With a large number of very high Yelp ratings, we decided to walk over to Ali Baba... My wife had the Turkish apple tea and a Greek salad... outstanding for both... I had the Anatolian casserole and Turkish coffee... the casserole had lamb mixed in with an assortment of diced vegetables and aromatic spices... simply incredible along with potatoes, rice, and pickled salad sides... Other than that, the rest of the food was delicious, the waitress was so nice oh, the cooks were fantastic, and it was such a cute clean little restaurant. We would definitely come back here again. The food at Ali Baba is really good, flavorful, and tasty. The lavash bread is freshly baked and light and good with the hummus. They might have the best hummus on the island. The Kofte casserole is unique dish that has meatballs, tomato sauce, and cheese. Overall, the food is great though the location is a little back from the street so you might miss it when walking by on Ashford but don't miss out on the opportunity to enjoy their delicious food. read more

Won't be coming here again. Service was slooooow and awkward. They weren't that busy and it shouldn't take 20 minutes to get a bottle of beer. The food took even longer - and when it arrived - it wasn't even enough to fill our appetites. Plus we saw two other tables seated after us receive their food (and there were only two of us and eight of them!) WAY overpriced, the Greek salad tasted like frozen vegetables dethrawed. Food took over an hour (after they kept saying it was "on the grill" "five more minutes"). I watched three families arrive an eat their full meal, pay and get on with their night before I got my meal. NO explanation and NO comps whatsoever. 78 dollars for not a ton of food and the worst service I have ever received. After forty minutes we tried to get our bill and leave but they refused to give it. Seriously, they didn't even give a shit. There are many other restaurants within walking distance, I recommend giving the competition some business so these people remember how to give good service. PASS. read more

Great food at great price. Casual atmosphere. Attentive server. Appetizer ezme, hummus and feta tomato salad--all delicious. You can see the olive oil on the hummus was serious with green color. I had chicken kabob entree--very good. Fiancée had sliced lamb dish--he liked it a lot. My daughter boneless lamb chops. We think that was the best on the table. Dessert we shared a homemade baklava. We came here first two years ago and had a nice but not memorable experience. We were back in town this week and decided to have a late lunch/early dinner here before heading back to the airport. What a disappointment for our last meal on a trip full of outstanding meals! The seating area outside is cute and the servers were friendly but weren't really coordinating their service. We'd get asked multiple times for things. Ok, no biggie, rather than then completely inattentive. We ordered a gyro sandwich a falafel sandwich and hummus to start. The prices are outrageous for what they are. I can get the most amazing falafel for less than half of what I paid here back in ct, and this one really didn't have much taste. The gyro was good and the winner of the meal. But when we were served our sandwiches we still hadn't gotten the starter hummus. When we asked about it the server literally argued with us as to whether we had ordered it and went back to get his order pad to prove that he didn't write it down. Ok, weird reaction when we asked perfectly nicely. When we finally got it, the lavash was warm and lovely. Hummus was good not outstanding. The server also wouldn't swap out my fries for anything and instead told me I could pay 5 for a salad. No thanks. So, weak food and service makes it not worth it. As an American Turk visiting PR, I was expecting an average Turkish cuisine experience at best; there are only two Turkish restaurants on the island, so you could say the expectations were quite low. The head chef and owner is Turkish and was manning the kitchen. It was comforting to see that no dish would make its way to a customer without his approval. My friend and I started with the homemade pita bread; it was excellent alongside the hummus and later our entree. We had the mixed grill option so that we could try all the popular entrees. With that said, there isn't anything that we wouldn't recommend. They offered homemade hot sauces on the side which is quite unusual for Turkish cuisine, but it was a nice touch! The Turkish black tea (çay) was just right; not too dark and not too light. We were more than happy to leave the restaurant in agreement that it was in both of our personal Top Ten Turkish Restaurants lists and we've been to more than we can count. read more

