I saw an article about RailCycling, and we thought we'd give it a try. We were not disappointed! So what are RailCycles? Think of a tandem recumbent bike, that runs on train tracks. We started at a historic train station in Unity (unfortunately, we were there too early to partake of the ice cream shop that was housed in one of the buildings, but we did browse a soap shop). Check out the tiny museum, which doubles as a rudimentary gift shop. We then sat down on our Cycle. They are somewhat adjustable for height, but not completely. I'm short (5' tall), and the closest I could get to the pedals had me reaching, because of the placement of the brake cable. When I tried one of the others, the closer setting was too close (maybe sized for a child). My seat also seeped water (though it hadn't rained for days), and I ended up with a very wet butt. The seats also aren't very wide, so take that into account. Once we got started, it was a lot of fun - one major roadway across which Logan stopped traffic so we could cross, followed by a stretch of track that traversed the woods with their beautiful fall colors, then hugged past Unity Pond, through a swampy area (where we were treated to three lovely herons flying past), and across a railroad bridge before stopping to turn around and head back. All the while we pedaled steadily, getting exercise as well as a fun ride through the woods. When we did reach that halfway point, I was disappointed - it all goes by so quickly! The entire trip takes an hour or so. It's not a difficult pedal, though there are some slight grades (remember, these are train tracks, and trains don't do well going up and down hills). I think that if the group (there were five couples, including us) were having trouble keeping up, our guide would have slowed down to accommodate us. But if you're looking for a strenuous workout, you won't find it here. We enjoyed the ride, spent some time together laughing, talking and taking in the scenery - great activity for a beautiful autumn day in Maine. Longer would have been better for us, but Logan did say that a longer ride is planned for October!

2025 update: Justin…read moreand Jocelyn are still killing it! As mentioned before, this trip isn't for everyone, but if you're not the target audience, you're probably not reading this. Jocelyn's food is amazing, and she takes good care of me an my food allergies. The crew is amazing and friendly, and you can't beat the sea air. We just competed our third trip in 2 years and will be back aboard again in a month! ---- The cabins are what you would expect on a 100+ year old sailing vessel, but if you're reading this, you're already someone who will likely appreciate the authenticity of the experience over the luxury of the big "floating hotel" cruise ships. Captains Justin and Jocelyn couldn't be nicer, Jocelyn and her kitchen helpers put on some amazing meals given that they're all cooked on a wood stove and with minimal room to move around! Honestly, if you are the sort of person to whom this sort of adventure appeals, this is the ship for you. It's obviously not for everyone, and that's okay. But 5/5 stars for whose of us to whom it appeals!

We couldn't get over how incredible the food was, our favorites were the salmon, halibut, clam chowder, whiskey pork chops and of course the lobster bake! The steak that accompanied the lobster was just as good, if not better. Breakfasts of eggs Benedict, crab Benedict, and homemade cinnamon rolls, biscuits, shortbread, and bagels were amazing. Can't even begin to understand how difficult it must be to cook this level of quality food, for almost 30 people, on an antique wood burning stove. Hoping Jocelyn will publish a cookbook, even if it doesn't have the temperature and cook time info, I'm happy to play around with that on my own. We were blessed with great weather and really enjoyed the scenery, stars, and meteor shower. We saw seals, eagles, lobster boats, and were able to use the paddle board and rowboat. The water was cold but refreshing. My husband really enjoyed being able to help out with raising the anchor and sails, and we learned so much on our voyage. Between the crew and the guests, we met so many wonderful people from various backgrounds/demographics, and enjoyed all of our conversations. In regards to the other reviews about the cabins, bathrooms, dishes, I'm guessing those folks didn't read or research before signing up, keep in mind that this is an almost 100 year old schooner, and for the most part you're going to feel like you've stepped back in time, which is kind of the whole point. For us, it was nice to be able to disconnect from technology and all the modern-day conveniences that were so used to. Bring a book, game, journal, or craft to occupy your time. It was nice to not have to dry and style my hair or to worry about makeup. The cabins are small but we slept incredibly well. Bring earplugs if you're a light sleeper, my husband used breathe-right strips to help with snoring. We used extra large body wipes in lieu of the shower, and hats are a must. We brought bar soap -it was great to use in the sink in our cabin to wash hands, since hand sanitizer only goes so far, especially when you're applying sunscreen. They now have flush toilets that work really well, and we never had to wait in line to use them. As for the dishes, our travel companions did a good job of wiping everything off with their napkins first, and we had no issues with the warm soapy water. We had a great time and hope to be able to go again soon!

The owner of this small travel company goes on every trip. She's been doing this work for 25 years and seems to know everyone; the local guides, the restaurant owners, the drivers, and excursion operators. It is evident that she cares deeply about everyone having a positive experience. And she takes care of all the details. Even though we stayed busy with visiting ancient ruins, museums, shopping, dining, and touring small hill towns, I found the experience to be relaxing because I knew all the details were taken care of.

When I pay less than $150 for a room, I don't expect the Ritz. Here, you get what you pay for. We had arrived late (check in ends at 8 pm) so the door was left open for us (fine) for a $20 late fee (really???), so there was no way to get sheets for the sofa bed. I was exhausted and angry, and my son slept poorly on a lumpy sofa bed with no sheets. Fortunately, the next day, the young man in charge was very kind and removed the $20 "late check in fee", reduced the price of our stay and got us our sheets. My rating of this place went from 1 to 3 stars based on responsiveness. Bottom line: dates decor, stained carpeting, fridge that doesn't work. Clean sheets, some friendly people, and a cheap place to stay the night. Not perfect, but what do you want for cheap?

