I received 10% off my order :) It was loaded into my car and I was so grateful. They offered me a glass of Scotch or Bourbon. How nice! It was a little early for me to start drinking, but I'll take a rain check. There is usually a tasting of some sort on a weekly basis. The sandwich board at the front has the details. Really impressed with the beer selection as well. Nice, clean family run store.

They are so helpful, so fun and so focused on helping you find your perfect brew. They have jugs along the back wall where the Kegs are located, so you can try out a draft or two and then take a jug of it home with you - I believe it stays fresh for quite a while too, as long as it is sealed properly. They have tastings classes and beer nights. Invite beer and liquor reps in for events. A big shout out to the Beer Geeks! The selection of liquor is also very good as is the wine. Last time I was in they had a table up front of *sale vino! I assume this is to get older stock out of the way/make room for new vintages. What ever the reason, I love picking up a great bottle and getting a deal! It is very conveniently located for all of us who live on the South Side. Just off the Whytemud on 99th before it turns into Parsons Road. My only gripe... Twice I have showed up on a Sunday, forgetting they are closed ;p

However, I'm not a wine drinker, so it didn't really feel like a good deal for me. I would've rathered they include the apron instead. The class runs from 6-9pm, which was a little on the later side for me to really want to eat, but I guess when you're running a class on a weekday, you have to accommodate work end times. Class is in a conveniently located Grant Macewan building, and it includes parking in the campus parkade across the street. The classroom is very nice. There's a large family style table and then the kitchen area. The set up of the class itself is a little awkward. We sat around the kitchen prep area, which would've benefited from some mirrors so we can see what the instructor was doing. They do have cameras behind the instructor, but then the TV screens are located behind you, which really doesn't help much at all unless you keep turning around to look at it. The instructor did encourage students to come around and watch, but after a long day at work, sitting and watching is more preferable.. The instructor was good, very informative. The other kitchen staff were nice as well. It was a fun experience, and they offer a variety of classes, it's just the price point is a little on the higher side compared to other cooking classes offered in the city. Take out boxes are provided if you have leftovers or want to share what you've made. Recipes from the class are also provided.

Friends and I stopped by for happy hour- select pints of beer are on special for $5. I tried the Mangolorian and Main Squeeze. They were so refreshing! I like that they offer some inexpensive snacks, like popcorn. The decorations are interesting too! It's fun to look at all of the labels that the brewery has used. Alley Kat supports the community, which is important to me. During the Alberta Teachers' Strike, they offered a free pint. Thank you, you are appreciated!