This restaurant made us realize how overpriced basically all of the restaurants in the touristy areas are. Food - 3/5 Gozleme - This was basically a quesadilla was filled with a lot of spinach and feta cheese. It was definitely cooked in too much oil, but I loved that it has more spinach than cheese. Chicken ottoman casserole - This dish was big enough for two people to share. The chicken was tender and cooked with peppers and onions. It came with a side of roasted potatoes and pickled cabbage. This isn't how I normally like my chicken cooked, but my boyfriend loved it. Overall, the food was pretty good, but it was just so overpriced. So Good. We had lunch and it was delicious. We started with hummus and the lavash bread. I eat a lot of hummus and this was one of the best I've had. The lavash bread is made fresh on site and was hot and perfect. We also had the Kofte casserole - think meatballs in a tomato based sauce with cheese. It comes with rice and a cold potatoes and a cabbage salad. Everything was flavorful and cooked nicely. On top of it all the customer service was excellent, and the place itself was very cute. The rating is related to the quality of food vs. the cost. I do not think water, a small appetizer, a dinner size salad (with dry chicken), and a just so-so chicken kabab platter should equal $50. Ali Baba is a hidden gem that I probably wouldn't find unless I used Yelp. We ordered the tatziki and hummus appetizer served with lavash. Both were delicious but the tatziki had fresh garlic that, while delicious, made me taste garlic on everything I ate for the next 24 hours. I ordered the vegetarian moussaka for my entree and it was delivered to the table in a fancy tureen. Another fantastic choice at Ali Baba. Interesting that my favorite meal in Puerto Rico was at this hole in the wall Middle Eastern restaurant... It's truly a gem, hidden in a dark, narrow walkway between two buildings. No natural sunlight shines through its two windows. Dim lights illuminate the dining area. Servers are dressed like Aladdin, and it made me laugh. There was, however, no magic carpet or monkey running around stealing food, though that would have been quite comical. The food was actually very good. Not that I have traveled to the Middle East, but I have had my fair share of Middle Eastern cuisine, and have developed somewhat of a taste for its flavors, enough to know that this place has some good food. If I'm ever in PR again, I wouldn't mind stopping by here again for a bite to eat. read more

Yummy yummy yummy! What a delight to get awesome Turkish food across the street from our hotel! We came here twice during our stay -- once for lunch and the second time for dinner. There weren't toooo many vegetarian options, but enough to satisfy our bellies. The first time we got falafel and a veggie sandwich, and the second time we got more falafel and the veggie casserole. All were amazing (although the falafel could have used a lot more lettuce according to my dad haha), but the best part was hands-down the hot, fresh lavash bread!!! Mmmm so good, we carbo-loaded a bit and got another order each time. Service was a bit meh. We had the same waiter both times (a student from Spain). He definitely improved the second time and was much nicer as well. I felt bad because he was telling my dad about his struggles and finding a stable job and whatnot, so I'm using this platform to wish him the best of luck! Fun fact: the owner is (not surprisingly) from Turkey and was previously married to a native Puerto Rican woman who owns the fair trade store next door. Although now Yelp is reporting the store as closed, it was amazing with beautiful items from around the Middle East/South Asia. My husband and I came here for dinner, we had our fill of Caribbean cuisine and were looking for something different, and not another "fusion" type of restaurant. This place hit the spot! A+ for the food - They specialize in lamb dishes, and I am definitely not a lover of the meat but my husband is. I tried their casserole with mixed meats (chicken, beef, lamb) and it was delicious! My husband also enjoyed his iskender meal as well. The BEST part was the baklava. Seriously some of the best I've ever eaten. So good, we actually ended up eating 2 of them since we devoured the first one and wanted more. The portions are large, decently priced and we had enough leftovers for a tasty breakfast the next morning A++ for the staff - They were fabulous! They were very helpful in describing the dishes, and we both were happy with our choices. Everyone was really attentive, welcoming and friendly. When they found out we were on our honeymoon, they brought us a baklava on the house... that's why we didn't hesitate to order the 2nd one, with ice cream on top. Perfect end to a fantastic meal. . The appetizers were AMAZING. I got the Adana kebab - it was ok- the meat was a little too densely packed for my taste and overall it was just so rich. But the appetizers, omg. The bread, with ezme, tadziki, and an eggplant side (imam bayaldi) were killer as were these spinach feta things we got. Food is so fresh, service is stellar. We ordered five appetizers as a meal: falafel, imam bayildi, dolma, and kasarli pide. We were on vacation in PR and have had some great Puerto Rican food. I will say this was a refreshing light meal in contrast to the local cuisine. I'm middle eastern and have eaten a lot of middle eastern food in my life. I came here with my family last night for our first dinner in San Juan. Everything was SO GREAT! The food was the best turkish food I've ever had, the decor was lovely and the service was beyond amazing. It made up for our bad lunch experience we had earlier today.