I booked through an online hotel website ... on our way up we hit traffic so naturally called the office... called 56 times! NO ONE ANSWERED ... so I phoned the website booking customer service number... they also couldn't get anyone to answer even on the private alternate number they had on file. So they cancelled the booking and helped with finding another pet-friendly hotel in the area for the same night. Thankful because the next morning we drove past the Baits Motel and it looked like no one was running the place. There was what looked like a young guy sitting on the porch with the place seeming quite ironically the "Bates Motel". If you see this place listed for pet-friendly motels along Route 1 in Maine... don't book through online hotel websites... cause the online websites need to take it down.

This is an excellent museum which highlights Bath's proud history of shipbuilding in Maine…read more Although the admission fee is high ($20 or $22), it helps to support the volunteers and activities of the museum. We only had 2 hours available, so we focused largely on the exhibits. The museum includes various buildings which highlight different aspect of shipbuilding from caulking, blacksmithing, and building skiffs (modern day boats used to travel on Maine's coastal waterways). We loved the exhibit on lobstering in Maine - with superb displays that showed why Maine's lobsters are prized worldwide (they have the best claw meat), and a colorful display of buoys and traps. Talking with volunteers about the art of woodcarving and building skiffs was very interesting. It was cool to see the flagpoles (representing the Wyoming schooner) and Bath Iron Works in the distance (a current shipyard for the U.S. Navy). Since we only had 2 hours available from 10am-12pm, we could not join the afternoon lighthouse cruises (which looked like fun). Overall, we enjoyed our visit to the Maine Maritime Museum! You'll learn a lot about Bath's proud history of shipbuilding and the tradition of lobstering in Maine.

I have whiled away more than one afternoon, watching the beautiful Kennebec River and all the wildlife from the grassy shore. The tent & cabin were both very clean & comfortable. The campground community bath house (when staying in a tent or cabin w/out bathroom) was also kept clean. The cabins could use a bit more privacy - all the huge, gorgeous, picturesque windows are problematic as (particularly in the winter) there's several other cabins w/full view into your windows. It would be nice if it was more of a private / woods view than looking into other cabins. That said, my daughter & I enjoyed our time and have been repeat customers. Would give it 4.5 stars (Yelp doesn't give half star option, but I needed to account for the lack of privacy in several of the cabins in the area we were in.). Overall a great option & we'll likely be back!

What to do in Freeport? VISIT THE DESERT!…read more This has been on my list for years and it did not disappoint. I kinda found it odd to pay $21 to explore the dunes but here's what we got for the price: - unlimited train rides - Ability to wander the desert - Executed their scavenger hunt - the kids rode a massive slide (unlimited) - we explored a fair/troll maze - dug for fossils - visited an old gas station - walked through an old home - unique playground This place isn't just the desert (and I don't mean the mini golf.) It's a little hidden wonder that offer families things to do. My kids (4 and 13) were fully immersed in the experience. The oldest was keeping the youngest involved in the scavenger hunt which he loved looking for the 'red' guy. The hands on portions fully captivated them. I was worried the walking might be a lot for the little guy but he didn't complain not once. It was explorative and interesting. Keep in mind, on hot days I bet you feel it! Bring sunblock, wear hats, closed toed shoes are best and water. Also, the big blue slide in the rear of the desert shoots little ones out like a cannon! I thought he broke his arm but he was ok! You've been warned.

As predicted, it turned out to be a Beautiful and calm night. We ended up watching the fireworks from shore. They contract out their crews so it may have been that something fell apart on that side for the night trip. Just be prepared that they may cancel for any reason. A local captain we met during the fireworks show in Camden surmised that there was likely something else besides the weather in their decision. Others in our party were committed to getting in a harbor tour so we ended up getting a day sail earlier in the day. It was a Beautiful day. Competent and friendly captain and crew. They did an excellent job of hosting the harbor tour. Absolutely Beautiful boat. Great way to spend some time on the water. Be prepared for alternative plans.

Deep Boat Hard to…read morepass up a boat ride to see some adorable puffins while visiting Maine, so we decided to give Hardy Boat Cruises a go on their "Puffin Watch" tour. The Good: *About a twenty minute drive from gorgeous Pemaquid Point Lighthouse. *Staff was friendly *You're not stuck in your seat for the entire journey as you're free to move about once the boat gets going. *About as close as one can get to the puffins without going on the island they hangout. *Overall, it was a really fun boat ride and you get to see some neat stuff. The Meh: *It's not cheap at $51/adults (13+) and Kids (2-12) *They have a representative from National Audibon on the boat which is awesome--but you can't hear a weird she says thru their archaic "sound" system. Between the waves and engine noise, she could've been reading the dictionary for all we know. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ The Meh: *Their "off-site" parking lot is definitely just that--off-site! It's a good 10min walk from the parking to the pier, but that's not even the worst of it. You have to walk on a two-lane road with almost no shoulder and lots of curves, so definitely be aware of your surroundings. Or it'll coy-tains for you, see? Coy-tains! *And--as if the above wasn't bad enough--they have the gall to charge you $20 for the pleasure of parking there. -_- Conclusion: Fun ocean adventure to see the puffins--but be prepared to crack open your wallet for this pleasure.
