's close to my work so sometimes I go there multiple days in a row and always see new things. It's also affordable. If you're shopping second hand then you don't want to end up paying a lot. Some shops on Södermalm, like Stadsmission by Nytorget, jack up the prices to ridiculous levels, but Emmaus has second-hand prices as they should be. You can easily get a great new dress for anything from 50 to 100 SEK - and sometimes they have sales where all dresses (for instance) are half off! The staff here do know their brands, so if you find something by a designer then it will typically reflect that in the price. But it will still be a great bargain! People are friendly here, and you can put an item on layaway for a day. Sometimes they even have 'parties' during the summer where they offer free snacks and have a DJ, which makes for a fun and unique thrifting experience. I always end up finding something here - a dress, a book I've been meaning to read, a gorgeous set of vintage tea cups, the Swedish game kubb, a new hat, beautiful t-strap heels. There's something for everyone if you just look!
