We purposely moved here for the schools, Turpin and Sherwood. This summer was full of preparation for our current Sophomore son. You start by doing all of the online registration and then drop off all the important paperwork at the district office (see my review for there, too). A few weeks before school started, we were invited in by the counselor to create a class schedule. The counselor was so kind and thorough, helping explain the in's and outs of the school to us. Fast forward to new parent orientation: the staff gave us a very detailed overview of Turpin and everything it has to offer. A few days later, our son went to the new student orientation where he learned how the schedules work, where to go on the first day and how to succeed at this school. We have been SO pleased with the staff from this school. A week before school started, there was an open house type event where you could tour the school from 8a-8p! It was so nice to be able to freely walk through the school and find lockers/classroom! This is a very busy campus! Lots of active students who have Turpin pride! On the first day of school, the teachers and staff were outside cheering for the students. It is so obvious that the staff at Turpin cares about their kids. I am so, so proud to be a Turpin mom and our family loves this school district so far. The principal went out of his way to give us his personal phone number so we could have one more walk through of the school over the weekend if we wanted it. Now that is someone who cares!!!!

Turpin has been amazing and my daughter finally feels like she has found some people like her. Her classes are wonderful and grades have remained good. She did have a lot of homework freshman year but it has seemed to settle down and be exactly the right amount of homework now. The teachers have always been on top of communication in regards to my daughter having ADD and any help she may require for tests and homework. In the three years here we have never had a bad teacher. The principal is amazing along with all the vice principals, they are top of any issues I may have in regards to testing or SAT or ACT questions or any other basic question. Well, first off, I'll…read moreadmit to being slightly negatively biased against the school because I was forced (thanks, mom and dad!) into attending the private, single-sex Catholic high-school after spending eight lovely years in the Lakota Public School system. There are just a few points I'd like to make about the school, faculty, and my own personal experiences as a "Cougar". First, MND is an all-girls school. For those not in the Cincy mindset, this is not at all rare. In fact, all but a few (two? three?) of the city's Catholic high-schools are single-sex, either male or female entirely. Supposedly many studies have shown that teaching high-school in a single-sex environment eliminates romantic distractions and stresses academic success instead of social success or popularity. I can't speak to the experience of all students, but personally, I found the female dominated environment at Mount Notre Dame to be both catty (what do you expect in a school full of emotionally unbalanced teenage girls?) and not at all conducive to my development as a normal, well-adjusted teenager. Honestly, girls are going to have to socialize with men for the rest of their lives...why not show them how in high-school instead of eliminating the boys entirely? Gender issue aside, the school building is mostly rundown...in a way that the administration would like you to believe is historically accurate and charming. I thought it was decrepit and full of asbestos (and it fact, it was, a major construction project went into place to eliminate the mold during my senior year). The one exception to this is the gymnasium, which was renovated the year before I started at the school. The cafeteria menu, at least as it stood when I graduated in 2005, was in need of a serious over-haul...I brown-bagged everyday for four years, it just looked that unappetizing and overly caloric. I know that cafeteria food doesn't speak volumes about education, but c'mon, look at my other reviews. I'm all about the food, baby. Faculty: basically awful with a (very) few outstanding exceptions. I got a lot of laughs from comparing my high school teacher's curriculums and credits to those of the teachers at the local public school. In my freshmen year "Honors English" class I was instructed to read Out of the Dust, a novel I had read in the fourth grade. I don't want to criticize the whole English department, though, as two of my favorite and most academically decorated high-school instructors (Mr. Tom Geier and Mrs. Julie Haggerty) call this department home. At MND the general rule is that there is one great teacher in each department, so if you send your daughter there, be sure to request them. History: Magnus, Foreign Language: Ortega, Religion: Grote, Science: Peppercorn. MND offers very few AP classes; I had little opportunity to earn college credits. One more note about MND-as with any other Catholic high-school, this place is after your wallet. The tuition is not as high as some comparable schools (UA) but those in charge of soliciting donations from fundraisers and alumni parties get an A + for their ability to guilt. Moral of the story: Save your money, go public. More AP's, better teachers (due to the drastic pay difference), and a better environment for kids to grow socially.

As an alumna of MND, I certainly come with a distinct perspective on the school. Of all the schools…read morein Cincinnati, and certainly of the private, all-girls school, I strongly believe that MND makes its mark as the most welcoming, open-armed school in the city. With diverse academic options, ranging from college prep to AP courses (and some offering college credit - I left MND with six college credits), every girl can personalize an academic career that is challenging and enjoyable. MND also has a great reputation as a sports powerhouse, but it doesn't limit its scope of extra-curriculars to athletics only. There is a very robust theater program, Model UN, academic teams, language clubs, volunteer groups, art classes...the list goes on. I can't speak highly enough of my educators at MND, and I made lifelong friends within the walls of the school. I would gladly recommend this high school to a young woman looking for a personalized education with room to grow and expand her education, interests and friendships.

Not a good school for diverse groups. I was in the Social Work program and my work was failed twice…read moreby my teacher. Her idea of political change was to write letters to government officials and I was always giving different and new ideas for social work. I literally couldn't do anything about being failed twice because my teacher was also my academic counselor. As a Social Work teacher her openness was very stunted and she did not appreciate diverse perspectives. She always was very unclear. The assignment that failed me TWICE she just gave me a zero, because it was "magical thinking". It was 10 pages long and I told her I narrowed it down from the 20 pages I had. The 10 pages was "not enough" while the 20 pages were "too much". If I could rate a zero I would.

While the school preaches "nature" and individuality, they derided my child for his love of nature, and criticized him for talking so much about animals (which was likely because one of the classrooms has a dog in it... all day... every day). A little distracting for a 5-year-old. The team exhibited poor communication and outright rude behavior. For example, my husband was told he could walk our son in to the lobby, rather than participating in carline. But on the second day, after they were already inside, they were asked to "try out a new skill" and go back out and participate in carline. They said a teacher would walk him to his new class, but instead he had to approach someone for directions once he was back inside the building. When we shared this experience with our son's current Montessori teacher, she said their behavior amounted to "testing" students (and families) and "cherry picking," which, in her words, "is not what Montessori is about."

As a parent, I know how important education is to my children and, like most parents I want the…read morebest that I can provide. As a Children's Meeting House alumni, I know just how fantastic CMH is and how the Montessori teachings have impacted my life, both educationally and socially. The teachers that I've had the pleasure of learning under and allowing to teach my children are some of the best and you are able to see that they teach with such heart and desire to help the children, not just to get a paycheck. There's no right or wrong way for the children to learn and it's on the student's time frame, not the curriculums. If the student does not understand the work or lesson, they keep at it until they do. The student dictates how they learn and how long it takes them to learn, not the other way around.
