Underground tours in Naples are very popular with multiple sites and entry points, this one being the main location. Entrance is via an alley along Via dei Tribunali, one of the main stretches in the historic center, and on a Sunday noon it was packed with visitors waiting for their tour times. Like probably 70-80 people waiting in a 12 x 20 foot area...a fair number of staff on hand wrangling the lines, telling people/groups with pre-bookings to line up in front of those without. Each person basically has to talk to a staff member to figure out exactly who they should be standing behind. Then there are staff members calling out times for each tour at the front, Italian then English alternately. I'm not sure why they don't implement an easier, more straightforward system, for each language--one line for prebooked and one line without. Tickets can be booked in advance online by tour language and they ask you to be there 15 minutes prior to your time slot. This is most certainly not only recommended, but required if you want to avoid inadvertently missing your timeslot due to the confusing line as mentioned above. Also their website refers to the online tickets as "skip-the-line" though to be clear you are essentially just booking a spot in advance, you still need to wait in line at the entrance. And hands down book in advance. They "guarantee" entry at the door (as I heard a few different staff members mention to certain people in line), however what they don't initially mention is this is only after all pre-booked visitors enter, so this could mean an indefinite wait of 30 minutes, an hour, 1.5 hours...who knows. For safety reasons entry is only possible via guided tour, and there are limits to the size of each group. They definitely push it though, considering my group of about 35ish was one of several groups to go down in staggered times of about 15-20 minutes apart. Once the guide directs the group to enter the pathway leading underground, they make you line up along the stairs while another group exits, then your group can enter. It's several flights down (then back up) so I saw some elderly with walking handicaps and families with strollers struggling. Honestly I wouldn't recommend coming here if you fall into either group. I imagine it could be dangerous for the former (think slippery stone in some areas) and there was a toddler crying during two-thirds of my tour that made for a very distracting experience if you consider the cavernous reverberations. After waiting in line for about 15-20 minutes outside, then another 10-15 minutes on the stairs inside, the tour itself lasted about an hour and fifteen minutes after we finally got downstairs. It was very informative and our guide tried her best to crack jokes and maintain a light-hearted atmosphere while at the same time projecting her voice as loud as possible and telling other nearby groups to keep their voices down (yes, bc there were a few different groups in close proximity sometimes so she had to practically yell to be heard). She shared about the history, functions (aquifer, munitions storage, landfill, war bunker, etc) and unique conditions (cool temps and high humidity) that makes this subterranean complex such an integral part of Naples' story. The last 20 minutes was dedicated to visiting the ruins of an ancient Roman amphitheater only a few minutes walking from the Sotterranea entrance/exit. It's in a separate building altogether on a residential street and it was intriguing to see the intersection of antiquity and modern life. Tickets are €18 for adults, €15 for students 11-24 yrs old, €10 for children 5-10 yrs old. Time slots available on the hour from between 10am to 7pm daily, last entry at 6pm. The staff working here is terrible though, unfortunately you can only go through with their tours. The woman organize the lines and sells the tickets is absolutely the worst. She yells at people and gave misleading information, while said only 15 people in the tour group when selling the tickets, but it ended up filling near 35 people in the same group once you get into the line for your time stamped tickets, and you can imagine how crowded it could be. This tour is not recommended for claustrophobic people.

It's a convenient 7-8 minute walk from the main train station, an easy transfer for travelers arriving via train from other cities. There's space for approximately 450 boats to dock, many of what I passed were smaller private boats ranging from dinghies to small yachts. There's a parking lot directly along the waterfront which looked like it had around 150 parking spots, and also many dining options within a 5 minute walking distance. There's only one cafe located directly on the marina, though rest assured they carry Italy's iconic happy hour drink - the Aperol spritz - so patrons waiting for the ferry can grab a drink while enjoying a pleasant view of the Tyrrhenian Sea, Salerno city skyline and Monti Lattari (Lattari Mountains) in the background. Ferries arrive pretty regularly per hour during the day in peak season though off-peak schedules vary so make sure to check times in advance. Over centuries as their power waned, the sites became fishing hamlets and subsequently now tourism destinations due to the scenic beauty of their natural landscapes. These mostly quaint municipalities are: Amalfi, Atrani, Cetara, Conca de' Marini, Furore, Maiori, Minori, Positano, Praiano, Ravello, Scala, Tramonti, and Vietri sul Mare. Many are located along the water, others like Ravello, Tramonti, and Furore, are perched on the slopes of the Lattari Mountains, and to reach them you need to take public or private transport up the winding and narrow cliffside roads. Personally, my recommendation is to pass on driving yourself, unless you like tackling these types of harrowing driving terrains. Parking is not easy to find and many town centers are pedestrian only so you have to get out and walk anyways. For the coastside towns, travel by ferry is a more convenient and lovely way to see the waterfronts and mountains. The unique topography of the cliffside towns led to cultivation of lemons, citrus and vineyards, which have become synonymous with the region, and during the warmer months you will see citrus and especially lemons everywhere! EVERYWHERE. Walking down the street in Sorrento, after a whiff of motorcycle engine exhaust, the breeze carries a lemon scent when you walk close to one of what feels like hundreds of lemon orchards - in public parks, private gardens and sometimes just randomly along the street. Shops carry fresh lemons the size of grapefruits and I even saw one the size of my head (no exaggeration, see pic!) and every type of lemon souvenir you could imagine under the sun, edible and non-edible. Of course local cuisine incorporates lemons into their dishes too! Amazing food can be enjoyed at many restaurants here, though I've mentioned in separate reviews, these will be pricier than your average Italian city/town. You certainly pay for the views and there's a never-ending slew of spots to catch a breathtaking panorama. And speaking of a panoramic views, if you're into hiking, Il Sentiero degli Dei (the Path of the Gods) is a moderate trail that winds around the higher vantage points connecting Agerola to Positano, with...you guessed it...stellar viewpoints along the way. The ferries to/from the east (Salerno) and west (Sorrento/Positano) stop here. Tickets can be procured online or at little stands in a covered area at the start of the pier, and schedules are posted as well. Each operator has its own stand, with public and private charter or tour options available. While there are signs for different destinations listed at the end of the pier, in practice everyone is herded into the same line. Crew will announce destinations closer to the time of departure, note: - there's no shade, so take sun or rain protection into account on days with high heat or inclement weather. - keep an open ear to the destinations being called out, because the ferries don't always run on schedule, with minimal explanation on status and wait time. Expect some confusion. Other than these logistical considerations, this dock is only a few minutes walking from the pedestrian pathway that winds up the center of Amalfi, an easy location to kick off exploring the town.