I saw many familiar faces from previous events Alley Kat had served at including the fabulous Kristin :-) What's not to love about my beer name doppleganger who also loves kats and wears kat prints? MeOwSeRs!!! I digress... Alley Kat was warm and inviting from the moment we arrived at 5PM. They had freshly made soft pretzels on hand along with cheese and meat nibbles to compliment the launch. Now, let's get to the good stuff... The BEER! Hubby and I were on cloud 9 that our favourite Alley Kat Beer - Freshly Squeezed (with real grapefruit) was still on tap and EVEN BETTER they had 4 packs of it for sale! Our local liquor store only had it in a combo pack but this was like finding a giant bag of your favourite one of a kind Jelly Belly Flavours - Yes, kids... Freshly Squeezed is that good! ( And Yay! It keeps getting better! Just checked out their webiste: www.AlleyKatBeer.com and noted: The Summer Squeeze Grapefriut Ale has taken Alberta beer drinkers by storm. You've been enjoying it so much that it is here to stay. Our Summer Squeeze has become our Main Squeeze. With the inclusion of Grapefruit into our core line up we will be discontinuing the seasonal six pack. ) The launch party was held to feature their fall releases: Alley Kat's Dragon Series Alley Kat brews their Double IPA Dragon Series for hop fans. A new single hopped Double IPA will be released every two months using a different hop variety and sold under a different color of dragon. Current Dragon: Maroon Dragon Release date: October 1st Hop Variety: Centennial Alley Kat is back on the Dragon train with Maroon Dragon DIPA. This Centennial hopped double IPA has floral and citrus aroma with notes of light malt and loads of citrus hop. Brewed in limited quantities so get yours before its all gone! I will admit that I'm usually a wine and girly girly drinker so the Maroon Dragon was completely out of my league. But my fellow drinkers assured me that it was an excellent man's beer - SUPER HOPPY! Do you think they will release an Easter Bunny Hop? Bahahaha! Okay, I'll stop ;-) And my favourite of their Fall Releases: Alley Kat's Big Bottle Series As a way of celebrating great tasting beer, Alley Kat's own Big Bottle series is a toast to all brewmasters and lovers of ale, alike. Cheers, and drink up! Current Big Bottle: Pumpkin Pie Spiced Ale Release Date: Sept 2, 2013 September marks the return of Alley Kat's Pumpkin Pie Ale. This delicious full-bodied beer is infused with pumpkin, ginger and cinnamon. Pumpkin Pie Spiced Ale is like the Fall season personified! And the big bottle packaging is cute and the perfect accompaniment to bring to your Thanksgiving dinner next week! So go snag a few bottles and treat the Beer Lovers in your life to a fabulous limited edition treat! While at the Launch Party we got to partake in a fabulous Brewery tour where I learned that Alley Kat is the oldest microbrewery in Alberta at the tender age of 19 and the 4th oldest Brewery in Alberta. They use recycled bottles boys and girls... That's right, feel good and green when you support your local Kat! Alley Kat also recycles it's spent grains into cattle feed and does their best to use all local and West Coast ingredients! Yay Alley Kat! You've got a friend in me :-) I can't wait to see what will be re-released for Christmas or what new creation you will come up with? Perhaps a Holly Hops? PS - Bring Back CRINGER (Cranberry Ginger)!

The place was quite neat and well organized. The instructor started off by getting everyone an apron and providing some basic safety guidelines. Then she moved on to explain what they were going to cook for that session. The instructor got the the kids who were in the 6-10 year old range engaged quite well. The kids made some tacos, some guacamole as well as mockaritos (virgin margaritas) as well. I can't comment on the taste of the food because I didn't try it. However the kids seemed to enjoy it and were quick to finish off their plates. Overall the kids enjoyed this unique birthday party experience. I am seriously considering teaming up with them for maybe an office team building session.

There were 9 adults and 4 children (the youngest was 3 years old). Once we entered the kitchen, we separated into our small groups of 2-3 people (mothers paired with their daughters). Pheap (the owner) had already measured and prepared all the ingredients for us. During the class we didn't have to follow any recipes (she shares her recipes via email). We saved a lot of time and were able to make a lot of food! Pheap would demonstrate each step before we would try to do them. She was extremely organized. We had plenty of space to work and all the tools we needed to get the job done. There were sinks nearby so we could wash our hands whenever we needed to. We didn't have to deal with sharp knives, powered kitchen tools or hot ovens, so this activity was safe and kid friendly! We rolled dough, made mini pie crusts, put the crusts into the tins, mixed ingredients and decorated cakes! Pheap put all our food into a fast cooking oven. She did all the planning and hard work for us! All we had to do was relax and have fun! I had an AMAZING time here! In a mere 3 hours, we made mini quiche, mini blueberry pies, scones, macaroons, cucumber sandwiches, strawberry parfaits and we decorated mini 3 tiered cakes! Not only did I experience my first ever High Tea, but I was proud in knowing that I participated in making the food! Afterwards we enjoyed our food in the beautiful dining area! This was an excellent way to spend quality time with family and friends! Check out the menus on the Palates website and see what types of food you might want to make. There are so many options to choose from! I definitely recommend this place!

