From the very beginning, Lauren made me feel safe, supported, and completely cared for. She has such a calming presence, and she gave me the confidence I didn't even know I had. Lauren was with us every step of the way--starting months before I delivered--helping us prepare for labor and delivery with thoughtful education, helpful advice, and so much reassurance. When it came time for labor, she advocated for me in ways I will forever be grateful for. Her expertise not only helped move my labor along more efficiently, but she also helped me manage the discomfort in ways that made such a difference. Both my husband and I felt so thankful she was by our side. Having our first baby felt a lot less overwhelming because Lauren was there guiding and supporting us through it all. She even came to visit after our son was born, which meant so much to us. I genuinely cannot imagine having another baby without her. If you're considering hiring Lauren--do it. I cannot recommend her more highly. She is an incredible doula and an even more incredible person.

When our plans shifted suddenly and we felt backed into a corner about what to do next, Merrie helped us calmly and thoughtfully navigate all of our choices so we could choose the path that felt right for us. Merrie's experience truly shows it felt like she had seen it all before and could clearly explain what might happen and what options we would have in each scenario. Her calm, grounding presence made her such a comforting person to have in the birthing room, and I always felt complete trust in her guidance and support. No matter what direction we chose, she was fully there for us. Her support didn't stop at birth. She continued to help us postpartum, offering guidance on babywearing, breastfeeding, and adjusting to life with a newborn. We felt so supported every step of the way. Ambrosia was my doula for my daughters birth in 2022. And I don't know what I did right in my life…read moreto deserve her but my goodness is she an angel. Ambrosia was a relatively new friend before she became my doula, but as soon as I found out I was pregnant I felt comfortable enough calling her and asking her to meet me and explain what to do next. At the time I had no idea what a doula was, the difference between doctors and midwives, even just what the first steps after finding out you're pregnant are. All I knew was that she was involved in the birth space and that she made me feel comfortable enough to call her and ask her all this stuff. She was so sweet from the beginning, and made me feel truly supported no matter what I decided throughout the whole pregnancy. She even encouraged me to interview other doulas so I felt secure in my decision to hire her. She took time to answer any questions I had throughout the pregnancy, and spent time with my husband educating us on what would happen during labor and birth. She always had a chill, relaxed attitude which saved me because I was stressed about knowing everything and making every single decision. She made me feel like everything was okay at all times. She gave me a lot of peace. I can't express how supported she made me feel in my choices. I was interested in a fully natural, unmedicated birth (that terrified my husband and mom and mother-in-law, everyone really). But she encouraged me to listen to my heart, to really listen to what I wanted, and made me feel like I could do it if I wanted to. And that was hard because I am such a people pleaser. Long story short, I was supposed to get induced (which scared me so much, but again-- she let me know I didn't HAVE to do anything if I didn't want to and if I chose to get induced, I could own that as my choice). I went to the hospital to start the induction and didn't end up needing to because my labor started spontaneously (so that was a little miracle). She was in constant contact with me, checking in on how I was doing, if I was eating/drinking/moving/resting. And then she showed up at the hospital and I swear the energy in the room shifted. She had a lot of experience in the hospital I was giving birth and she walked around like she knew where everything was. She moved me into positions that helped give me comfort that I would have never thought to do on my own. She pulled out a stool for me to sit on from the hospital closet that even the nurses didn't know was there. She helped my husband know exactly what to do (ie "now is a good time to go hold her" versus "maybe let's take a step back and let her be"). I swear she helped preserve our marriage that day because I left thinking my husband was perfectly what I needed during that entire experience. Ambrosia knew my birth preferences and as soon as someone asked something that didn't fit them-- she would look at me to say what I needed-- often a "NO" or "okay" and then she would fully back me up on that. The biggest thing that stands out to me was i felt my body start pushing, I was on my hands and knees on the floor and the nurse wanted to check my dilation and she wanted me to lay down. At that point in my labor I would rather die than lay down. So ambrosia kind of negotiated with the nurse who ended up checking my on my hands and knees on the bed. (SURPRISE I was fully dilated with baby's bead right there and the doctor was at least 15 mins away). Even when everyone started panicking and running around trying to get ready for baby to arrive, she was near my calming me saying it was all going to be okay, that there is an on-call doctor, that everything is happening as it should. Everything happened so fast and the baby arrived quickly. When I was pushing baby out was the only time I got a little scared, and again, Ambrosia was there talking me through it, calming me down, coaching my husband (AND taking videos and pictures). It was such a relief that I had as able to deliver how I wanted -- unmedicated, on my hands and knees (even though the hospital staff did not love that), and all in 6 hours). I could go on and on and on about how incredible Ambrosia was, but then this would be a novel. If you're thinking about hiring her, DO IT. I recommend her to everyone I know. I am going to fly her out to me to be my midwife if I have another baby. She is an angel and she has the most incredible energy and she is so knowledgeable. She gave me such confidence in myself by simply telling me to look within. I love her and I will have such wonderful memories of my first birth largely because of her. Thank you thank you Ambrosia for doing your work and being so good at it. Love you!!

I hired them mostly for support during birth, but I ended up having a quick labor and a very challenging postpartum period. They were there for all of it in every way I needed them. Each woman brings a different set of skills to the table, but they all offer exceptional prenatal/labor/postpartum support. If you're considering hiring a doula for your birth, do yourself a favor and allow these women to help make it a beautiful experience.