Tickets can be booked online in advance on their website (I added that to this listing!), payable by credit card. Or in person via cash or card at a ticket office, this one being located on the extended jetty/wharf of the Porto Turistico right before you line up for embarkation. Prices depend on distance (departure/arrival ports) and from what I could tell are fixed pricing. From Salerno to Amalfi was €12 one way, and took about 35 minutes. From Amalfi to Positano €10 one way and 25 minutes. Open seating, no assigned spots. From scouring Reddit, it appears the ferry seats generally don't sell out, though during peak seasons better to arrive earlier if there's an inclement weather forecast later in the day, since sometimes certain departure times can be canceled. When that happens if there is enough demand, they might add a secondary boat for the next departure time if available. The ferry fleet aren't all the same, however generally will have two levels, lower level being inside and upper level with open air views of the surroundings. Sitting on top was windy in April though fine with a light jacket. Expect a little spray and some turbulence depending on the water conditions for the day. Some ferry boats have a snack stand, and on this ferry the crew also sold water, candy, chips/cookies, soft drinks and alcohol (Aperol spritzes available here too!) mostly beer and a few simple cocktails, by bringing options around to seated passengers. No pressure to buy. In general crew seemed jovial amongst themselves. One thing they could definitely improve upon--though it seems like there's no incentive for them to make better--is the organization of the lines for the ferry especially at busier times. Salerno was ok since it's the first stop, however at the towns in the middle it's chaotic. No signs, you have to ask around to make sure you're in the right spot; they line up multiple ferry routes in the same line, then just call out the next destination, sometimes they're on time, sometimes late. Sooo many confused travelers. No mater which towns you're traversing between, the views of the coast were spectacular. The smaller seaside villages trailed along the mountains ridges, colorful abodes cascading down the foothills and spilling onto the shore. I couldn't have asked for a more scenic ride!

So be nearby and pay attention to the destinations being yelled out, because the time on your ticket may not match the destination they're calling out at that designated time, in other words they don't always run on schedule. Other than these logistical considerations, this dock is only a few minutes walking from the central streets that wind up the hillside in Positano, making it a convenient starting point to explore the town.

When I say Salerno station was a blur, it was because I ran thru it at top speed. ^_^…read more My train from Naples left 45 minutes late, and my originally ample one hour window to walk leisurely around the city and port district, potentially grabbing something to eat for lunch turned into a mad dash to make sure I caught my connecting ferry to Amalfi. That being said, from my peripheral vision the station looked in decent shape, nothing standout, though fairly clean and functional. There are several train platforms from which you alight from an arriving train, then take stairs or elevator to descend under to a connecting tunnel, from where you follow signs to the exit. If I recall correctly you don't need to scan a ticket to exit. Just have to look for the exit turnstiles (the same as the entry turnstiles though follow the signs that show which ones to use for in versus out). The main exit is at the south face of the station, I paused briefly here to check that I was headed in the correct direction and snapped a couple pics of the front, a stately white-washed building, the nicest train station facade in the city. A taxi stand is right outside of the entrance, parking is available around the traffic circle and in a lot directly in front. Seemed pretty full for a Tuesday afternoon. A war monument stands in the center of the plaza. The walk from the station to the marina where Travel Mar ferry departs--to the towns along the Amalfi Coast--is about 7-8 minutes, then a few more minutes to the end of the pier where you embark. Thankfully I made it with 5 minutes to spare before they started boarding! Around the station are blocks of residential, retail and restaurants, many options if you're looking for a bite to eat.