As someone who loves to experience different cultures through…read morefood, I am thrilled to finally begin to see Indigenous cuisine on the Edmonton / Amiskwaciwâskahikan / culinary tapestry. I am a firm believer that tasting a culture's food builds some of the strongest bridges and I only hope to see more of this coming out of our vibrant Indigenous community. Pei Pei Chei Ow (pronounced "pe-pe-s-chew") is an incredible place to start. They're serving post-colonial Indigenous food - but not only that. It's an immersive experience as you dine inside of the Whiskeyjack Art House located in McCauley, surrounded by beautiful Indigenous-made works of art. Nominated as one of Canada's Best New Restaurants 2022 in enRoute magazine and named Best Lunch Restaurant 2023 in EDify Magazine, I couldn't possibly wait to try this restaurant for myself. I wasn't sure what to expect but was so completely open to anything and everything. Entering the small foyer area, you will find a counter at which to place your food order as well as a small "store" area selling a variety of locally-made Indigenous goods. I jumped in immediately and began to peruse the multiple chalkboard menus and chatted with the friendly and helpful staff member. The restaurant closes quite early each day (they're open until 6pm) which is why they're largely considered a great spot for lunch. I visited for an early dinner on a Saturday and ran the risk of some of the items being sold out already. Unfortunately, two of the menu items were sold out by the time that I arrived but thankfully neither were ones that I had been intending to order. However, the lesson here is that for the best selection, visiting for lunch probably is advisable. We placed our order and selected a place to sit. Seating is extremely minimal. In the front area there is a two-top and some counter seating with about three stools. But if you venture just a little bit further into the gallery you will be met with the best seat in the house. A lone table for four in the larger gallery space, surrounded by fine Indigenous art. The result is a truly special dining experience, combining cuisine with beautiful visuals. It would have been nice to include some Indigenous music to really complete the sensory story. I loved the added touch of a vase of sage leaves on the table. This felt like a true hidden gem immersive experience and I was honoured to be a part of it. With Scott Jonathan Iserhoff at the helm, Pei Pei Chei Ow focuses on flavourful contemporary Indigenous cuisine based on local sustainably harvested ingredients and inspired by traditional recipes with a modern twist. Inspired by the land, life, and seasons that surround us, the menu explores and highlights Indigenous food in today's society. Starting with beverages you will discover a cimarronez coffee and a sweetgrass iced coffee on the menu - and they also have a beverage loyalty card which would be very handy for grabbing coffees on the go. I was most interested in the Mee-Ni-Sha-Piy (Saskatoon berry soda - $6.00). Indigenous to Alberta, Saskatoon berries are a huge pride of the prairies. Sipping the delicate and effervescent beverage I couldn't help but notice that it reminded me of shrub - a drink made with a drinking vinegar syrup, Turns out, I wasn't far off. Mee-Ni-Sha-Piy is made with muddled berries, sugar, and apple cider vinegar. This mixture is then combined with soda to create a lovely and unique beverage that is clean and refreshing. A must for the summer! I was excited to order the Three Sisters salad which is made with corn, squash, and beans. When planted side by side, these three crops help each other during growth, resulting in better yields at harvest. I loved the idea of presenting this concept in the form of a salad. Unfortunately, our server came back to our table to report that the salad was no longer up to the correct quality and that they would have to serve us something else. They then went above and beyond to correct this situation. Not only were we served the Spring Salad ($15.00) instead, but we were also given complimentary Arancini ($12.00) and three Tarts ($4.00 each). This was totally unnecessary but completely wonderful! What seemed like a simple spring salad revealed itself to be so much more. This dish was the biggest surprise of the meal for me because I didn't expect to enjoy it as much as I did. Beautifully fresh greens were accented by verdant leaves of mint. Puffed wild rice created a crunchy, textural dream. Slices of fresh apple brought a sweet acidity. Incredibly balanced, this salad was a delight. The one Indigenous food that most people have tried is Bannock ($2.00 per piece) and so of course I needed to taste the Pei Pei Chei Ow version. Bannock is a simple pan-fried Indigenous bread that is somewhat dense in texture and usually has a really delicious and caramelized crust. Add a pinch of salt and you're in for a heavenly treat!