Since you are reading this, I assume you have decided that a doula is a good idea for your birth…read more But if you are unsure, let me help you - the answer is YES. Especially if this is your first baby, after going through it, doing it without a doula is simply unimaginable. More on why below. Boulder and environs are not short on doulas as we learned when we moved here two months ago, seven months pregnant). Boulder Doula's Circle was recommended to us by a friend, but we were hesitant at first - like many health providers, on the "big day" you do not know which of the three doulas you might end up with. What if we had a favorite or were not crazy about one of them? This is intimate family stuff after all. However, after a 1:1 meeting and attending one of their monthly birth circle open houses at the Mamahood, we knew it was not just a case of being the "right fit" for us, but so much more. Suddenly we felt incredibly supported by these three very wise, very experienced, and very fun women. Each brings a unique set of skills to the table that will benefit you, not just on the big day, but throughout your pregnancy. Whether it was herbs, exercises, guiding us to other resources in the community, pre-natal home visits, or post-partum visits, Amanda, Rachel and April gave way more than we ever imagined. We were clueless, but by the time labor arrived we were super-educated, prepared, and confident. And the benefits of their support during labor cannot be overstated. Its difficult to express how grateful we are to these three. Another aspect of the team-doula approach: you can't end up in a situation where your one doula is on vacation or at another birth, leaving you in the lurch. Or, if, heaven-forbid, you have a marathon labor, you can get a hand-off, where one of them will come in as relief. A final thing to add - while we were on board with their approach, we saw other couples who had different ideas of what they wanted (or didn't want) and all three of the doulas were really non-judgmental and supportive. I suppose that in this world thats normal, but there was something genuine about it - its not that they were hiding what they really thought, but that they were truly not judging and wanted to do whats best for their pregnant mamas and their babies. In this incredible, exciting, daunting process of starting a family, I cannot stress how great it was to have these three as counsel. If this sounds too good to be true, message me and Ill be happy to share more details of our experience. Nikko

We had spoken to one early on, but she was booked by the time we tried to hire her. Luckily for us, she recommended the services of Jordan Allen at Bella Vita Doula. My wife and I were able to take a number of parenting classes through our hospital, but it was all very broad. It was absolutely invaluable having Jordan there to fill in the blanks we had from class, as well as providing a fuller, more comprehensive overview of the basic facts learned in our hospital classes. While our classes provided information about "most babies", Jordan's instruction felt more like we were talking about "our baby". Much of the information we got from other sources -- classes and our OB -- felt very medical, very textbook, and very impersonal. Jordan provided research based, data driven information, which empowered my wife and I to believe in ourselves, not just as individual parents, but as a team, soon to be in charge of a little life. Speaking in my own experience, being a soon-to-be-father can often feel very alienating. Most folks -- family, friends, medical staff -- are rightly preoccupied with the health of Mama and baby, and the journey they're undergoing together. Lots of jokes about "you just helped with the fun part" can make it easy to feel like the non-birthing parent doesn't have a place in this journey, or in labor and delivery. From our first interaction, Jordan made me feel the opposite; that I was in fact one of the most important parts of "the care team", as she put it. I don't think it's an understatement to say that Jordan was one of the bigger parts of my support system during the pregnancy journey. We also had the privilege to have Jordan for two postpartum visits, in which she provided lots of tips and tricks for new parents, and most valuably, how to find further support if needed, be it lactation consultants, parenting resources, and further explanations on the sterilized information we gained from class. Jordan's pricing was very reasonable (I would say she should charge more) and was always available for my wife and I, be it for small questions, or broader conversations about something we had heard from one source or another. By far, the most valuable service Jordan provided was her unflagging certainty in my wife and I that we can do this. Due in no small part to her, we have. You could do no better than Jordan Allen.

Service: Labor and Birth Doula Context: Father, 2nd Child,…read more1st at-home birth Despite our preparations, our first birth taught us that we can always know, prepare, and expect more. We met Julie in our doula interviews early in our preparations, and with our first home-birth, we knew we needed someone with the knowledge to build our trust, the confidence to direct when needed, and the serenity to alleviate our anxieties. Julie brought every one of those to the table, and more! During our first birth, I couldn't help but feel like a third-wheel, understanding key parts of the birth, but serving mostly as an observer, with the occasional comforting words. In preparation for our 2nd, Julie offered both live Q&As, and preparatory, informative, and engaging classes, which helped prepare not only my wife, but myself in both what to expect and how to engage with each part of the birth. Rather than only observing, or waiting for direction, I became an active participant, predicting and understanding my wife's needs, while also being able to adapt as needed. As labor's frequently do, ours started late in the night, and with a quick call, Julie assessed the situation and determined to come over to help, even in the early stages. As a doula, she helped guide us into active labor, recognizing when we hit hurdles, and confidently and calmly discussed alternative positions and practices. Serving not only as doula, she frequently provided updates that would help our midwife determine how far along we were, and stayed by Laura's side through delivery! In the interest of time, I'll end with an appreciation of Julie's ability to frequently bridge the gap when all the participants became a little too single-minded; Julie would swoop in, suggesting breaks, and even cooking up some delicious meals! Even afterwards, Julie visited and brought a smorgasbord of home-cooked foods, taking the weight off of running a household, and letting my wife, my children, and myself, take time to simply be with each other. Thank you so much, Julie, for not only being what my wife needed, but helping me to be the same! P.S. For the Mother's perspective, Laura's review should post soon!
