All Star Martial Arts deserves 10 stars. My kids (ages 5 and 7) have been students for about a year now, and I couldn't be happier with the results. I've watched them not only grow in physical strength, balance, and athleticism, but also in confidence and respect for themselves and others. He brings knowledge, patience, and humor to his martial arts training, and the classes are equal parts fun and educational. I have no question that Master Ryan is a good martial artist or that he can teach adults. But our experience with our 6 year old was not great. We had a demo class along other kids and the teacher started having them kick a punching pad with their feet. That's of course the whole point, but he didn't demonstrate the technique to kick before, especially that one's has to kick with the ball of the feet, to avoid injury. As a result a bunch of kids started kicking with their toes. My kid hit so hard, (twice as the teacher asked her to continue kicking) that she had to come out for a moment. One parent even had to shout to the kids: "don't hit with your toes!" With small kids, Ryan should demonstrate the technique and have the kids first practice the kick slowly (and then hard) to make sure they don't injure themselves. read more

Master Ryan is a true master at his craft. My 4 year old son has had a hard time opening up and gaining self confidence and in only 4 classes he is laughing and making karate yells which is so amazing for a mom to hear and see. I haven't seen a coach or teacher yet with such patience and genuine care for a child as Master Ryan. He has the ability to reach any child/person at any age or ability or personality type. We are very luck to have found Master Ryan's karate studio in Oak Park. My 5 year old son Ryan came for a trial and we immediately knew this was the right place. The studio is clean and classes are organized. He has two other black belts tending to the class. Master Ryan offers personal attention to each student and amazingly tracks each of their progresses at each class. (Not sure how he does it as he has so many students) He genuinely cares and teaches with compassion. He has a great sense of humor also! I have been search for the right martial arts master for my child for the last few years. My son has had some trouble finding his inner assertiveness and sometimes has a hard time connecting with others socially. Ryan was very proactive about answering my questions- gave me his cell number and talked to me at length about my child's challenges and came up with a "personalized" plan to build up his confidence. We have only been to 7 classes and I'm astounded at my son's progress! Ryan has given him unique opportunities to shine and makes sure to give each child in each class individualized attention- no matter how large the class is. I was particularly impressed at our last class when another boy was being hyperactive and disrespectful towards others. Ryan disciplined this child with a calm discussion about respect and offered negative vs positive consequences that the child could choose. Thankfully this child chose correctly. Ryan is teaching these kids respect and integrity and I think he's an asset to have in our community. There are many reasons to join All Star Martial Arts. The dojo is state-of-the-art. The prices are beyond fantastic. Most of all, however, you should focus on the values of your studio. These values start with the amazing Master Potter. I have had the fortune of being his pupil for 14 years. Throughout this time, I have gone from Yerba Buena Elementary to UC Berkeley, and despite this, I never met a better teacher than Ryan Gyro. The best testament to this claim remains me because I was not what you would call an easy student. Over our time together, I have experienced phases of being painfully shy to obnoxiously boisterous. Despite this, Ryan never taught me with anything less than the utmost respect. It is with this upmost Respect that he taught me more than how to be a Third Degree Black Belt but instilled core values in me. From the beginning, he preached and displayed the importance of respect, integrity, confidence, family, and community. These values continue to be his studio's cornerstone (THEY ARE LITERALLY WITTEN IN GIANT LETTERS ON HIS WALL!).
